Shays screams at Capitol Police officer, later apologies
Politico ^ | July 20, 2007

Posted on 07/20/2007 2:26:11 PM PDT by james500

On Thursday afternoon, Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) got into a loud, angry dispute with a U.S. Capitol Police officer at the security checkpoint inside the entrance of the West Side of the Capitol. On Friday, Shays, a veteran lawmaker, offered a public apology for the incident, and said that he wants to meet with the officer personally to reiterate how sorry he is.

Shays reportedly grabbed the officer during the dispute over whether the officer should allow a group of tourists to enter the building, said several sources. Tourists are not allowed to use the West Front entrance, but Shays was trying to bring the group through that entrance anyway. The officer refused to allow them to come inside, and Shays then "yelled and screamed" at the officer, including using profanity, the sources said. It is unclear whether Shays actually touched the officer.

During my 19 years in Congress I have grown to respect and appreciate the difficult mission performed by the men and women of the United States Capitol Police every day.

Yeah, you sure know how to show that "respect".

Liar.

Well Shays is essentially a Democrat already, so this is typical behavior......

But watch how he will probably be treated much more harshly by the MSM than was Cynthia Moonbat since he does have that “R” after his name.

Ages ago, I saw one critter throw a fit at the airline counter because there weren’t any first class seats left for him to fly home on.

Rather amazing to watch the attitude that it was due to him, regardless if someone else got bumped.

“Typical Congresscritter arrogance. Such a bunch of primadonnas.”

I would like to remind all the congressionals that it’s the taxpayers who pay for those buildings and it’s the taxpayers who fund their salaries. Tourists, for crying out loud, ought at least to be able to get into the building.

This is the summer vacation and lots of moms and dads are busy bringing their children to the nation’s capitol and Shays’ tirade is a despicable behavior for the children to see from a congressional.

He ought to be ashamed. And he ought, also, to apologize to the American people because of his arrogant attitude that he actually believes that the Capitol is his building.

Kinda obvious isn’t it?

The Sen. Shay went to the officer personally to reiterate how sorry he was and that he was out of line.

He didn’t run to the media yelling hate crime.

"What a creep."

Maybe so but he was the only Republican to get re-elected in Connecticut.
He was expected to lose.

I do have some respect for Shays's after he stood up to the Dem's, here is a blast from the past.

HARTFORD, Conn. - Republican Rep. Christopher Shays defended the House speaker's handling of a congressional page scandal, saying no one died like at Chappaquiddick in 1969 when Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy was involved.

"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," the embattled Connecticut congressman told The Hartford Courant in remarks published Wednesday.

"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.

Shays’ statement: (Wow, what a weasel. Get a load of the last line.)

“Yesterday while trying to locate a family of constituents caught on the West Front of the Capitol during a rain storm, I interacted with a Capitol Police officer in a way I know was not appropriate.

“Although my focus was in trying to locate my constituents and get them to a dry location, I know I clearly could have handled the situation with the officer in a more professional and respectful way, and I regret I did not do so.

“During my 19 years in Congress I have grown to respect and appreciate the difficult mission performed by the men and women of the United States Capitol Police every day. They ensure members of Congress can conduct the people’s business in the safest environment possible while also attending to the needs of the millions of people who visit our nation’s Capitol every year. They deserve all of our respect and admiration and I apologize that even for a few moments my behavior did not reflect my appreciation of that fact.

“When I return to Washington on Monday, I hope to have the opportunity to meet with the officer and apologize to him in person. I take full responsibility for this incident and want to ensure it does not reflect negatively on the officer in any way.”

19 years in congress. Well you know what they say: familiarity breeds contempt.

Another reason for term limits. Do you ever watch C-Span II when the well is full of senators?

I look at those people milling around and feel such a sense of hopelessness for this country's future. I'm sure Brian Lamb never intended to host such a soap opera. Maybe this time around we can vote some of them off the island.

Years ago I worked for a congresscritter (later investigated, found guilty, jailed, and now has his law license back and is working as a lobbyist, but I digress) who, when he flew in, would only fly into Miami International Airport (over an hours drive away). He lived 10 minutes from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport which was a lot less crowded, but he liked flying into MIA because on those rare occasions he drove himself home, they had a special VIP lot really close to the gates.

Most of the times I had to pick him up (late at night). He would not walk the distance to even the VIP lot if I were there. No, I had to pick him up curbside. To make matters even more interesting, I had to personally meet him at the gate. So I had to leave my car parked - illegally - curbside and run to the gate to meet him. If his flight was delayed, I would spend the time running between the gate and the curb so that they wouldn’t tow my car.

They really don’t think that the rules apply to them...

Wait just a minute, people. Shays is a mild-mannered guy. I know from personal experience that Capitol Hill security officers can be jerks. Isn’t it possible that there’s as much blame on the part of the officer as on the part of Mr. Shays? Let’s not assume the worst just because he’s a RINO. In addition, he is apologizing and taking this seriously. This is not the normal procedure for Rats. One can also assume that Shays will be punished more seriously, in one way or another, than that subhuman bytch McKinney was.

Translation: Some lobbyist friends who give me money were getting pissy because they had to pass through metal detectors and I wanted to speed them through so they would open their checkbooks faster.

Alternatively, I wonder if he is questioned by a GJ or a the police whether his story about trying to locate constituents will continue.

Oh BS. I know from personal experience that a high percentage of these officers are prior military. I served with a guy whose son was honorably discharged from the Army after service in Iraq who is now a Capitol Hill cop. Shays should have been kicked in the throat, handcuffed and carted off to the gray bar hotel for his actions.

No professional would kick someone in the throat just for screaming (if that’s really what he did). Listen, bud, for the purposes of this immediate issue, I don’t care if “a high percentage are prior military.” That doesn’t inoculate them against the possibility of becoming arrogant jerks. I’ve been there and I’ve seen it. The fact that you’ve seen something else doesn’t impress me. And I never said that MOST Hill security are arrogant jerks. Probably most are not. I said they CAN BE, meaning that at least a few sometimes are. The inability of FReepers to read anything more complicated than three-word sentences is their problem, not mine.

And what the hell is the “gray bar hotel”? It sounds pretty sinister. Are you trying to make jail sound even worse than it is? Seems to me you have an appetite for violence against anyone who offends a cop. Well, I don’t. I like to look at things case by case.

I think you people are displacing your (legitimate) anger on weaklings, like RINOS, instead of our true and truly powerful enemies, the Rats. At worst, Shays is just another arrogant congressman. This is hardly the worst case of congressional arrogance I’ve seen, and I suspect it’s overblown. We don’t believe the liberal media — unless a RINO is the target? Give me a break.

Your stupidity and meanness are fine examples of why the liberals have so many excuses to portray conservatives as Neanderthals. Every now and then, they’re actually right.

"No professional would kick someone in the throat just for screaming (if that’s really what he did)."

You're right you'd kick them in the throat if they put their hands on you while you were doing your job trying to protect their pansy ass. As for having an appetite for violence, just what do you think cops should do when violence is directed towards them? I'm glad weak kneed men such as yourself will never have the privilege of serving alongside brave men who are charged with securing our nation's capitol. In a post 911 world America needs men who at times act like Neanderthals in the defense of their country. Those are the men you call when pantywaists like yourself cower in the face of the enemy.
