Bush: Americans will realize need for aliens
The Washington Times ^ | July 20, 2007 | Stephen Dinan

President Bush yesterday said Americans will soon realize they need the immigrants and foreign temporary workers that would have been allowed by his immigration bill, which was defeated in the Senate last month.

Mr. Bush, in a town hall session in Nashville, Tenn., also refused to say whether he will pardon two U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug-smuggling suspect, saying the prosecutor was a friend of his who made his case to the jury that convicted the agents.

If Mr. Bush was hoping the immigration issue would disappear after his bill's failure, those hopes were dashed, as he was asked repeatedly about border security during the forum — meant to highlight his commitment to cutting the deficit.

"The bill failed and I can't make a prediction to you at this point, sir, where it's going to head," the president told one questioner. "I can make you a prediction, though, that pretty shortly people are going to be knocking on people's doors saying, man, we're running out of workers."

Mr. Bush said there are workers who will do jobs Americans aren't doing in the agriculture sector in particular, and without them the jobs will go unfilled.

After hearing Bush in TN on illegals and the border patrol agents, I am about ready to join the Dems and impeach him. It seems obvious from the fact he and the prosecutor are such close friends; by the fact that a Bush appointee judged their case; by the suppression of a great deal of evidence; by the fact that the drug runner was later apprehended again, violating his immunity--Bush made a showcase of this to show his grerat friends in the Mexican govt. that he would make good his promises to them to help their illegals.

Disgusting!

The only thing I am still with Bush on is Iraq, and there even, great mistakes have been made in the PC rules of engagement.

Sorry. I’m too busy thanking a Mexican for showing up at my small town’s Fourth of July carnival for wearing a Mexican soccer jersey.

Maybe tomorrow I will thank him for the cereal and the hamburger.

If you ate Food today, Thank a Mexican.

Right, because Americans are too stupid to figure out how to feed people.

Get real.

The Nile is a River that runs through FR. All the Border Guards pretend the crops will just plant and harvest themselves.

He's right and he’s wrong. We need immigrants and we need more citizens or our social security system will collapse. However, his bill was not the answer.

As someone who has paid tens of thousands of dollars into Social Security, I would love to see it collapse completely. And I wouldn't even want a refund. I wish the government, right now today, would stop cutting social security checks and stop taking social security out of paychecks. And I honestly don't care if you are 55 years old and have paid into the system for the last 40 years. Tough luck. Just end it.

To keep this country going we have to have a certain amount of immigration. But, I beg, this immigration must be legal. Otherwise, we will become Mexico north or, even worse, Iran West.

I love our President and support his WOT and economic plans 100% but I disagree with his stand on immigration.
The problem with labor/workers/productivity in America is government. Government builds too many bird feeders. Government and the courts overregulate and interferes too much with free trade and commerce. What business does government have in setting wages via federal minimum wage laws? In addition, government funds inefficiency - classic case is funding of most government agencies - and financially supports inefficient and ineffective institutions - universities - by underwriting loans, etc.
It’s not that we don’t have workers but for many otherwise available workers, living off government largess is more desirable.

I think you're right, TT. We do need some unskilled workers in this country; it is the "curse", I guess, of an educated citizenry.

I just wish the conservatives would move on: Bush knows he lost, and though he had a point to make, he should have put border security first.

The War on Terror, tax cuts, a conservative judiciary and the protection of innocent life are things most conservatives can agree with the President on...perhaps we can focus on those things now.

The Nile is a River that runs through FR. All the Border Guards pretend the crops will just plant and harvest themselves.

Paying illegals 3.85/hour is pretty much planting and harvesting the crops themselves.

You should be a slavery advocate. At least you'd be honest with yourself and other FReepers.
