Warsaw - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is sticking to her country's tradition of trying to control Europe, but is "smarter" about it than Adolf Hitler, a controversial far-right Polish lawmaker said on Wednesday.
Maciej Giertych, a member of the European Parliament who has a reputation for anti-Semitism and homophobia, said in an interview that Merkel was simply the latest in a line of German leaders whose goal was to "dominate" the continent.
In an interview published in the daily Zycie Warszawy, Giertych said Merkel was upholding a tradition dating back to the Ottonian dynasty of Germanic monarchs of the 10th and 11th century, and exemplified more recently by the Nazis.
"Hitler also wanted to create a superpower. Angela Merkel is doing something similar, but she's much smarter about it," Giertych was quoted as saying.
Anti-Semitic and homophobic tracts
"She doesn't use the argument of force. She makes what appear to be concessions, but in truth her concern is to ensure that Germany is as strong as possible," he said.
"Today, it's clear that Europe is dominated by Germany."
Earlier this year, Giertych got into trouble for publishing anti-Semitic and homophobic tracts bearing the logo of the European Parliament.
He has also argued against Darwinism, claiming evolution is disproved by the existence of the Loch Ness monster.
Reacting to his latest remarks, former Polish foreign minister and present-day MEP Dariusz Rosati said: "Mr. Giertych is in serious need of medical care."
Giertych, 71, is the father of Roman Giertych, Poland's education minister and deputy premier.
While both are the masterminds of the far-right League of Polish Families - led by 36-year-old Roman - Giertych senior sits as a non-affiliated MEP.
His father Jedrzej Giertych, one of the founders of Poland's pre-World War II extreme right party, was known for anti-German, anti-Semitic and pro-Russian viewpoints.
Anti-Semites are on the political LEFT. As with Hitler and his Mohammadan brothers.
A GOOD QUOTE FOR HARRY rEID, “ tHIS MAN NEEDS MEDICAL CARE.”HA.
“He has also argued against Darwinism, claiming evolution is disproved by the existence of the Loch Ness monster.”
That’s a new one! LOL
It’s a cheap shot. Merkel seems like a good person.
Polish leftists (former corrupt Kwasniewsi's governement, all commie turncoats who robbed the country for decades and now enjoy high governrment pensions (currently out of power and angry) demonize this guy, he is against special rights for homos, against rewriting history by Socialist-Nazi EU, (EU wants to write their version of history to be taught in schools in all EU countries).
Giertych is against EU attempts to wipe out former pacts protecting Polands sovereignity from Germany's attempts to resettle and subdue western part of Poland with EU blessing.
Giertych is a patriot and true conservative.
Adolf seemed to be a good person too
He did not smoke, loved children and didn't even eat animals!
LOL
This Poland/Germany feuding and the much longer Serbia/Kosovo-Albania (boy, that's bound to rile a few) one on FR are so (see too) much.
Interestingly, for the large (most) part, German freepers have the sense to not rise to the bait, and there are either no or very few Albanian freepers.
Germany controlling Europe is not a bad thing.
Merkel can’t even dominate Germany, much less the rest of Europe.
IOW, she's a very good leader for Germany on the international relations front. We could use someone like that.
