This time, he has a fish tale that will likely hit you right where your taste buds are, and might have you looking twice at the menu. For his report for “Today,” Tom talks to G. Bruce Knecht author of “Hooked: A True Story of Pirates, Poaching, and the Perfect Fish,” about how this popular fish has been so overfished that it is now disappearing from the world’s oceans.

Some animals and fish disappear for a number of reasons. If they didn’t we would still have those big monster animals running around. Life goes on. One animal or fish leaves and others takes its place. Nature doesn’t live in a vacuum like some humans do.

This is a fascinating story. The Chilean Sea Bass, known originally as the Patagonian Toothfish, was unknown till the late 70s. Even then, it was used mainly as a filler in fish fingers and the like. Suddenly, the gourmet industry discivered the fish and reckless overfishing has pretty much led to the extinction of the fish in LESS THAN 40 years.
Guess there are some perils to being popular...LOL.
BTW, Wall St. Journal had an excellent article a few months ago on the high stakes game being played over the remaining toothfish/sea bass stocks by various countries.
I wish algore would vanish.

What’s the problem here? Chilean Sea Bass (also known by the name Dissostichus eleginoides or Patagonian Toothfish is a legal fish species, though regulated.
Ducks are regulated too - so does that mean if he eats duck for dinner we should beat him down?
I do wonder how many of his Carbon Credits he burned up to have that meal, though.

Escolar is fantanstic. However its hard to find in Seattle. Evidently a bunch of fish markets including Whole Foods won't carry it because its rumored to cause the "runs" in some people. I'm evidently not one of them.
Have you ever heard that? Personally, picking between Escolar and Chilean Sea Bass would be a tough choice.

these factory ships lay out nets that leave a path of destruction on the seabed, slurping up all the fish, and everything on a wide swath, leaving an underwater desert... these ships IMHO are one the most significant causes in the species decline

Purchasing the fillets from a source which does the following will probably remove the “runs” problem:
1. Provide American style toilets.
2. Stock the toilet room with toilet paper.
3. Install, and maintain, sinks (with soap, even!).
4. Insist that the employees be taught how to use them.
In the American food industry, cleanliness IS godliness.

Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 06:29:21 PM PDT At a reception that was decidedly upscale and beyond the reach of the average Democratic voter, Al Gore's daughter got married at a lavish Beverly Hills ceremony. On the menu at the "rehearsal dinner" was the endangered chilean sea bass (link to article about wedding and about fish's endangered status), for 75 people. It seems that the same people who preach self-abnegation for the average person, e.g. Al Gore in the US, and David Suzuki in Canada, have problems foregoing such luxuries as private jets, SUV's, tour buses and limousines. Big houses full of creature comforts are for them; "green" living is for the hoi-poloi. Though I am a liberal Democrat, I am ashamed that we share the hypocrisy of the right, and are equally out of touch with ordinary people. What can ordinary, hard working people who may be asked to pay a "carbon tax" be thinking?
If anyone thinks that Al Gore would provide leadership that any sane person could respect, think again.

The bride, who is taking her husband's last name, wore a gown by Monique Lhuillier at the wedding, which took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Willie Nelson performed at the reception, according to a family friend who was there and described it as "a great party."

"As one person joked during the wedding toasts, global warming helped bring Sarah and Bill together," the family friend tells PEOPLE.
The Gore family hosted a rehearsal dinner for 75 family and friends the previous evening at Beverly Hills' Crustacean restaurant, a longtime favorite of the Gores.

I was watching a mexican doing a lawn today, and was struck by the thought that he probably has no idea why we would even WANT our lawns done. Probably thinks it’s stupid. Same with the cleanliness. Hint: THey have no landfills in Mexico.
