Our carriers are pretty old now for sure, but they were built for a different era, Cold War ASW. The pic is of the proposed new carriers for the RN.

That looks pretty sweet. I didn’t mean to offend early, just the width of the wing tips appeared close to 60% of the width of the ship.

not a problem man, its a fact that we need to upgrade some of our hardware. Still, for the time being the Invincible class is good enough to do the jobs, and with HMS Ocean, the UK has enough firepower to deal with most eventualities.

We dont do carriers, but our new type 45 destroyers will be a class apart.

That came to mind, but I was leaning more with the troop carriers in Starship Troopers.

We will do, we will do. Swiss Des announced in the Commons today that we’ll stop faffing around & build the CVFs. 65000 tons (metric - a bit over 70000 US tons) each.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I'm curious about one of the posted pictures here.  I'm wondering what the operational purpose is of a helicopter, apparently hovering at standby, while the Osprey lands?

Is it because the Osprey is a new aircraft with new landing procedures, and the helicopter crew is providing a standby rescue support role in case of a mishap during landing?

Just curious :-)

It’s a British Anti Submarine Helicopter, the large dome hanging down from the side means it is actually working in that capacity(the dome can be raised and lowered).

Thanks so much for your informative reply, it's sincerely appreciated!  That's something that I hadn't considered.....

I suppose then that the helicopter was deployed some distance from the carrier to scout for subs and to maintain security for the flight path while the Osprey was on approach, and now that the Osprey is landing the helicopter is returning as well?

No, the wheels are up and the dome is in the deployed position, it cannot land that way.
