US INPAC - Duncan Hunter (on Hate Crimes)
US India Political Action Committee ^ | 2007 | Staff/Duncan Hunter

Posted on 07/02/2007 11:54:53 AM PDT by pissant

A Profile

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) has been a congressman since 1981, making him one of the longest-serving members of Congress. Like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Hunter, too, is a Vietnam War veteran – he served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade and 75th Ranger Regiment. He was one of the first politicians to enter the 2008 presidential race after he announced his intention to run on October 30, 2006. He announced his formal candidacy on January 25 this year.

Public Service Record

After he returned from the Vietnam War he earned a college degree and opened a legal office in 1976 to give free legal advice to Hispanic immigrants. This was his first brush with public service.

After his election to the House of Representatives, he remained active on various issues including immigration, intelligence reform, government spending, abortion, the war in Iraq and free trade. In 2002, he was appointed chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

Rep. Hunter also introduced the legislation calling for a border fence between the U.S. and Mexico.

Rep. Hunter on Global Competition

“American workers are the most productive and innovative labor force in the world. Unfortunately, they are asked to compete in an unfair environment against other workers who make only a fraction of a living wage and are employed by companies that face few, if any, responsibilities to the environment or the long-term prospects of their employees.

“Our domestic manufacturers are forced to compete against foreign companies that benefit from their country’s currency and regulatory regimes. Ominously, China is cheating on trade and using billions of American trade dollars to build ships, planes and missiles at an alarming rate while, at the same time, taking millions of American jobs. I will reverse this “one-way street” with a new policy of fair trade for the American worker.”

Rep. Hunter on Hate Crimes

“In the past, Congress has considered legislation that would allow the federal government to assist local authorities in the investigation and prosecution of crimes motivated by a person's race, color, national origin, sexual orientation, or religion. Current law allows the federal government to intervene in cases deemed hate crimes only if they occur on federal property, or if the victim was participating in one of six very specific activities, such as voting.

“I have always voted against this type of legislation because I firmly believe that the use of violence against any innocent person is wrong, regardless of that individual's race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. Despite the intentions of these bills, I sincerely doubt that increased federal involvement in these state issues would have any significant effect on these crimes. If crimes are prioritized based on the victims’ status, we threaten the very tenet of equal protection under the law that is the foundation of our legal system.

“Instead, all violations of the law should be dealt with in a manner that delivers justice on behalf of the victims and their families. I support strict punishment for heinous crimes, like murder, regardless of the social circumstances. The idea espoused in so called “hate crime” legislation that some murders are less serious than others rebukes common sense.”

What Indian Americans expect from Duncan Hunter

a) The Indian American community believes that free trade and multi-sector cooperation is at the heart of a prosperous U.S.-India relationship for the 21st century. We urge Rep. Hunter to work closely with the community on building a free trade relationship between the two nations that will benefit both economies and provide a surge in American jobs.

Very reminiscent of his broadside against the recent amnesty bill.

He’s had a few wrong votes in his 26 years. Yet the things he has championed and the his overall record of pro-americanism, pro sovereignty and anti-political correctness is what is needed to lead the country.

I don't like his views on free trade, but I do love his integrity.

That said, his campaign is really going to need to do more work, he needs to generate name ID and facial recognition, something he never did before because, simply put, he wasn't an attention starved media obsessed publicity hound (see Chuck Schumer).

If he works on the basic things, he might be able to start raising more money, and become viable.

I have met Hunter, his wife and son. It was about 8 years ago in San Diego. It was a dinner set up by Roger Hedgecock.

Hunter is one of the most impressive men I have ever met, and would make an excellent President.

I'd prefer a candidate who understands, and will will point out that "hate crimes" aren't the federal government's job, and than semantically tortured claims of "regulating commerce" won't make it so.

Some get behind Fred Thompson like he’s Moses reborn. The fact that he’s an actor doesn’t impress me. A lot of the old actors actually went to war. But Hunter went to war which shows loyalty and grit. He also has clarity of thought and balls. I think he’s been overlooked too long.

Freepers, don’t lose hope and don’t lose your fire. Keep burning up the phone banks, we need to use this momentum not squander it. Let Chertoff, Bush, your Senators and Representatives know you want the fence built, it’s the law. I Posted this on my state board, let them know we want businesses who knowingly hire illegals penalized and we don’t want illegals receiving benefits intended for US citizens. The media is completely ignoring this and I do mean completely. Coverage of the fence would give Hunter a bump and that would not be in the best interests of the Left, the future leaders of Aztlan nor the Wall Street Money Cult. I drifted off course a bit, heh, but yes, I agree with Hunter on the idiocy of Hate Crime Legislation. I drift like that sometimes, sorry. What the hell do you expect from a pyschotic Hunter supporter, cut me some slack!

There was an article posted yesterday talking about a convoy of Chevy Suburbans with blacked-out windows carrying all of Fred’s advisors.

Congressman Hunter made a comment once, he doesn’t need to raise all the money Romney would since he doesn’t NEED advisors and image consultants!

I tell you, Fred does not sound consistant. He is NOT impressing me. Once in, a guy like that could very easily compromise/flip to RINOism. I don’t think I can trust him.

On the other hand, I’ve been crying about China for YEARS to anyone who’d listen. Hunter is looking like my very own dream candidate.

I think he has a chance, as long as folks like Hannity don’t shoot him down - like they did with McClintok during the Davis recall.

Hannity was in Arnolds BVDs for Pete’s sake. Now he’s in Rudy’s Victoria’s Secrets.

Hunter is so far ahead of the curve on China, Illegals, all things military, pro-life, 2nd Amendment, etc etc. It astounds me he is not top tier yet. But its a-coming.

There is a reason Fred was mostly referred to as a moderate in his Senate career.

Hannity was in Arnolds BVDs for Pete’s sake. Now he’s in Rudy’s Victoria’s Secrets.

LOL!!!!!!!

BTW, even though I'm a New Yorker, I followed the CA recall very closely - hence my screen name. :o) Hannity made me sick with his "can't have everything you want" philosophy. Well, McClintok was the real conservative, and Hannity just about made me barf with his spearheading of the self fulfilling prophesy of McClintok's doomed candidacy.

As far as RINO Rudy goes, I heard him repeatedly tell Sean that he was (still) pro partial birth abortion. That conversation went on for years. Sean hoped he could change Rudy's mind, or so he said. I haven't listened to Hannity for quite some time.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, Hannity stabbed McClintok in the back.

Hunter is so far ahead of the curve on China, Illegals, all things military, pro-life, 2nd Amendment, etc etc. It astounds me he is not top tier yet. But its a-coming.

Hope so, because he's cutting edge on everything! I'm thinking that he may be the true heir to Reagan. I feel I'm getting ready to commit. Still reading...I've got to be sure.

There is a reason Fred was mostly referred to as a moderate in his Senate career.

Thanks for this hot tip. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Yes. I reviewed Fred’s entire voting record. Hit and miss, frankly. Some nods to federalism (his calling card, in theory) and some nanny state nonsense as well. Some strong conservative positions and some puppy-dogging behind McCain’s skirt.
