Property values were going up 10%/yr for years. No way an insurance co can insure a property for double without raising rates.

Personally, I'm not holding my breath. This sounds exactly like the kind of loud proclamation your typical scumbag Democrat Governor/President makes just before he says he's, "done everything I could," but is now left with "no alternative but to raise taxes".
I live in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. During the past few years insurance costs have sky rocketed. But outpacing the rate of increase of insurance has been the increases in property taxes. Florida is totally out of control in spending and now it seems it has succeeded in killing the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Many people who did retire here are moving to Georgia, Texas or other warm weather, less-greedy areas. People who had thought about retiring to Florida have evaluated their options and crossed Florida off the list.
This upheaval will reach a new equilibrium in a few years; in the meantime, what Crist is saying is simply face the facts of life.
It all depends on where you live in Florida. I just got my renewal notice for my homeowners yesterday and it was $750 for this upcoming year. My home is values for tax purposes at $245,000. However I do live inland near Gainesville about 50 miles from the nearest coastline. By contrast my sister who lives about a 20 minute walk from the beach pays $4000 for a home only valued at $125K. The main problem here in Florida is that we are basically trapped in our homes unless we want to move out of state because of the property taxes. The system awards long term homeowners and punishes those who move within the state. I would actually like to downsize to something smaller but its actually cheaper to stay in the bigger more expensive home because my property taxes would go way up if I moved.
I think what everyone forgets is FL has NO STATE INCOME TAX ....one of the few states left !!
BUT WHY did the state get rid of the INTANGIBLE TAX on corporations and wealthy individuals ....is what I would like to know ??
That’s the best they can do? A $1 billion “slash” out of $71 billion? How about “slashing” 20 billion and give the people a few billion back?
I guess we should just be happy spending isn’t increasing...sigh.
The local County Government is a huge waste of money. They have tons of crazy rules and bureaucracy that costs millions and millions. They pay people a fortune with full benefits to cut grass.
Jeb signed that bill into law. It simply took effect under Crist.
Reducing taxes on the wealthy has the same effect at the state level as it does at the federal level, which is, it frees individuals and businesses to spend and invest without regard to that form of taxation, thereby increasing the size of the economic pie for everyone. The intangibles tax was particularly egregious because it was a tax on invested wealth. Why should people who save and invest their income, after already paying taxes on it, be subject to another tax simply because they manage to amass a few bucks?
There are still plenty of business taxes in Florida, including a corporate income tax, if you’re worried that people aren’t paying enough taxes.
GOOD. CUT SPENDING.
“There are still plenty of business taxes in Florida”
some are the stealth taxes created by newcomers with californification of property rights. We need less government and one way to get is to strip local government of taxes.
I agree. When times are flush, they build dog parks. When times are a little tougher, they tell us we won’t have police protection. Stop doing things that are NOT the prerogative of government, and there will be plenty of money to do the things that ARE the prerogative of government. And, BTW, local Florida governments, entertaining peoples’ pets is not a proper function of government.
He gave voting rights to convicted felons a few weeks ago. Does that help characterize him for you?
IMPACT FEES, chopman...
we need higher impact fees....
the kumbaya idea du jour.....
aka ‘highway robbery as you go’....
“BUT WHY did the state get rid of the INTANGIBLE TAX on corporations and wealthy individuals ....is what I would like to know ??”
Could it be that only those with money create jobs?
Have you considered that if most state agencies were cut in half tomorrow, the only bad impact would be that Burger King would be swamped with job applications from people with no recognizable skills?
Cut the agencies in half!
Fire the Agencypersons! Do it now! Do it for the children!
Not to mention all the rest of us who are not living a life of ease with a life long ticket to an agency feeding trough.
