WASHINGTON, July 9 (UPI) -- U.S. Intelligence experts said they fear Iran may try to thwart future military strikes against its nuclear facility by placing key parts underground.
U.S. officials and independent experts said Iran appears to be building a tunnel complex inside a mountain, The Washington Post reported Monday.

We are going to delay until the have NUKES, then it will be too late.
To: Flavius
The MSM will do almost anything to discount the simple fact that this tunneling is more likely to be in preparation for a nuclear weapon test, just as it was done in North Korea.

Not really. The Iranians/Persians were the first people on Earth to really get going with the use of tunnels for major irrigation projects.
They call their ancient system's tunnels "qanat".
Here's an article on them: http://www.livius.org/q/qanat/qanat.html

Only a liberal would be truly shocked by such a “revelation”.

Boy!!!
at this rate we should just give them a couple, maybe more.
one for tehran, one for the mountain.....

Oh, yeah, almost forgot ~ Iranians built tunnel complexes inside mountains all the time ~ this has been going on for nearly 4,000 years.
They probably already have all the large tunnels they need to hide stuff. Surprised we have American intelligence agents who are so stupid they failed to recognize that.
Guess every day is a whole new world to some of those folks eh?!

There are already over 100,000 miles of tunnels in Iran. Where do you propose starting with the nukes?

One thing I don't get -- if we set off big, conventional bombs on all the entries to an underground facility, isn't that going to make the underground facility hard to get into, or out of?
So what if some of their technicians are left inside, running out of food and water a month later.

tunnels for major irrigation projects. Wasn't talking about first to use. I was referring to hiding WMDs.

Lots and lots and lots of entrances. We only have 4,000 warheads ready.
Pick carefully.

You'd better believe that there are plenty of other folks in the Middle East with Qanats who thought of it before Saddam Hussein or the crazy guy in Libya.
Betcha' the Shah had it in mind.

YEah, they dig these suckers way back in the mountains ~ sometimes thousands of feet, and the distance to the surface may be so great they don't manage to prepare the irrigation tunnels to the top. Think "Cheyenne Mountain".
There are many articles about the qanat systems on the internet. Some of them are HUGE.
Osama Bin Laden made use of Qanats in Afghanistan in fact.
Iran is merely a place with a lot of qanat.

Isn't it right at the facility?
