Imagine getting all worked up over Andy Summers!
I’m sure Sting will show up wearing a “Free Mumia” t-shirt...
I'm sure Andy Summers just told this guy what he wanted to hear so he could get to his Ropa Vieja and Cafe con Leche
On a stage in Havana? Sure, and his biggest fan, Fidel, will be applauding wildly and waving one of those green light things...... /sarc.
“Imagine getting all worked up over Andy Summers!”
Andy Summers is an awesome player, and his contribution to the Police is always overlooked because Sting was the front man for one of the greatest rock bands of all times.
Now, as for Andy actually relaying the message on to Sting, that’s a different matter altogether...and the possibility that Sting will actually take up the cause? Well, let’s just say that in the world he inhabits, Cuban political prisoners are just not as sexy as the ability to hammer western business for African debt relief.
Of course, Sting conveniently ignores the fact that it was Western business that made him a famous and wealthy man, but that’s human nature for you...
Summers is a top flight musician, for sure. The author of the article refers to Sting as guitarist for the Police, which, as you know, if not 100 percent accurate.
Nice story. The Police play all over the world. They draw tremendous stadium crowds in places like Brazil and Argentina. Playing Havana was in this tradition. Of course Sting/Police should reconsider and not play there.
Sting calls the shots. The Police are reunited only because Sting finally consented. Summers and Copeland need the money a lot more than Sting
Where in that article does it say that Sting is the guitar player for the band? I re-read it 3 times so far and still can't find it.
Not at all. The Police are amongst the all-time greats, and they should be. Very talented guys who did something pretty great (mix rock and reggae with some very original technical innovations)in the days when all New Wave bands had the same shtick (big-haired, post-punk-wannabes with little talent). In my opinion, there were only half a dozen or so bands that emerged at the same time as The Police who could be comparably compared to them.
Anyone who doesn;t consider the Police somewhere in the Top 10 of all-time rock bands knows nothing about music, or worse, probably thought Disco was awesome.
While I’m not generally a fan of most mainstream rock music, I’ve got to say that The Police are/were one of the most overrated bands ever. Ever. A few good songs, sure, but that’s about it.
As a teenager, I loved the Police, but I don't think their music has aged very well.
You put the Clash on that list??? What drugs did you take back in the 80’s?
Agree with you on all, except the Clash (The Police EASILY get their spot), the Dead and Nirvana. In their place, I would put the Kinks, The Allman Brothers Band and Cream. In place of U2, I would put the Jimi Henrix Experience.
Rush, Yes or Van Halen (with David Lee Roth) would have gotten at least Honorable Mention on my list, as well.
My criteria is the quality of musicianship and the quality of contribution to the genre as a whole.
