Burj Dubai skyscraper soars into record books
ArabianBusiness.com ^ | July 19, 2007 | David Westley

Posted on 07/20/2007 11:45:40 AM PDT by Squidpup

The Burj Dubai is set to become the tallest building in the world, with some unofficial reports claiming the building overtook the Taipei 101 on Wednesday, and others that an official announcement will be made on Saturday.

Property developers Emaar are being tight lipped on the rumours and would not confirm the stories yesterday, but if confirmed, Dubai's latest icon must now be taller than 509 metres (1,671 feet), the height of Taiwan's Taipei 101.

Burj Dubai will eventually hold the record in all four categories as recognised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, have the highest publicly accessible observation deck, and the world's fastest lift, which will shoot along at 65km/hour (40mph).

Until Emaar's official statement - expected shortly - there is still some confusion as to which record will have been broken however, with the Sears Tower, Ostankino Tower and CN Tower potentially still claiming to be tallest under various definitions of a ‘building' and ‘tower'.

What is clear is the building itself, which is now visible from across the city of Dubai, and upon completion will be possible to see from 90km away. The last official statement was released on July 15th when the tower's height was reported to be 507.3 metres (1,664.4 feet), totalling 140 completed floors.

That suggests Burj Dubai has surpassed the Petronas Twin Towers, presently the second-tallest building in the world at 452 metres (1,483 feet).

In February 2007, the Burj Dubai surpassed the Sears Tower as the building with the most floors.

The Burj Dubai is to be the centerpiece of a city within a city. The development as a whole will include 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 6.2 acres of parkland, 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, and a 30 acre man-made lake. The development will cost about $20 billion.

When Emaar does make its announcement, the Burj Dubai will still not, officially, be able to take the mantle as the world's tallest building. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat will not recognise its world-record height until it is completed.

Present records

* Building with most floors: 140 (previously World Trade Center - 110)

* Tallest skyscraper to highest occupied floor: 507.3 m (1,664.4 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)

* Tallest skyscraper to top of roof: 507.3 m (1,664.4 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)

* Vertical concrete pumping (for a building): 507.3 m (1,664.4 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)

Judging by the amount of concrete in these thing, I doubt even a 747 impact could do a lot of damage, except maybe at the very top, thinnest part of the building. Even then, it has a MASSIVE poured concrete core with a crapload of rebar. Think nuclear reactor containment type construction.

I have a relative who is more than a little bit crazy. She had been telling us for some time before 9/11 that she always felt that skyscrapers were unsafe and might fall down. I would always reassure her that they were engineered to make this virtually impossible. But it turned out she was right.

Designed by the same firm,SOM. But by the Chicago office, not the NYC office.

And I agree. The Freedom Tower sucks, this building is amazing.

If there was ever a made-to-order application for a suitcase nuke (at about the 20th floor; near supporting beams), this is it.

Adrian Smith explained the concept of this (his design)project over dinner using wine and condiment bottles of varying sizes.

he explained that the engineering used in building skyscrapers is so young that it will continue to grow exponentially in the near future.

the various sized buildings clustered together breaks the stress force of the wind

.

Looks like Dubai is really trying to recreate the Manhattan skyline. It looks like they have a “downtown” and a “midtown” with a break in the middle a la Greenwich Village, I’m guessing. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

It amazes me that a city based in such a backwards culture can appear so modern.

A western-looking Muslim country that is running out of oil builds a tower with a target on it. ???

Who are all the clients in the building, anyway?

I wouldn't want to be the insurer; however, it is one way to keep the oil money if one chooses not to rebuild.

Didn’t put my fist through the screen. It’s nice that someone recognizes one of the greatest masterpieces of engineering for it’s time. It’s also nice to see someone use an image of the World Trade Center prior to the terrorist attack upon it, rather than, oh, say CNN not really having any images of it pre-attack left on their website.

Nice pics....reminds me of the the old Hong Kong days in the 80s

I remember when my old bank was building (Hong Kong-Shanghai) there on HKI and it was such a neat building for 1985 or so....

Dubai is really throwing them up....very remarkable just sprouting up from desolation

I said after 9’11.. we need to rebuilt, this time higher, and put in serious safety measures. Even if they sat empty the symbolism is important.

Of course in dubai they can actually build things, one average building here probably costs more then their mega skycraper.. and even if we had the money it would take many years in the regulatory process.
