Tavo, speaking as an ex-NYer (born & raised), the woman was RUDE ... she had no right to fling a personal, biased, nasty comment your way. I’m guessing that she heard you speaking Spanish and assumed you wouldn’t understand her and so felt at liberty to be a clod. Ignore her. Don’t let it get under your skin. The woman probably went on down the street and passed someone else and made some other rude, nasty, ignorant remark and this is how she gets her sad little jollies. No excuse for bad manners. I’m sorry that you were offended. As my Irish gramma would say, ‘consider the source!’

You came in legal. You’ve worked hard. And you’ve followed the rules. She neither knew any of that nor cared to. She’s a waste of good breath to even bother about.

So there!

Sir:
It is American nature to be suspicious of those who behave as though there is something else besides the lack of transparency where sometimes something or someone(fear and distortion or a little dramatic writing) portrays itself as victim-hood.

I personally know not whether to give you the benefit of doubt, or convict your writing as just another describing something other than what was written.

I shall not ask to be excused, I am an American, and since you are a citizen, I would ask you behave as an American. I think I ask not too much. Speak our language, if you live here. Teach your children to be Americans, I ask not too much. My children are naturalized (whatever that means) Americans. I ask only your children and my children know what it means to have a common language and a common home called America.

If I chose to live in your former country I would have the decency when in public to speak the language of mexico. (little m - my thoughts of mexico exactly)

Now remember, Americans do not have the right to not be offended. I remember the rest of the world told US so.

Sorry, but I’ve had worse things said to me while walking by a construction site. I don’t think the amount of money I’ve paid in taxes over the last 10 years has anything to do with it.There are rude people all over the world.

Glad you’re here legally.

On the one hand, I do feel for your situation. After all, YOU don’t seem to be the problem here. HOWEVER, you ARE being too sensitive because you must realize that most of your foreign brethren ARE the problem! They abuse their status as a guest to my country every day and this is what the woman who gave you lip on the street is reacting to.

So, you must realize that the American woman you came across is about fed up with people who are like you in being a foreigner. Of course, she could not have known that you were in keeping with our laws, but can you DOUBT that MOST of the people she might confront thus would be in violation of our laws??

So, if you want to stay here you’ll have to realize that this is what you’ll run up against and it ISN’T the fault of the average American, but the fault of our politicians and the foreigners who abuse our system.

In other words, I’m saying LIVE with it or if you don’t like it go home... and take your kids with you!

Otherwise, welcome to my country but understand our frustrations.

1. You have been in this country for a decade and have only now experienced xenophobia. Consider yourself lucky. It is a natural impulse no less than your indignation.
2. Have you looked at Mexican immigration and naturalization policies?
3. Anchor babies are very real. You and your wife may be here legally, but many are not. For them, their children are anchors, welfare checks, and insurance policies.
3. Do you intend to become an American citizen? If so, why should your children have Mexican passports? Why not speak English to them.
If you don't consider American citizenship important, why should your children have American citizenship?
No offense intended. My father was a citizen when I was born and my mother a permanent resident. They spoke to me in English as a child, although they could easily have used Hebrew. However, becoming an American meant something to them.

We came to the New York metro region under a work visa, we've lived here for 10 years and are now US permanent residents.

Obviously, xenophobia is wrong and exists everywhere. Are you angry at the single person you encountered, or at your 12+ million fellow Mexican citizens that have violated the laws that you apparently respected? Are you upset at your Mexican government, that encourages and assists your fellow countrymen in their violation of U.S. laws? If people from Mexico did not crimmigrate to the U.S. do you think that this encounter would have occurred?

When 12 people sneak into a country, there would mimimal xenophobia; when 12+ million sneak in, right or wrong, it is likely to increase.

Being a member of FR for a little over a year you seem to be a one issue poster, so I'm wary of your story.

Sorry.

Am I being overly sensitive about this? I don't think so.

Yes you are.

Your argument is with your compatriots that have abused this country and created the attitude that caused someone to (mistakenly) wail on you.

Just as people get suspicious of young Muslims when they see them, the problem is not with those that hold the opinions, it is with those that shaped them.

Ten years ago, no-one here referred to young Mexicans as "anchor babies, or feared young Muslims, what do you think happened to change that attitude?

The children born in the United States to illegal-alien mothers are often referred to as “anchor babies.” Under current practice, these children are U.S. citizens at birth, simply because they were born on U.S. soil. They are called anchor babies because, as U.S. citizens, they become eligible to sponsor for legal immigration most of their relatives, including their illegal-alien mothers, when they turn 21 years of age, thus becoming the U.S. “anchor” for an extended immigrant family.

While there is no formal policy that forbids DHS from deporting the illegal-alien parents of children born in the U.S., they rarely are actually deported. In some cases, immigration judges make exceptions for the parents on the basis of their U.S.-born children and grant the parents legal status. In many cases, though, immigration officials choose not to initiate removal proceedings against illegal aliens with U.S.-born children, so they simply remain here illegally.

Thus, the U.S.-born children of illegal aliens not only represent additional U.S. population growth, but act as ‘anchors’ to eventually pull a large number of extended family members into the country legally. In fact, an entire industry has built up around the U.S. system of birthright citizenship. Thousands of pregnant women who are about to deliver come to the United States each year from countries as far away as South Korea and as near as Mexico so that they can give birth on U.S. soil. Some come legally as temporary visitors; others enter illegally. Once the child is born, they get a U.S. birth certificate and passport for the child, and their future link to this country is established and irreversible.

As an aside, I think the concept of anchor babies is largely a myth.

In 2002 my daughter in law had her first child at Good Sam Hospital in Phoenix, it was hard to find the little tyke in the nursery amid all the other babies.

Last year, she had her second at the same venue, this time it was easy to pick her out in the nursery, she was the white baby..

Although I have some sympathy for you, I can tell you what my grandparents said to my dad and his brothers...we are in America and you had better speak English. There were no exceptions...period.
My grandma also said the “beatings continue until the attitude changes” but thats another post. (In case your are wondering, Sicilian.)

My ex sis-in-law is American Indian. Very very dark skinned. Illegal aliens walk up to her not knowing her from a hole in the ground and start speaking espanol at her. This pisses her off to no end. She in turn starts speaking flawless Japanese which she studied in Tokyo when she lived there and wanted to at least make an attempt to fit in.

The illegals usually give her a nasty look and storm off.

The lady was RUDE to bring it up BUT your children ARE anchor babies in every since of the word. They only have citizenship because they were born here to 2 non-citizens.

Your plans are to have them be dual or hyphen Americans, so this just proves the point further.

You know this full well and are only trying to stir things up with words like xenophobic in your rant. You would have to be living under a rock not to know of the immigration bill that our President and Senate was trying to force upon us that was just defeated, so spare me your “I don’t understand what’s happening” lines. I may not agree with this lady’s rudeness but don’t expect us to think you’re that stupid to NOT know what’s been going on with immigration the past year.

Also New York City is probably one of the rudest bunch of aholes on the planet, so don’t expect us to think this is the first time you have ever been insulted. NYC people excel “in being all they can be” in rudeness. Paris is probably the only place that would give them competition. Your “woe is me” tale is just that. I’m sure you made it up and are trying to stir the pot to see what happens. The funny thing is the new immigration bill would have shafted legal immigrants such as yourself and given the illegals a better status than yourself.

Anchor babies , no myth.

Just come to San Diego to any ER.
As soon as the gals are ready to unload, they
are across the border at any number of ERs.

Many many thousands of anchor babies are born here a yr.,
which makes them an American Citiz. They can then collect
from the San Diego tax payer, their needs others have to work for.

We are losing tens of millions of dollars a year in
San Diego supporting these illegals.

Or it could just be a lame, pre-fabricated human interest story masquerading as a vanity post.

Millions of illegal-aliens are roaming our nation at will.

That's in addition to the million plus legal immigrants coming in every year.

Lawful, fed-up citizens are in a nasty mood. You'd better get used to it.
