Actually, I don't think stabbing yourself is all that rare as a way of committing suicide.

Ok, then color me uninformed...I've never heard of it before. Slitting your wrists, or disemboweling yourself (ala Japanese), yeah...but stabbing yourself in the neck? Seems a weird way to do it.

As I recall, Manes stabbed himself to death while on the phone with his psychiatrist. His wife was also in the house listening in on another line. Manes was taking kickbacks from various NYC agencies - particularly the Parking Violations Bureau. It was huge mess here in NYC at the time (mid-80's) and contributed to the demise of Ed Koch's administration, which resulted in New Yorkers voting - almost as an act of suicide - for David Dinkins.

I shudder to recall those days.

This guy was a Lt. Col. as I read it and someone familiar with his state of mind is going to have to express lack of surprise for me to buy this incident.

With 25 years in the Fire Department I saw a lot of suicides,and attempted suicides. I have seen men tie a plastic bag around their neck with a necktie, I have seen them hang themselves , I have seen them jump off bridges, I have seen attempts with overdose of aspirin and even birth control pills. I have seen slashed wrists and even a toaster in the bathtub. I never saw Hari Kari although I did see a homosexual after his boyfriend exiscerated him.

I never saw anyone stab themselves in the neck. Not saying it cant happen, just never saw it, just dont believe this story.

We had a DA in the town that I grew up in die in a hunting accident by shooting himself in the back twice with a pump shotgun. Sounds similiar.

If you stab or otherwise sever the carotid arteries, you’re dead in a maybe as little as a minute and a half. Sever the jugular vein, and it could take 15 minutes to die, maybe longer. So I can see really determined people who’ve researched it using such a method to kill themselves.

For “defense attache” read Defense Intelligence Agency employee and then wonder if the official investigation of Cyprus officials is worth a warm bucket of spit.

I’d say stabbing oneself in the neck is among the least likely suicide methods.
