Scouts' firing range irks residents

Neighbors say clay shooting events disruptive

By Ivan Moreno, Rocky Mountain News

July 7, 2007

ELBERT - Neighbors say the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is anything but that. The realization came after an explosion of shotgun blasts from the camp in May, when Boy Scouts held a two-day clay shooting fundraiser.

"It sounded like Hamas had a training camp next door," said Elbert County Sheriff William Frangis, who fielded numerous calls from people who live near the ranch.

The Scouts say no one complained to them.

Although the camp has had a shooting range for rifles and shotguns for years, noise has not been an issue until now.

Neighbors say part of their frustration is that the Scouts only notified them of the event with the sound of the guns, and they never applied for permit from the county.

"They didn't talk to anyone; they just did it," said 75- year-old John Dunn, a former Elbert County commissioner and 44-year county resident who lives about a quarter mile from the Scout camp.

"The noise was unbelievable," Dunn said, adding that it was enough to scare the elk, deer, and birds in the vicinity. "We haven't seen them since."

The Scouts have planned five more fundraising events from July through August, but they're waiting for a permit from the county commissioners to continue using the clay shooting range. The commissioners will hear their case Wednesday.

But while there's a cease-fire for now, residents fear more events like the one held May 19 and 20 will not only disturb their peace but will bring down the value of their properties.

If the scouts and their range has been there for years, this might be a lot like moving next door to an airport or a gold course.

These whiners should have considered living close to a gun range before they purchased their homes...

Shotguns?

When I was in BSA, we learned on .22s.

This seems like a liberal nonsense account.

They were sponsoring a 'clays' fundraiser. Shotguns are used in such an event.

And for the record, there is a shotgunning merit badge offered by the BSA. The camp which Lurker Jr will be attending this month has a shotgun range for just that purpose.

There is a rifle & shotgun merit badge - it was my introduction to shooting.

I went to 10 Mile River scout camp in upstate NY - great times. I hope to have a son or sons to participate in Scouting with!

It was my introduction to firearms, a passion to this day. I have bigger guns now but love to shoot .22 LR - it brings me back in time.

I doubt they would have complained if had actually been Hamas next door. Instead, it's those intolerant Scouts.

I was wrong, they've split the old Rifle and Shotgun merit badge into two separate badges:

What BS ! Shotguns, particularly with clay loads, make minimal noise. This crap sort of reminds me of the Montgomery County, Md. that tried to have a guy arrested for smoking in his house, because she claimed she could smell it a couple of blocks away.

Unfortunately, the liberal left, after having ruined Kalifornia, has taken over much of the rest of the West and is in the process of trying to destroy it as well.

Nice comparison. This guy must be gay and have it in for the Scouts to make an asinine statement like that.

Republicans need to start contributing to the Scouts, the way the leftists contribute to the ACLU.

Seriously. It’s a great program. Nothing else like it.

We need to rally behind them. There are lots of nasty leftists out there fighting against them.

"It sounded like Hamas had a training camp next door,"

If an elected official said this about what goes on in the wahhabist mosques, it'd be hate speech and President Jorge would already be publicly condemning them. But calling peaceful American shooters terrorists is just business as usual.

Have a boy who was in scouting and now he is a National Guardsman and in college ROTC studying to become a ARMY officer. He won the Excellence in Armor award in basic and is third generation ARMY.

Scouting WORKS!

The military has been dealing with this for years. It's called urban intrusion and the base usually ends up closing mostly all because the people who moved near there were too stupid to check into what was in that locale before they moved in.

Living next to a gold course would be something.
