Mom's Boyfriend Charged
CINCINNATI -- A judge ruled that a teenager will be tried as an adult for the death of an 18-month-old boy whose mother testified that he was repeatedly swung like a bat against the wall when the teen became frustrated during toilet training.
Derris Smith, 18, the mother's live-in boyfriend, has been charged with murder. He was 17 on June 27, when, police said, he delivered the beating that led to Malakai Glenn's death four days later.
The impact of the child hitting the wall left drywall stuck to his head and cracked a wooden door, said the boy's mother Sasha Glenn, 20, who cried often during her testimony Wednesday.
"When I picked him up he put his arms around me," Glenn said. "He was staring at me for a minute with big eyes, then he went limp." The child never regained consciousness and died after being hospitalized at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
Following the Wednesday hearing, Hamilton County Juvenile Court Judge Thomas Lipps said Smith should be tried as adult. The case will now go to a grand jury.
During the court hearing, Smith and his parents, who sat by their son, also cried.
Glenn said the ordeal began when Smith put the toddler on a child's toilet that was in the room where the three were sharing a bed and the couple went to sleep. She said Smith became angry when he saw the child resting his head on a pillow that she had placed on a stool in front of the toilet.
When Glenn said the boy had had enough, Smith told her, "Don't tell me what to do," she testified. "He picked him up and hit his head on the wall" before dropping him on the bed.
The couple tried to get the child to drink water and put him in the shower before calling 911.
Glenn said she had initially told police her son fell down stairs because she didn't want Smith to get in trouble, but changed her story when the child didn't recover.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said it has not been determined whether Glenn will be charged in connection with the death.
According to testimony, Glenn is pregnant with Smith's child, and Malakai Glenn was not his son.
Smith is being held in the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center on $500,000 bond.

Horrible! It seems there are a lot of these cases. The mother has kids from a previous relationships, the boyfriend then lives with her and/or watches the kids, he gets angry at one of the kids (who he doesn’t really care about anyway because the kid isn’t is), he beats the kid, and the kid winds up dying.
It might seem cruel to say, but many of these women could avoid this type of scenario if they wouldn’t sleep around and would marry one, decent guy who wants to be a good father and provider to his family.
Presume the biological mother is getting off as a result of her testimony.

What’s the problem? He’s jus keepin’ it real. That is what the boy-friend’s culture tells him he is to do, above all—keep it real.

There are so many things wrong with this story.
An 18 yo mom w/ an 19mo child. A 17 yo live in boyfriend beating his girlfriends son to death. And the mom is prgnant with this scumbags son. And an 18 mo kid basically screwed from birth, who was probably just beginning to comprehend what a toilet is, just beginning to understand the world, and he is killed by his own father.

How long had the little one been sitting on the potty before they put their little head on the pillow? My God. These types of crimes just go on , and on, and on. It makes me sick. Where, are we as a society, and nation headed?
This is almost becoming common place. Some such horrendous chit seems to happen daily. It makes me sick. And it makes me oh so wistful for the days before this chit took root. The days before greed, decadence, and self worship overtook our society. Where have those days gone? And when did they leave?

What you say is borne out in nature. Across many species, when a male joins a female who has recently birthed, the male will almost always kill the offspring.
The purpose is to stop lactation and drive the female back into heat, as well as preserving the male's own genes.
However, I think this guy was an abused child with pent up anger issues. He was destine for jail one way or the other. The unfortunate victim just happened to be in his way first.

Could you ever come close to this? Honestly, you’ll be surprised just how angry one can get at a small child (I was and still am on occasion, frankly) but it will scare you badly enough that you will never let it go unchecked.
And yes, pray every day. As long as you never think you’re a good enough parent, you’ll be a great one.

First, congratulations on being an expectant new father.
I was severely physically abused by my stepfather as a child and always worried that I would do the same to my children. I had always heard that abused kids grew up to abuse their own children.
I have 3 grown kids and never once did I abuse them. Many, many times I was so angry at them I could spit....at those times I would remove myself from the situation and go to a quiet place to calm down. Once in control of my temper I could then go deal with the misbehaving child. That and ALOT of prayer always worked for me.

This happens more often than not. I work with abused children/infants...and Mom's boyfriend is almost always the culprit. Mom goes back to the b/f afterward (most times) ...and will risk having the child taken away by CPS because of it. :-(

that reads sad as though the person has/had an issue with the child in the first place. reads more, as you reword it, that a alcholic would say about not touching a bottle, drug addict etc. maybe thats just me reading it incorrectly.
i would think a person wakes up thinking loving and greatful thoughts about your child.

Nope. The murdered child came from (what the media loves to call) "a previous relationship."
I remember how mad I'd get at my dog when he misbehaved, never hurt him, but a lot of screaming and yelling. I know enough to know that my child is going to test my patience to the limit. But I will walk out that door before I ever think about actually hurting him. And yes, I will be praying a lot more I'm sure.
