Fred and Jeri Thompson: Last Chance For Romance?
Washington Post ^ | 29 June 2007 | Mary Ann Akers

Posted on 06/30/2007 4:59:06 AM PDT by shrinkermd

With an 8-month-old baby boy and a 4-year-old daughter, it might be tricky for Fred and Jeri Thompson -- the as-yet unofficial potential first couple -- to steal some candlelit alone time on this special day, their fifth wedding anniversary.

But that's OK. Because from what we hear, Jeri would be just as happy to spend the day writing her hubby's presidential candidacy announcement speech.

One of the burning questions surrounding the Thompson camp (besides what day Fred will make his run official) is what role his wife will play in the campaign. Jeri Thompson, who at age 40 is 24 years younger than the actor-turned-senator-turned actor, is heavily involved in the day-to-day decision-making of the exploratory effort, according to knowledgeable sources

Don't worry kid. You'll grow up and learn to appreciate women instead of girls.

“She’s running the campaign,” grouses one veteran GOP political operative involved in the Draft Fred movement. “It’s the No. 1 rule of politics: The wife can’t be the campaign manager.”

Playing a role is fine, says the unnamed operative, “but not calling all the day-to-day shots.”

Like Hef and Holly, I guess. Just add a Kendra and Brigit, and he could have his own Girls Next Door show.

I mean, more power to the guy, but he's got the Hugh Hefner / teeny bopper girlfriend vibe going on big time. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that really creeps me out while simultaneously being oddly entertaining.

Yes. They divorced in 1984, after (correction) 25 years marriage. His first wife supports him politically and will campaign for him.

Thompson married his second wife in 2002.

Well, that's not what I was expecting. I may be off base here, but saying that women look younger than they are is a lot safer than saying they look older.

I expecting a little flak for pointing out than a dude who looks like a freshly unwrapped mummy scored with a Playmate looking intern. A lot of words spring to mind when an old guy hooks up with someone 25 years younger than him (and vice versa), but the word "romance" generally doesn't leap to the fore.

(On any other thread in such a conservative website as this, that would be a pretty safe comment)

I’m really looking forward to how people react to the older man/younger woman marriage, especially considering the difference in their ages. Should be fun to watch. They appear to be happy and satisfied with their relationship, something that should push a lot of people over the edge. Yep, should be fun to watch.

Do you often refer to 5-year-running marriages with two children as "scoring?"

Also, when was Jeri an intern?

Because you have not had any psychoanalytic training you do not know why she is wearing the sexy nightgown in public.

If you had read Freud you would know his belief that, "...when it comes to women all men are dumb..." usually explains everything. No doubt, Fred encouraged her behavior with the motive of saying in a way, "...look what I got fellows..." Just shows how a smart man can be so dumb so as to blindly follow his hormonal inclinations.

Actually, Freud never said that and psychoanalysis can add nothing to human vanity and folly that is not already understood in the Old Testament.

I think that the concept of scoring is a pretty commonly understood phenomenon, Petro. It appears you're transposing cause and effect, on the proverbial scoring matrix.

At any rate, I'm not trying to hate on Fred. He's a good guy with good politics. I'm just saying that if he's not who he was, this would be a different discussion we'd be having. The normal social conservative take on such things is a little harsher. We all know it. Why pretend otherwise?

Also, when was Jeri an intern?

Ah, my apologies. She was a *Political media consultant*, not an intern.

They got married in the United Church of Christ church, the same denomination that Obama belongs to. I know because one of my friends from Chicago goes to his church. United Church of Christ is like the extreme left of the Church of Christ. Remember the controversial commercials that the UCC had a few years ago?

I am a member of the Disciples of Christ, its the more moderate of the 3, but they all root from Barton and Stone. My church does a lot of things with the UCC, most members I know from that church are very liberal.

This isn’t a diss to Thompson, I think its cool that his faith has roots in the same as mine, and as far as I know Thompson is a member of the Church of Christ and not the liberal UCC. Reagan was a member of the Disciples of Christ too. Now Obama and his extreme left wing church in Chicago being a part of that, I am not proud of.

I believe a great many people are misreading this "issue", and that the American people would find it a refreshing change to have a First Couple with adorable YOUNG children in the White House. They would consider it a great improvement over the negative media gotcha focus and exposure of the antics of Chelsea Clinton and the Bush Twins.

I believe THAT is the angle, and the potentially big asset to Thompson's candidacy that everyone is missing (or more likely deliberately ignoring).
