Posted on 07/01/2007 6:40:56 AM PDT by george76
Hours after a massive immigration bill collapsed in the Senate, lawmakers and lobbyists began seeking ways to pass bits and pieces of the measure important to their constituents.
In an interview earlier this week, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. _ a backer of the sidetracked immigration bill _ said the one-at-a-time approach may prove impossible, even for tougher border-enforcement measures that now seem popular.
"The only way we're going to get Ag jobs or DREAM Act" or pathways to legal status for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, Graham said, "is to do it together.
This idea of 'Just do the enforcement,' there are no votes for that."

Nah. "No votes for that."
Last year, the Secure Fence Act, which mandated 854 miles of border fencing, passed the US Senate 80-19, passed the US House 283-138, and was signed into law by the president.
There did seem to be some votes for that, no?
“This idea of ‘Just do the enforcement,’ there are no votes for that.”
Then step aside you flamer because there are others that we can elect that will do just that.
Has anyone asked this question?
Once these 12 million become citizens will they be willing to work at below minimum wage and under the table?
Its time Republican voters from South Carolina proved Graham wrong by putting him back on the street and out of the Senate.
Grahm said he had “walked the plank” over this bill.
Start packing boy your toast. All its gonna take to get the votes for a WALL is vote your sorry a$$ out.
The only way we're going to get Ag jobs or DREAM Act or pathways to legal status for the estimated 20-35 million illegal immigrants, is to pass bits and pieces of the measure important to our constituents...
They’ll drag this on and on and on and on and on until they wear down the citizens and the media won’t report on it any longer and nothing will be changed. It’ll all have been a waste of time and effort and tax dollars all at the expense of our children’s future and other matters that should have been addressed. They think they’re being smart and playing a game but they’re tearing down America.
Speaking of “no votes”, Mr. Graham’s prospect for another term seems in doubt.
The only things that need to be passed are funding for the fence, and the bill that makes salary payments to illegal aliens non-deductible.
I’d vote for Charles Manson before I’d vote for Graham again.
At least we were right voting for Jim DeMint.
Have they built any of this approved fence ?
Apparently you missed this statement. Your Senators and Representatives are NOT open to "enforcing the law". When I called one of my former Senator's (McCain) office during this latest debacle with exactly that suggestion his punk intern snidely told me "we don't enforce the law, call the Executive Branch - I will tell the Senator of your concerns."
I must tell you... I wanted to rip the smart-ass little twerp's pharynx out.
lightfoot lindsey had better just get used to rejection. There is a big ole steaming bag full of it coming his way!
Around 80 miles in two years...they need to hire illegals to build it then throw them over it.
They will move up and 12 million more will take their places.
Potlatch has a solution : a moveable fence.
The point was never for them to become citizens. That is why the fines and back taxes were injected for those seeking citizenship. The point was to make them legal but still dirt poor, willing to work for the low wages.
miss lindsay is toast!!!
wait until SC votes him out!!!
he will become a lib/dem!!!
If we keep up the pressure to "build the fence" there will be. Idiot senators are disoriented and confused by the fact that citizens really have begun to pay attention when their vital interests are at stake. A followup grassroots "Secure the Border" campaign is the next step to keep momentum going.
pressure our politicians to enforce the existing immigration laws including deporting illegal aliens, building the fence and prosecuting businesses
That's what they just tried. Disparage and discourage and blow off the People. Very little in the MSM about this bill until internet and talk radio let the sunshine in. And then much to their surprise, the sh*t hit the fan.
Translation: we will not release the hostage until all of the Senate's, the President's and the Chamber of Commerce's demands are met.
The American people have a historically low view of Congress. We seem unable to do the publics business and find consensus on difficult issues.
Great Goober, you understand the problem, but you seem to be unable to come up with a solution!
Just might be a CLUE as to why people are sick of your crap!
Bye Bye Goober
That includes the so-called virtual fence which doesn't work. Actual fence is 15 miles, but most of that is beside an existing fence.
After we replace the scum-bag traitors like you, we will have the votes.
We’ll melt their phone system again.
You cannot become something you already are. Once he's out he will be free to apply for the job he loves. Ted Kennedy's butt boy.
I think Lindsey might have a plank from the virtual fence sticking out of his........
Any photos of it? I’d like to see what they call a fence.
Old Lindsey McCain had better get use to being jumped on, he made his on.
Dream Act hungar strike at Pelosi’s office in San Francisco to begin tomorrow.
I'll venture an answer. Hell No!!!! And if that stupid bill had passed, the millions of spouses, offspring, and so on would join the workforce at full wages and hump for benefits. What a nightmare!
What they forget is that once the illegals become Americans, we will need more illegals to do the work Americans won't do. And then we legalize more illegals and make them Americans, and then we don't have illegals to do the work Americans won't do and then we legalize more immigrants to do work Americans won't do, and then ....
Vicious circle and few seem to get it.
No votes for “Enforcement First”?
Well.... Time to CLEAN HOUSE and SENATE then.
Anyone against that approach should be targeted for defeat.
Are Freepers with me on that?
That is EXACTLY right. Which is why amnesty and guest worker programs are a false solution.
We have to dry up the demand (meaning really going after businesses), then the supply would go away.
I hope he did walk the plank and his constituents view him as shark bait!
“the smart-ass little twerp”
Sounds like one of those interns that post on The Capitolist.
They have their own little culture, those interns and staff assistants to the assistants.
the Capitolist is for interns only .. and they tell one another how they ‘tell off’ people who call about the immigration bill,
and use the F-word all the time, etc. It actually sort of reads like DU.
I am sure the smart-ass little twerp had lunch with his friends and gleefully recounted what he said to you.
They should all be fired.
Graham is stupid for saying this. If they passed Law B to enforce an as-yet-unenforced Law A, why should anyone enforce the new Law B?
Besides, it's up to the Executive branch to enforce laws. The only power the Legislative branch has to enforce laws is to impeach the Executive when said Executive is not enforcing the law.
This short 800 mile fence may take another 20 years ?
“This idea of ‘Just do the enforcement,’ there are no votes for that.”
He will step aside, like it or not. Someone should remind him that enforcement is an executive branch function. He should realize that.
The arrogance of the entrenched political class exposes their disrespect for the separation of powers in the Constitution.
It is also the president who should pay for ignoring his primary duty.
“Last year, the Secure Fence Act, which mandated 854 miles of border fencing, passed the US Senate 80-19, passed the US House 283-138, and was signed into law by the president.”
This is why we cannot stop calling. Everyone, keep calling your representative. Make Congress implement this NOW.
AgJobs and the Dream Act are popular? Only with the Senate!
They try to back door these 2 bills the American people should melt their phone lines again.
Apparently they still didn’t hear us.
