White House reacts to Clintons' comments

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 41 minutes ago

The White House on Thursday made fun of former President Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, for criticizing President Bush's decision to erase the prison sentence of former aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

"I don't know what Arkansan is for chutzpah, but this is a gigantic case of it," presidential spokesman Tony Snow said.

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has scheduled hearings on Bush's commutation of Libby's 2 1/2-year sentence.

"Well, fine, knock himself out," Snow said of Conyers. "I mean, perfectly happy. And while he's at it, why doesn't he look at January 20th, 2001?"

In the closing hours of his presidency, Clinton pardoned 140 people, including fugitive financier Marc Rich.

The former president tried to draw a distinction between the pardons he granted, and Bush's decision to commute Libby's 30-month sentence in the CIA leak case.

"I think there are guidelines for what happens when somebody is convicted," Clinton told a radio interviewer Tuesday. "You've got to understand, this is consistent with their philosophy; they believe that they should be able to do what they want to do, and that the law is a minor obstacle."

Sen. Clinton, seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said the Libby decision "was clearly an effort to protect the White House. ... There isn't any doubt now, what we know is that Libby was carrying out the implicit or explicit wishes of the vice president, or maybe the president as well, in the further effort to stifle dissent."

Former Vice President Al Gore said he found the Bush decision "disappointing" and said he did not think it was comparable to Clinton's pardons.

Could any even imagine the reaction if Scooter Libby's wife had just donated $400,000 to the Bush Library and then a full pardon was to be issued?

The reaction of the Democrats to this commutation defines hypocrisy.

Former Vice President Al Gore said he found the Bush decision "disappointing" and said he did not think it was comparable to Clinton's pardons.

Of course it's not comparable. GWB didn't receive thousands upon thousands of dollars for the pardon, nor did Laura's brothers.

Sheesh, it's not even close. Why did President Bush pass up such a huge money-making opportunity? The clintons certainly didn't.

Tony my friend, the sentencing judge is a moron. He CAN'T figure it out!

"It's different [from Clinton's pardons] because in this case the person involved is charged with activities that involved knowledge of what his superiors in the White House did," Gore said on NBC's "Today" show Thursday.

And people think this guy is highly intelligent.

No wonder the approval ratings of Congress have tanked. The Dems, like Conyers and Nostrilitis, only want to have hearings about Republicans while forgetting those in their own camp. The public, being smarter than the Dems give them credit, see through this B.S.

And let's not forget one of his own cabinet members Cisneros-
-- Henry Cisneros, who served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development during Clinton's first term in office. He was convicted of making false statements to FBI agents conducting a background investigation of him when he was nominated to the Cabinet post in 1993. They included misleading investigators about cash payments he made to a former mistress.

WJC all but held public auctions for presidential pardons while Hillary was busy packing all the White House china and linens for their move back to the trailer park. This kind of behavior is only made possible in a country where the media refuses to shine a light on this thinly veiled corruption.

And, while they are at it, investigate why the Barrett Report was quashed. There was a report that the IRS fought Barrett on orders from Hillary.

So she, not appointed to an official post nor confirmed by Congress, was directing the IRS to participate in partisan politics and they complied?

If she gets elected we’re done for.

I have an idea that shows “chutzpah”: Bush should issue two full pardons. One for Scooter, and another for Bill Clinton. It’ll drive ‘em nutz.

I had a similar thought on that subject as well. Bush could issue a pardon to Bill AND Hillary.

He could do this next year, say in mid summer. She would then be in a position to either accept the pardon, thus implying a pardon was needed or to decline the pardon, which would then bring up all the sins of that dark period from 1992 to 2000.

But the media would play it up as a 'desperation' move by Bush and it could very easily back fire.

In the closing hours of his presidency, Clinton pardoned 140 people, including fugitive financier Marc Rich.

Included in those pardoned on that day was E. Harley Cox of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Mr. Cox as chief legal counsel of the now defunct First Arkansas Savings and Loan, helped that company hide millions in bad loans from the auditors.

At one time there was interest in the Barrett Report, but interest seem to fade quickly. Clinton just wore everyone down.

If you google the barrett report, you will find a letter from Janet Reno denying Barrett authority to pursue the IRS even after a whistle blower said there were a great number of illegal things going on.
