China assures food safety for athletes at 2008 Beijing Olympics

BEIJING (AP) -- Despite food safety problems, China says athletes, coaches and officials at the 2008 Beijing Olympics can be assured of healthy meals.

"All the procedures involving Olympic food, including production, processing, packaging, storing and transporting will be closely monitored," Sun Wenxu, an official with the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, said Tuesday.

China has come under international pressure to boost food safety and monitoring mechanisms following repeated scandals over contaminated Chinese food exports.

That has underscored chronic problems with adulterated ingredients and fake products in the domestic food supply, raising questions of how well China can guarantee the purity of food for the games.

Athletes, coaches, officials and journalists are expected to consume more than 330 tons of fruit and vegetables, 82 tons of seafood and 750 liters of ketchup, the official Xinhua News Agency said. They're also expected to eat 131 tons of meat, 21 tons of cheese and drink 75,000 liters of milk.

Xinhua said consultants have recommended 1,000 Chinese dishes to Olympic organizers.

Easy way to fix the issue...just close down to all Chineses food imports until they can assure the world they are safe.

Money talks with Commie pinkos when they need it for POWER AND ARMS.

Well I hope so. They shot the guy who was most recently responsible for food safety.

Who says Communism doesn’t work? We have so much trouble getting rid of non-performers here in the West...look how efficient THEY are!

I haven't seen it on Free Republic but there was an article somewhere stating the Chinese EXECUTED the former head of their Food division or whatever it is called.

I wonder how many people they will have to kill to keep the Olympics safe.

China says athletes, coaches and officials at the 2008 Beijing Olympics can be assured of healthy meals.

Okay, so that is fine for the athletes, coaches and officials, but what about those that are spending outrageous amounts of money to see the venues along with the opening and closing ceremonies? Doesn't say a word about them, does it?

Oh Mr. Johnson, so sorry to hear that you are dying of glycerol poisoning from eating contaminated food.

Plan "B" is to execute another government official.

the Chinese EXECUTED the former head of their Food division or whatever it is called

The Chinese executed a man who had headed up their equivalent of our Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For, in essence, corruption by being on the take from the activities he regulated. Frankly, I have no sympathy - the SOBs killed my cat by exporting tainted crap to us.

Too bad we wouldn't even consider executing our FDA headman. It would solve a lot of problems for the next 50 years or so.

...the Chinese EXECUTED the former head of their Food division or whatever it is called.

And then they ground up his remains and exported him as pet food.

“safer to stay home and watch it on the tube.....”

...or just skip it all together. The way broadcasters have sucked all the competition out of the programing and filled it with so called “human interest” stories, the Olympics is no longer worth watching anyway. Especially the Chinese edition. Screw the Olympics.

How about cats. Cat steaks, could keep the athletes in great shape. Feline meats. A real sure menu coming your way soon. Cat lovers beware. Go eat your veggies.

Now, all that's left is to take care of that polluted air. Oh, maybe it'll rain that day(?) ;)
