Fred Thompson not the next Reagan, says conservative journalist

An author and investigative journalist believes conservatives are in for a big disappointment if they believe former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is the next Ronald Reagan.
Dr. Jerome Corsi has not joined the chorus of conservative pundits who are excited about the possibility of the former Tennessee senator becoming president. He says while people are yearning for another Ronald Reagan, Fred Thompson is not the answer.
"I don't think some of the positions he's taken are going to be truly satisfying to real conservatives unless they want to go again experience more 'battered-voter syndrome' like they've done under Bush," he comments. "They can make Thompson into what voters want him to be, but unfortunately he just isn't what they're projecting into him."
Corsi, who has been active with the Minutemen, a pro-border security group, predicts that Thompson would be very much like George W. Bush on the border issue. He notes that Thompson's record in the Senate indicated he supported the expansion of migrant worker programs. Corsi also wonders when people will realize that Thompson, who is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, is a globalist who would push for open borders.
For those reasons, Thompson will not emerge as the GOP presidential candidate, opines Corsi. "I think [he is] kind of a red herring," he says. "He's being thrown to conservatives as a bone, so they have some horse in the race. But the truth is, Fred Thompson is not a conservative.
Corsi has told OneNewsNow that he has been approached by a third party to possibly run for president himself.

So silly to say that anyone is going to be the next Reagan, (or Kennedy, etc...). I’d just like for someone to be the next conservative...
To: MountainFlower
Sorry, I’ve never been an opponent of legal immigration, only illegal immigration. I think the gross abuses in the legal immigration system being exploited right now will stop being abused when people realize that the only way to become an American citizen, and not be deported, is to follow the legal mandates.

Of course the pundits also did not think that Ronald Reagan would be a “Reagan” either, until they started looking back at all his accomplishments.

To: MountainFlower
Let’s just see if Fred is willing to declare himself on the illegal immigrant issue.
Of all the candidates, I thought he made some of the best statements when the anmesty bill was at it’s hottest and looked as if it might pass, and he didn’t shuffle around the matter the way Mitt did. But I would agree that this is an issue on which Fred will have to declare himself.

Fred Thompson is not the next Reagan, but to compare him to Bush is idiotic. Thompson can actually articulate an argument and is not afraid to be a conservative.
To: MountainFlower
Maybe he’ll be the first Fred Thompson.

You have absolutely no evidence of why this person supports Fred Thompson. It is very rude of you to assume you do and to call people shallow for your own assumptions.

Fred Thompson is NOT who people want him to be. His Senate record is RINO - like John McCain's. Come to think of it, we don't want the latter. Thompson may end up being a Bush clone. I know its disappointing, but there's no conservative candidate with a wide following.

I remember a classmate in college speculating worriedly that Reagan would be the Antichrist. (Ronald -- 6 letters. Wilson -- 6 letters. Reagan -- 6 letters.)

There was and will ever be only one Ronald Reagan, God bless him! I think one difference between Fred and President Bush and the immigration issue is the difference in their educational backgrounds. President Bush has an MBA, so he is always going to look at things from a pro-business point of view. Fred, on the other hand, is a lawyer and views things from a “law and order” perspective. Being from the South, he understands the role that migrant workers play in the agricultural community, but I can not see him favoring anything like amnesty for those who have broken US laws.

Don’t you just love this straw man that the conservative journalists keep setting up just to keep knocking down? I don’t think Fred Thompson is the next Reagan; I think he’s Fred Thompson. They’re just trying to dissuade conservatives from voting for him; don’t know who they want us to vote FOR.

I think [he is] kind of a red herring. Hes being thrown to conservatives as a bone, so they have some horse in the race. The sole aim of a metaphor is to call up a visual image. When these images clash as in The Fascist octopus has sung its swan song, the jackboot is thrown into the melting pot it can be taken as certain that the writer is not seeing a mental image of the objects he is naming; in other words he is not really thinking. That FDT is able to illicit this kind of excitement and interest...even fear...suggests that he is more than the next GWB. Love him or hate him, GWB is not a conservative. He had to re-invent the term. GWB is a compassionate conservative...whatever that means. FWIW, conservatism is very compassionate.
We need someone who is proud conservative and can articulate the conservative philosophy. I don't know if he is the next Ronald Reagan, I don't think anyone will ever be; that mold's been broken. But, FDT is able to explain the conservative philosophy like Reagan did and, like Reagan, he isn't one bit afraid to be a conservative.
These days, that's rare for some reason, as though being a conservative is something you don't admit to in public. FDT proudly does admit it and that scares the beejeezus out of lots of people. Fun to watch.

Sure are a lot of ANTI-FREDERALIST threads lately.
I’m sort of bored and disturbed that people invest so much into anti-movements, when that’s really failed historically. This is called the pro-life, pro-family, pro-military, etc...forum, not the anti-forum. I could understand the anti-rudy view within here, because he sparks very little interest in any of those views.
I figure this sort of thread would better be in DU, not here. This is merely opinion.

There has never been a 'next' Lincoln, Washington, Eisenhower or McKinley or 'next' any president who is a duplicate of a previous president.
There will never be a 'next' Mickey Mantle, Dale Earnhardt, or 'a next you or me!
The whole premise is absurd.

You may remember when the last amnesty took place?
For that matter.. you may remember that Regan had been a democrat and pro choice (instead of having a couple statements that some view as less than 100% pro-life but a voting record that was clearly pro life.

Is Thompson the perfect conservative? Probably not. The only useful question: “Is Thompson the best conservative running who can win the Republican nomination.” We sure as hell are not going to get anything conservative out of the Democrats.
