Assuming there are states that already have laws keeping convicted felons and those with existing extreme mental conditions from owning or possessing firearms, I would try and get such laws passed in those that do not. If there are gun laws I do not like, and believe me, there are a lot of them I don't, I will work within the system to have them overturned!
Knowing full well that some on this thread already do not support or wish to defend any form of existing government besides one they themselves wish to form following the strict views of their own...
And will with their dying breaths make anything I say coming straight from the Nazi Party...
I must say I am an optimist and believe in American and the Constitution that has governed us for over two hundred years. We must put our faith in the ability to govern ourselves through the governments of the states and the federal system. I would not stand outside crying wolf when the only way to bring about change is to work within the system. We did it under Ronald Reagan and we can do it again... And again if necessary.
Granted, I do no like the trend we have with the Liberal Democrats trying to have us lose the War on Terror and will pledge my support and my fortune to whom ever I believe will fight the good fight for me. I find that in Fred Thompson.
I will support him to the best of my ability and if he is the nominee of the GOP, he shall have my vote. If Fred does not make it, I will not sulk and waste my vote. I will vote for the Republican nominee as I can not see any of the major GOP candidates that would not be better than any Democrat.
So, I guess would say I am for the Constitution and will work to bring it back to what the Founding Fathers meant it to be as stated in the Federalist Papers...
However, we must temper the changes time and technology has brought in the past 200 someodd years. I would have no problem at all with law abiding citizens owning fully automatic weapons nor any and all such lawful citizens carrying a pistol on their persons or their hips in plain view. As Bob Heinlein said, an armed society is a polite one. That does not mean I want each and all to have nuclear weapons nor do I want the insane or felons running around with nerve gas or bottles of nitro.

No gun law is going to keep a felon from getting a gun.
They still manage to smuggle them into prisons, every once in a while.
Anybody who wants a gun can get one.

Of course, if one tries hard enough they can beak any law, but that does not make having such a law foolish. You punish those who break the laws and if they do it often enough you either keep them in prison for life or you execute them. I prefer the latter for serious career felons, but hey, that's just the naziness in my soul I guess...

The basic problem: The amount of chemicals one of these idiots uses in a day would, if produced and sold legally, cost a couple of dollars. With the “WarOnDrugs(TM)” however, it’s costing him four or five hundred a day and he’s dealing at a ten percent fence so that he has to steal $5000 worth of gods to pay for his drugs. That is, a dollar’s worth of chemicals is being translated into $5000 worth of crime, times the number of such idiots out there times 365. No nation can afford that.
I do not believe any of us wants that. Many of us are leery of a government with the mentality that because someone stole the teacher's pencil, no one goes out for recess, though. It is a great disincentive to being responsible. YMMV

Well, we have “afforded” it at the present level for quite a few years. But this speaks to the advantage of the Fair Tax (national sales tax) rather than an income tax system. Under a sales tax, government gets tax revenue from people who today don’t report or pay income taxes.

There has to be some parents in this country who believe in teaching their kids personal responsibility.
