Sources: Howie Carr jumps to rival WTKK
Boston Herald ^ | 7/09/07 | Jessica Heslam

In a bombshell development, WRKO-AM radio host Howie Carr is jumping ship to rival station WTKK-FM, where he’ll take over the prized morning-drive slot, sources tell the Herald. Carr, whose contract with WRKO-AM (680) expires in September, will host WTKK’s morning drive show solo and replaces shamed syndicated talk jock Don Imus, who lost his national show after the “nappy-headed hos” scandal. Carr inked a multi-year deal with WTKK (96.9), sources said. Carr could not be reached for comment and is vacationing in Florida. His move to WTKK pits him against disgraced, ex-House Speaker Tom Finneran, Carr’s longtime nemesis. Finneran’s morning-drive show on WRKO has bombed since he got behind the mic earlier this year. WRKO was banking on the former speaker to boost their dismal morning ratings. Carr informed WRKO of his decision to leave today, sources said. A Boston Herald columnist, Carr is WRKO’s marquee talent and is their highest-rated radio host by far. He has been with the AM station for 20 years and has had his afternoon-drive show since 1994. After Imus was canned in April, former Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle replaced him on WTKK but left the station altogether last month after failing to strike a deal with WTKK. With his jump to FM, Carr escapes WRKO AM’s weaker signal and AM radio’s dwindling, younger audience.

I wonder how well Howie and Jay Severin will get along?

They probably will never see each other. Severin does his show from his house on LI. The real fun will be the crossovers with Jim Braude!

I will miss Max on Monday PM, and the usually lighthearted end of the week Friday afternoons.

The Carr family eventually sued and recieved an out of court settlement from Imus.

Carr's lawyer was Alan Dershowicz.

Same here. I dont listen to AM radio at all. I work late so I’m up later than most folks. I really am going to miss Howies afternoon show.
I think WRKO is in serious trouble now.

Oh yeah, Max. He can probably move to Howie’s show if he wants.

I wonder if Howie’s show will also eventually be shown live on MSNBC? Howie would help their ratings as well as be seen by a much wider, national audience. It’s a missed opportunity for MSNBC if they don’t do this, but Howie Carr has never been impressed by the existence of MSNBC to begin with. Howie makes fun of MSNBC a lot, and whenever he discusses the ratings of any of its shows, Howie’s “sound person” cues some chirping crickets. LOL

I'm sure, but that's not the point. My location and listening habits mean I'm probably not going to listen as much.

And, I put the show on at 4PM, and it's still Laura Ingraham (WVMT).

If this means Howie will be leaving the 3pm timeslot I hope my local station will put on Mark Levin even though it would have to be a delayed show from the day before

Jay finally moved to the Bay State. I believe he has settled on the North Shore. Marblehead, maybe.

There’s a product called “Replay Radio” that I use. It’s perfect for stuff like this. It will record any radio shows automatically for you so you can listen later. Sorry, not trying to plug anything — just passing along a tip.

Also take a look at http://www.highcriteria.com for Total Recorder.

I’ve been using it for years to record automatically off a number of inputs.

I’ve used it to record off the internet, but manually.

Did you know about this? I listen to Howie (frequently, but not every day) in my area on WHYN 560 AM (Springfield, MA). I kind of like him in that 3-7pm time slot... hope they still run his show during that time.
