Lebanon To Erupt In 1 Week-Syria Calls On Citizens To Evacuate Lebanon

Syria has called on its citizens to leave Lebanon ahead of an expected "eruption" in that country, Arab and Iranian press reports have said.

The media reports were translated and made available by MEMRI in a special dispatch on Sunday.

"In the past few days, Arab and Iranian media reports have pointed to the possibility that Lebanon's current political crisis may become a violent conflict after July 15, 2007," the MEMRI dispatch said.

July 15 comes one day before a special UN Security Council meeting which is expected to discuss the possibility of stationing international experts on the Syria-Lebanon border, in order monitor the ongoing illegal cross border arms traffic to Hizbullah, thought to be originating from Iran and Syria.

The UN Security Council is also expected to meet next week to discuss a key report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a development which may bode badly for Syria.

"On July 5, 2007, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported that Syrian authorities had instructed all Syrian citizens residing in Lebanon to return to their country by July 15, 2007.

fixin' to get ready to begin the start of the initial discussions about possibily commencing the onset of a dialog about beginning ...

Yeah, put "experts" on the border. In fact, put the entire UN General Assembly on the border, linked arm to arm and let them sing "we thought we'd buy the world a joke ..."

My guess is beyond that. Syria wants its people out as they are anticiating doing something large...Initially launch attacks to which Israel will retaliate, between the two, they will probably level lots of real estate and then Syria will step it up...biological? chemical? which will wash through lebanon....
I would bet on Saddams WMD coming out.

Iran too will be busy making snowballs while syria pitches them.

I just popped over to IRNA and used the Arabic-English translator in Firefox to read the Arabic headlines. Apparently, Lebanon is a big, big problem for the Arab world. The leader of the Arab League is in Damascus today. Also, they are reporting that there is violent fighting in the Lebanese camps today. Here is the story on today's fighting:

The severity of the clashes between the Lebanese army troops and gunmen movement "Fateh Islam" Salafi in Nahr el-Bared camp for Palestinian refugees today, Monday, where violent battles between the two sides used different kinds of weapons.

The information contained in fierce battles that are taking place on various fronts, especially in the neighborhood Sasa located at the boundary between the camp and the old camp, the new, punctuated Kerr provided on more than one axis, particularly in the southern front and in the course of Nahr el-Bared.

وتحدثت المعلومات الوارده من مناطق الاشتباكات عن سقوط العديد من القتلي والاصابات في صفوف المسلحين السلفيين.She spoke information from the regions of the clashes many deaths and injuries among armed Salafis.

وذكرت هذه المعلومات ان وحدات الجيش اللبناني تقوم بقصف مركز منذ الصباح لمواقع المسلحين داخل المخيم بمدفعيه الدبابات الثقيله.The information that the Lebanese army units based Center bombing since the morning of sites gunmen inside the camp compound with tank heavy.

Absolutely true. I have lived there and if you postponed your trips because of a fear of war, you would never go. My wife and I will be there in a month (G-d willing.)

I put it in quotes because there are huge numbers of people who hold canadian citizenship and spend 98% of their time in Lebanon, and when the stuff hits the fan, they scream and holler to be evacuated, complain bitterly about the evacuation they are given (at government expense), and then come back to canada, go immediately to the medical system and get all fixed up, and when the unpleasantness is over, they demand to be taken back to Lebanon. Hence the quotes, and my opinion that they should be left in Lebanon to fish or cut bait.

Oh, ok, I understand. I didn’t know a lot of Candian citizens (with or without quotes) spent time in Lebanon. You learn something new everyday on FR.

Are these Canadians of Lebanese origin? Did they get Canadian citizenship through their French connection in some way?

I’m betting on a Syrian invasion of Lebanon, banking on the Israelis to stay out of it. The Syrian sock-puppet regime in Lebanon will then piss all over Israel, and the Israelis won’t have any effective way of retaliating.

Basically, Syria is going to take the Lebanese population hostage and dare Israel to punch them out.

From my experience in NJ, ALOT of Lebanese born Citizens and permanent legal alien residents have no real allegiance to the US. Most lie on their first application to get a visa to the USA and use altered birth certificates, saying they are 5 to 10 years older than they really are, so they can collect Medicare/SS 5 to 10 years earlier. They were born in Lebanon, marry someone from Lebanon, have their weddings funerals and summer homes in Lebanon, but carry the US passport as a citizenship of convenience thing. This refers to recent Lebanese migrants to the US, not to the migrant wave of Lebanese-Americans who have been here for 50 to 100+ years.

I agree that Syria is not just anticipating unrest in Lebanon; they must have something planned for after July 15, something that requires digging in.

With all the other threads about a looming war between Syria and Israel, something is up. Syria would be quite insane to use a first strike of WMD though. Quite insane.
