US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

"Make no mistake, this weekend's bomb attacks signal a major escalation in the war being waged on us by Islamic terrorists," John Stevens, the former commissioner of the London police, wrote in an article for the News of the World newspaper.

"Initially it was believed the main problem police faced was insulated groups of home-grown extremists, but now it is clear a loose but deadly network of interlinked operational cells has developed."

"The terror of July 7 (2005) was awful enough, but now al Qaida has imported the tactics of Baghdad and Bali to our streets," he said.

London terror analysis: Online manual on car bombs instructs terrorists ‘not to park illegally’”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The bombing manual, available in Arabic on a jihadi website, contains a number of key pieces of advice for car bombers. It instructs terrorists not to park their vehicles illegally, and advises the car bomber to leave the scene quietly, if he plans to detonate the vehicle from a distance, in what al-Qaeda terms “non-martyrdom operations.”

Fortunately, these guidelines were not adhered to by the two London car bombers, one of whom crashed his vehicle and fled the scene, arousing suspicion, while the other parked his vehicle illegally, resulting in the car being towed away from its intended target.

The manual details precise locations inside the vehicle where explosives should be placed, and recommends various targerts such as “cinemas” and “stadiums.”

Other forms of explosives, the guide says, should be aimed at “groupings demonstrations, celebrations or festivals.”

The guide calls on terrorists to “monitor and identify the route of the enemy, how they leave a cinema or a stadium at the end of a game,” and also gives instructions on how to carry out suicide car bombings.

“Drive the car on the road passing the crowd. If a car passes near these places, it could draw the attention of the enemy, and the car could be inspected,” the guide said. It went on to explain in detail how suicide car bombers can fool security guards, and suggests a correct speed to drive a vehicle packed with explosives into a target.

The placing of such a guide on the internet allows al-Qaeda members around the world to access this experience. In Britain, the target audience is a radical core of jihadis made up of thousands of young British Muslims who have sworn allegiance to al-Qaeda.”

IRAN has formed battalions of suicide bombers to strike at British and American targets if the nation’s nuclear sites are attacked. According to Iranian officials, 40,000 trained suicide bombers are ready for action. The main force, named the Special Unit of Martyr Seekers in the Revolutionary Guards, was first seen last month when members marched in a military parade, dressed in olive-green uniforms with explosive packs around their waists and detonators held high.

Dr Hassan Abbasi, head of the Centre for Doctrinal Strategic Studies in the Revolutionary Guards, said in a speech that 29 western targets had been identified: “We are ready to attack American and British sensitive points if they attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.” He added that some of them were “quite close” to the Iranian border in Iraq.

In a tape recording heard by The Sunday Times, Abbasi warned the would-be martyrs to “pay close attention to wily England” and vowed that “Britain’s demise is on our agenda”.

At a recruiting station in Tehran recently, volunteers for the force had to show their birth certificates, give proof of their address and tick a box stating whether they would prefer to attack American targets in Iraq or Israeli targets.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned last Friday that Israel was heading towards “annihilation”. He was speaking at a Tehran conference on Palestinian rights aimed at promoting Iran as a new Middle Eastern superpower.

According to western intelligence documents leaked to The Sunday Times, the Revolutionary Guards are in charge of a secret nuclear weapons programme designed to evade the scrutiny of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

One of the leaked reports, dating from February this year, confirms that President George W Bush is preparing to strike Iran. “If the problem is not resolved in some way, he intends to act before leaving office because it would be ‘unfair’ to leave the task of destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities to a new president,” the document says.

Alireza Jafarzadeh, a former spokesman for National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an opposition group, said a secret, parallel military programme was under way. According to sources inside Iran, the Revolutionary Guards were constructing underground sites that could be activated if Iran’s known nuclear facilities were destroyed.

The NCRI is the political wing of the Mujaheddin-e-Khalq, which is deemed a terrorist organisation in Britain and America. However, much of its information is considered to be “absolutely credible” by western intelligence sources after Jafarzadeh revealed the existence of the Natanz plant in 2002.

Within the past year, 14 large and several smaller projects have been created, according to Jafarzadeh. Several are designed to be nuclear factories; others are for the storage of weapons, he claimed.

The search is continuing for three terror suspects, believed to want to kill UK troops abroad, who went missing while subject to control orders.

Home Secretary John Reid said they were not a “direct threat” to people in the UK but added they were dangerous.

Lamine Adam, 26, his brother Ibrahim, 20, and Cerie Bullivant, 24, failed to report to police earlier this week.

The Adams’ brother, Anthony Garcia, is serving life for plotting explosions.

Garcia was one of five men jailed last month over a plot to target the UK with a giant fertiliser bomb.

During the trial, the Old Bailey heard that the plot’s ringleader asked Lamine Adam and Garcia to buy the key bomb ingredient because their fairer skin would arouse less suspicion.

Mr Adam knew many of the key conspirators in that case, but was not prosecuted as part of the investigation.

Bullivant had previously appeared at the Old Bailey for breaching his control order.

Listed as “AG”, he appeared at the Old Bailey on 2 and 16 April this year on charges of breaching 13 conditions of his control order.

He was next due to appear on 29 May.

Mr Reid told the House of Commons the security services did not assess the three individuals as presenting a direct threat to people in the UK.

But he added: “They are dangerous and we can take nothing for granted.”

In a written statement released earlier Mr Reid said the orders had been designed to stop the men travelling overseas because it was believed they wanted to leave the country for “terrorism-related purposes”.

He said they had been required to surrender travel documents and report to a police station every day, but had failed to turn up on Tuesday.”

This weekend’s events should be yet another reminder that we should prepare ourselves for further attacks.

Please folks, take the time to THINK about what you would do in the event of an attack. How would you handle a prolonged utility(power, water, gas) outage? What would you eat? Where would you get your water? How would you stay warm? THINK!!!

IMHO, any attack(s) would be localized but could produce regional effects (power grid, etc). If you can stay put, stay put. You are safest at home. If you do have to evacuate, it should not take longer than 15 minutes.

Those with kids or pets need to take them into consideration.

My homepage has a pretty good list of ideas for starters, but there are better resources. USE THEM!

I feel that folks in urban areas are at greatest risk. We folk out here in the country are well armed and have a low tolerance for this sort of thing.

Again, use your brain. THINK about your situation and plan accordingly.

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces detained three suspected secret cell terrorists before dawn on Sunday in North Adamiya near Sadr City. It is believed that the suspected terrorists have close ties to Iranian terror networks.

No shots were fired when Coalition Forces conducted a precision raid to capture or kill terrorists suspected of facilitating the flow of lethal aid into Iraq. Intelligence reports indicate that the suspected terrorists targeted during the raid are associated with key leaders in the secret cell terrorist network and have ties to Iran. It is also believed that the suspected terrorists are responsible for numerous attacks on Iraqi civilians as well as Iraqi and Coalition Forces in Baghdad. The individuals are also suspected of recruiting Iraqis to fill the ranks of Iranian terror groups operating in Iraq.

Coalition Forces detain 14, destroy two bomb caches

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces detained 14 suspected terrorists during Sunday morning operations in Ninewa and Anbar provinces targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders and their operatives.

In Mosul, Coalition Forces captured an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader and three other suspected terrorists during an early morning raid. The alleged senior leader is believed to be responsible for directing rocket attacks.

Coalition Forces raided two buildings in Karmah looking for a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq leader. On scene, the ground forces detained two men who had a stash of grenades and found two weapons caches filled with explosive chemicals and bomb-making materials. A Coalition Forces explosives team safely destroyed the cache on site, and ground forces detained three more suspected terrorists there.

Two more operations in Anbar province netted five suspected terrorists. Coalition Forces searched three buildings west of Tarmiyah looking for an al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader and detained two individuals for their alleged involvement with the cell. Coalition Forces also raided two buildings west of Abu Ghraib targeting a terrorist believed to be involved in vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks against Coalition Forces and detained three suspected terrorists.

“We’re maintaining steady, deliberate momentum of capturing al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders and operatives,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “We will pursue al-Qaeda no matter where they go in Iraq and each capture is a detriment to their ability to operate.”

Maoists attack police posts in eastern India, 9 dead

PATNA, India, July 1 (Reuters) - Maoist rebels killed nine people, including five policemen, in eastern India’s remote Bihar state early on Sunday during an attack on two police stations, officials said.

Some 200 rebels were involved in the pre-dawn raid, stripping dozens of wounded policemen of their weapons after the raid before they fled into the darkness.

Sunday morning’s attack came after a two-day strike against the government’s economic policies that was called by the Maoists earlier this week.

The Maoists operate out of jungle bases across a swathe of 13 Indian states running up the eastern flank of the country, and say they are fighting for the rights of poor peasants and landless labourers.

Homeland Security: The London bomb plot reminds us that terrorists never rest. Like gnats, they keep coming in the hopes we’ll tire of swatting them. They have to get lucky just once. We have to be lucky all the time.

In Piccadilly Circus, only a stroke of good luck prevented an explosion that could have toppled a three-story nightclub and killed hundreds. Authorities had no inkling terrorists planned to blow up cars packed with petro bombs and nails. An ambulance crew tipped off police after noticing vapors building up inside one of them, a Mercedes parked outside a popular nightclub.

Share A secret U.S. law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, warns that al Qaeda is planning a terror “spectacular” this summer, according to a senior official with access to the document.

U.S. officials have kept the information secret, and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said today on ABC News’ “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” that the United States did not have “have any specific credible evidence that there’s an attack focused on the United States at this point.”

As ABCNews.com reported, U.S. law enforcement officials received intelligence reports two weeks ago warning of terror attacks in Glasgow and Prague, the Czech Republic, against “airport infrastructure and aircraft.”

The warnings apparently never reached officials in Scotland, who said this weekend they had received “no advance intelligence” that Glasgow might be a target.

Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff declined to comment specifically on on the report today, but said “everything that we get is shared virtually instantaneously with our counterparts in Britain and vice versa.”

Unlike the United States, officials in Germany have publicly warned that the country could face a major attack this summer, also comparing the situation to the pre-9/11 summer of 2001.

Just another reason to check readiness and preparedness. Sounds like something is in the works.

On the up side, unlike pre-9/11/01, these warnings will not be ignored. Hopefully, any attacks can and will be prevented. Still, anyone who relies on the gov’t for their personal safety is foolhardy.

Sounds like there may still be time to further enhance readiness measures.
