New North Carolina Poll Shows Fred Thompson Surging To Double-Digit Lead Over Giuliani
Blogs For Fred Thompson ^ | 7/5/07 | Blogs For Fred Thompson.com

Posted on 07/05/2007 2:40:43 PM PDT by BlogsForFredThompson.com

Lane did not know just how fast his prophecy would come true! A poll from North Carolina just out this afternoon, and conducted this past Monday now has Fred Thompson vaulting to a huge lead over Rudy Giuliani! This poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, a non-partisan research group, surveyed 583 likely Republican voters. The results:

34% Fred Thomspon 15% Rudy Giuliani 13% Newt Gingrich 21% Undecided

Here is the actual text of the story:

On the Republican side, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson continues to lead the race, with 34 percent support. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's support fell for the second month in a row, to 15 percent, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich garnered 13 percent support. Another 21 percent of GOP voters said they were still undecided.

Public Policy Polling, a non-partisan research group, surveyed 629 likely Democratic primary voters and 583 likely Republican primary voters on Monday. The surveys have margins of error of 3.8 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

Interestingly, when I looked up the website for Public Policy Polling, I found the results of their poll from June 6:

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson has moved into the lead in the North Carolina Republican Primary. Thompson's support jumped from 25% of likely Republican primary voters in May to 37% in this month's poll, ousting Rudy Giuliani from the lead. In the Democratic race, John Edwards still leads his home state with the support of 30% of like Democratic primary voters.
The poll in the story Lane posted earlier is from a different outfit, and even though it was just reported on by the New York Sun today, the details say the poll was conducted June 13-15 and was a poll of "active voters." The poll showing Fred way ahead is a poll of "likely Republican voters" -- in other words, the people likely to vote in the Republican primary!

This poll shows huge momentum for Fred, moving from behind just over a month ago, to now leading Giuliani by 19%.

It’s Thompson’s conservatism and the perception of his electability. Romney, McCain and Giuliani are all mavericks and that’s not a good sell in the South.

Fred has had a good week. Second week in a row he’s led all Republicans in the Ras national poll, too.

Here in the South, we will always take the home town candidate over an outsider, and in the GOP primary, that makes for an unbeatable head start. Thompson/Hunter 2008!

Giulliani would be very, very hard pressed to win a single "blue" state.

...or maybe any state twice removed from New York.

Pretty apt analysis, I'd say, though don't know about anything south or west of maybe Pennsylvania for Rudy.

I see in the Cubs/National game that President Dubya is there taking the ballgame in. That's probably safer for the country than if conferring with his Atty. Gen. and DHS Sec.

I think Mitt could find some new life. I also am curently wondering about (and praying for and suggesting others do the same) Thompson's health.

Heh——like those “July Fourth” peaches (farmers call them).

They look peachy sweet and juicy in the basket——but they spoil and get rotten overnight.

I believe Thompson’s doctor made a statement about his cancer. I will say this—I have a neighbor down the street who has been “dying” of cancer for all 12 of the years that I’ve lived in the neighborhood. He’s just fine. He goes walking and drives around. Can’t tell that he has it. It may be the same type of cancer that Thompson has, for all I know.

Well, as bad as that is, at least he didn't date while he was married! :-)

But I suspect Fred has a very thick Teflon coating. He'd have to be found in bed with a live boy and a dead girl in order for his candidacy for the GOP Presidential nomination to be derailed at this point.

He just hired a known homosexual than used to work for Sanatorum. It looks bad. I don’t think it will derail him, but it will hurt him with the base. Fred needs to be more circumspect. Rudy’s homophilia is an anathema, Fred should avoid being painted the same. I am concerned.
