Reid Threatens to Keep Senate Up All Night, Republicans Yawn

Monday , July 16, 2007 By Major Garrett and Trish Turner

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has threatened to keep the Senate awake all night Tuesday to protest GOP blocking tactics on moves to compel U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq.

Senate Republican leaders, alerted to Reid's plans on Monday, said they have the votes to keep the president's surge policy in place, at least for now, and called Reid's up-all-night gambit a stunt that wouldn't change any minds.

Senior Democratic leadershp aides said that Reid was planning a Tuesday all-nighter — complete with roll-away beds — to draw public attention to GOP demands that any changes to Iraq policy carry a 60-vote majority.

"Is this a publicity stunt? Yes," a senior Democratic aide told FOX News. "This is the only way we know to highlight their complete ignorance of the will of the people!"

Republicans said they've applied that standard for months on Iraq policy changes and aren't about the change now, especially when recent GOP defections have given Democrats bipartisan majorities on troop drawdowns and other policy changes.

I think the "will of the people" might be shifting, without the RATS knowing about it. That's the problem with always keeping your finger to the wind. It gets numb after awhile.

The Democrats were the one who proclaimed the 60 vote rule in the last Congress. Let them live with it.

Harry, are you ready to accept responsibility to what happens to the peoples of Iraq who just want to live in peace if we abandon them?

Every time the Democrats don't get their way they stamp their foot and whine "Will of the people!"

Please. Wake me when the "will of the people" to retreat from Iraq shuts down the Senate phone system.

Up all night!! The horrors!

I think that it would be good if they were up all night, after all the troops are up all night every night!

"This is the only way we know to highlight their complete ignorance of the will of the people!"

The will of the people spoke on November 2004 during the last official poll of the war and the Commander in Chief. Bush won that poll by almost 4 million yeas!

He’s already told us that, if we withdraw from Iraq, Bush is still responsible for whatever happens there. And, you can bet that the MSM will agree with him should that happen.

As the surge takes hold, public opinion will swing back in favor of the war. Then the Democrats are going to be truly out of luck, having placed all their eggs in the basket of an American defeat.

If the ‘Rats were abusing the supermajority requirements to block judges last year, I can’t get too upset if the ‘Pubbies are using that same requirement for legitimate purposes today.

So these A-Holes vote to wait to hear the General's assessment in September, only to have them pull a stunt like this in July. Graham was right on Timmy's show. Wait until we hear from the General.

Why can't all these do nothing A-Holes, (including pubbies and Rats) do something for a change, like coming up with a plan to build a border fence that won't cost billions and untold billions of dollars.

BTW, I'd love to have our guys take the month of August off, for some R&R; maintenance; human and vehicle target practice along the Iranian and Syrian borders: Show the vacationing Iraq "government" what a hellhole their country will become without our daily presence in the middle of their cities.

Nope. A no-vote is the same thing as a “Nay”. That means it’s the “Yeas” that have to stay if they want to break the filibuster. The Dems pulled this on us last go-round.

Exactly. If we were as “against” the War in Iraq as Harry Reid thinks, we would be burning up the phone lines like we did on the Amnesty bill.

Come to think of it...where was Harry Reid’s love for the will of the people when THAT was going on? Oh yeah, I forgot - he was on TV calling us racist isolationists...

Yep. And we pull troops now starting this fall as the rats intend and our enemies will certainly cause another repeat of what happened when we pulled out of Vietnam. The death toll was another 1 million+ in two years when the North over-ran the South compared with the 1 million+ who died in the entire conflict period from 1967 to 1973.

When we pull troops out, I forsee a drawdown to 50,000 troops in late spring 2008 just in time for our fearless leaders to win votes for the November election. I don’t see all the troops leaving Iraq this decade or perhaps even the next one for that matter. Of course, we could avoid much of this by squashing Iran now before they have an entire nuke arsenal but I don’t think we will see that happen now.

Reid is working OT to try and get the President to surrender because if the ‘08 defense appropriations without surrender amendments gets passed then President Bush has free reign at Iraq through the duration of his term. Reid's only hope now is there is enough to prevent a filibuster and enough to override a veto.

Of course the Yea votes will be allowed to leave only the Ney’s will have to stay.

Why?..... Nothing happens as a rule within the Senate without unanimous consent. Thus no spur of the moment votes will occur, etc. Basically all the GOP has to do is keep one person on the floor to object. Now there maybe periodic quorum calls which the Senators of both stripes can be forced to come forward.
