The Cold War is back
spectator.co.uk ^ | 14 July 2007 | Fraser Nelson

Posted on 07/13/2007 5:14:07 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

A little over a week ago, Vladimir Putin tested a weapon deadlier than anything developed by the Soviet Union. A missile launched from a submarine in the White Sea entered the stratosphere and returned precisely on target 3,800 miles away in the Russian Far East — the other side of the world. Such tests are meant to send messages. The target could just have easily been Tehran, Los Angeles or London. It signalled that Russia means business. After a hiatus of two decades, the arms race is back. ...The Russian military is once again treating Nato as the glavny protivnik, the primary enemy, and drawing up plans for a nuclear war. And Putin’s explicit aim is to challenge, and then counter, America’s world dominance. ...

In 2001, the defence budget was 140 billion roubles; today it stands at 870 billion (£16.7 billion) — a sixfold increase, and the fastest in Russia’s peacetime history. Last year, he added six new intercontinental missiles to his arsenal, 12 launch vehicles, 31 battle tanks and seven Mi-28N night attack helicopters. And this is but a small taste of what is to come.

The missile tested last week takes off so fast that no missile defence system could detect it in time. The new variant of the Topol-M missile will have multiple warheads, which splinter so they cannot be shot out of the sky. ...Meanwhile, Mr Putin has learnt to use energy as a weapon. ...

Precisely what Mr Putin intends to do with this muscle was made astonishingly clear in February when he delivered a speech at the Munich security conference. It was a ‘J’accuse’ to America, serving notice that Russia had moved from ally to adversary. ‘The United States has overstepped its borders in all spheres — economic, political and humanitarian, and has imposed itself on other states,’ he declared. ‘This is the world of one master, one sovereign.’ And his objective is to challenge such hegemony.

Three months ago, for example, the Vladimir Missile Army held a five-day exercise simulating full-on nuclear war with America. It practised moving its Topol-M missile under camouflage, to fool Western satellites. The army commander then gave details in an interview to the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper — in full knowledge that translated versions would instantly arrive on the desks of Western intelligence agencies. It was the nearest thing to writing the CIA a ‘from Russia with love’ memo.

These are not the clandestine methods of the Cold War. All this missile testing, ostentatious war-gaming and tub-thumping is clearly designed to draw attention to Russia. It is consistent with a bid to lead a new power axis — perhaps based upon the gas cartel which Russia is discussing with Iran, Qatar and Venezuela. Mr Putin visited the Middle East soon after making his anti-American outburst as if preparing the ground for a new coalition of aggrieved states hostile to America.

If we had one of these, the Democrats would call it a destabilizing, first strike weapon.

the time he phrased it slightly differently to an adviser, unaware that his microphone was still live and his remarks were being broadcast over the speaker system in the next room. ‘I’ve got him eating out of my hand,’ the President whispered. ‘You give these Russkies some cake and they’ll give you their souls.’

I remember the "reading his soul" remark, but I never heard this one.

Any Freepers remember this?

The Cold War never really ended...now it’s just resuming its old form (arms race). Russia’s getting serious now, and if they ally with China they could really make life miserable for the West.

The baby boomers “fought” the last Cold War. The next generation is going to have to fight this one. Looks like we are the new Cold Warriors.

Say, wasn’t there some old Chinese curse that went “May you live in interesting times”? Looks like they’re making the times interesting for us.

I remember the whole 'soul' remark by the President, but believe you me, I WOULD have remembered something like 'give these Russkies some cake', etc.

It may be possible but it sounds more like fabrication and speculation out of the UK to me.

As for Putin's mighty missiles, this is nothing new, it was back in the late 50's and early 60's that Khrushchev was rattling his rockets and we know how that turned out.

Putin may be KGB, but he's living in the past if he thinks he's going to recapture the dubious glory of the former Soviet Union.

Or Beijing and Shanghai. I'm sure the Russians want to reassure the Chinese as to their deterrent abilities.

Really? Six new ICBMs? 31 New Main Battle Tanks?

We could build 120 new ICBMs per year and 500 tanks to boot. We can up the ante and add 200 first line aircraft. And 20 surface warships. And 5 submarines.

This article is silly sensationalism...this argument was settled in the 80's.

Yup, the dems will "take care of us" alright!

On Oct 5, 2006, Democrat Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers Jr, *gave a speech* to the World Can't Wait--Drive Out the Bush Regime organization.

Here are a few not-so "anti-war" statements from the Workers World Party front, Troops Out Now. (clarifications within brackets were inserted by myself, a link to the original source is included at the end of the statements-LC) :

TROOPS OUT NOW: "It is time for the antiwar movement to acknowledge the absolute and unconditional right of the Iraqi people to resist the occupation of their country without passing judgment on their methods of resistance.[i.e., it's ok to saw the heads off of captured and bound hostages while they beg hopelessly for their lives, or to car bomb tens of freedom-seeking Iraqis at a time while they line up to join the police force or cast votes in the country's first ever free election. Even dragging school teachers out of a classroom and shooting them before the terrified eyes of their little students is cool with us. (this actually happened btw)-LC]...

their statement continues...

"Even the founding charter of the United Nations clearly affirms the right of an occupied people to resist by force of arms."

"We need to demand the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all U.S. occupation troops from Iraq."[what good little communist doesn't want a Russian-backed Iran to gain control of Iraq?-LC]

"We must support politically, morally and organizationally members of the U.S. armed services who are resisting the war, moreover, we must encourage this resistance." "There must no longer be any hesitation on the part of our movement regarding our support of the struggle of the Palestinian people to free themselves from occupation.[in other words, blowing up innocent civilians at restaurants and shopping malls is just fine with us-LC] As a movement we have made a huge step forward in this regard. There must be no turning back."

"We must work to facilitate the widest unity between all of the forces that are seriously organizing against the war and occupation."

All of the above statements, minus my 'clarifications', can be found at this Troops Out Now web page:

Alexandr Litvinenko knew Mr. Putin quite well. He tried to expose him for the thug that he is. He wrote books, helped make a movie and did most of the research to prove that Putin and the KGB(FSB) are behind most of the terrorism in the world and specifically al-Qaeda, naming al Zawahiri the fellow traveler that we see on video these days.

So don't think for a minute that Putin and the Chi-Coms aren't out to get us. Litvinenko was murdered shortly after exposing the KGB plan to destablize the USA with a terrorist nuke followed by a multiple strike from Russia.

Oh I don't doubt their intentions, not at all. You can take the Putin out of the Communist empire, but you can't take the Communist out of the Putin and the rest of his comrades.

And as for the ChiComs?

They are the ONE major reason we should keep a surplus of nuclear warheads on hand. It will take megatons to deal with their masses.

Busy day today... another ping for interesting info out of Russia. It seems they've got a nifty new weapon...

"A little over a week ago, Vladimir Putin tested a weapon deadlier than anything developed by the Soviet Union. And Putin’s explicit aim is to challenge, and then counter, America’s world dominance. ."

All of these little things are adding up in my head, and the sum total is NOT good... Putin's Youth Groups, a new weapon, pulling out of the arms treaty -- and that's just in today's news alone!

Don't forget the anti-American rhetoric, or his meetings with Chavez, or his refusal to help fight in the WOT, and his friendship with Iran, and putting together that China/Russia/Iran organization in news yesterday.

I sure hope our military officials are paying attention and are on top of this one....

Seems we just never learn. One would think by now we would understand what makes the really weirdly wired gray matter between Russian ears work. I am an expat living in one of the FSU republics for the past 3 years. The Russians are just plain paranoid about everything not to mention that they are without doubt the “pushiest” people I have ever seen in my life. Far as I am concerned for some reason (think Dwight Eisenhower and his speech about the military-industrial complex) we seem to want to provoke the Russians. It is the height of insanity for us to put missles in Eastern Europe and anyone who has any sense of the Russian mentality (or lack thereof) knows it. Regardless of how well intentioned we are the Russians are just plain Paranoid..always have been and always will be. Everyone in our government knew EXACTLY the response that would come out of Russia and it is such a stupid plan that it has to be PLANNED STUDIPITY.

I figure we’re about half way through five-year-plan number four since the wall came down and they started playing possum. The influx of Western Cashola has enabled them to retool their military industrial complex. Numerous Soviet”ex”patriots are now inside the USA working within our national infrastructure.

I agree with you... The communist threat was far from over when the Berlin wall fell. Most people believed the old dangers to be gone when that happened, and we forget about the insidiousness of their plans. You are right that many in our government are ‘closet’ communists.

What’s even scarier is that people like Hillary and other members of the Democrat party are ‘openly’ socialist. One only needs to read the reaction to Chávez at DU to understand that these people are the ‘new breed’ of socialists and they are EVERYWHERE! Simply look at the protests of the ‘anti-war’ crowd. Most are organized by communist organizations and they’ve got our younger generations duped into thinking that socialism is the ‘savior’ of all those who are suffering — even when it’s due to their own irresponsibility.

What these ‘useful idiots’ don’t understand is that the ‘socialism’ they are fighting for opens the door to dictatorship in a heartbeat... They use the word socialism, but in reality it is communism — the ‘people’ are nowhere in the equation with these politicians, it’s ALL government control.

I could go on and on, but I know that most on this forum understand what I’m talking about... It’s a scary world we live in nowadays with threats coming from many places.

I happen to agree with you that it’s a little strange for us to tempt them with the plan to put missiles in Poland... Instead we should, IMHO, be helping Poland create their OWN defenses as our ally — not be the ones running it. Russia couldn’t say very much if it was Poland doing the work — they have every right to protect their sovereignty given the history in that nation...

Then again, perhaps our government realizes what Putin is up to and wants to push the inevitable showdown up so that Russia and the others (China, Venezuela, Iran) do not have time to prepare as much as they could if it’s on their timetable???

I don’t know, but I sure don’t like these games that any of the dictators or other diplomats are playing...

You are correct, except that there are so many who do not understand that the protests on the streets of America, or any place in the world, show the protesters with a ‘raised-clenched’ fist.........

As does hilary, pelosi and several other Americans, all the way back to the young kerry and his jane fonda crowd.

The muslim protesters always show the clenched fist signal.

I didn’t know Putin had said that (about funding the anti-war movement). I have to say it doesn’t surprise me a bit though seeing as most of the anti-war protest groups are in reality Communist organizations (like A.N.S.W.E.R.).
