Some Let Down After Edwards Stop In East Arkansas

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards included Helena-West Helena in his recent eight-state tour focusing on poverty issues. But local leaders feel somewhat slighted. Mayor James Valley says Edwards' brief visit was disappointing. Valley says he had wanted to hear more about what Edwards envisioned for east Arkansas, and he had hoped to pitch to the former senator from North Carolina reasons why there should be more development in the state's struggling Delta region.

The Reverend Julious McGruder of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church said he was glad to have the chance to see a presidential candidate, but said he thinks Edwards missed an opportunity to learn about the area. McGruder says many of the local leaders felt slighted.

During his visit, Edwards talked with a group of home-health care workers. He offered his support for a hike in the minimum wage, universal health care, and paid leave for workers.

The problem in East Arkansas is a high rate of unemployment. Edwards would only cause more unemployment.

Hey, if he built another McMansion there; it’d employ 200 construction workers, 20 servants, an oncologist and 15 local hairdressing & spa personnel.

Why aren’t the gods of Arkansas (billy-jeff and satanica ‘toon) living in their HOME STATE and improving the way of life in the State that launched their careers? Oh yeah... I forgot... they are now carpetbaggers in NY.

Most likely, to see real poverty you have to go to another continent.

If he just bought some land and clearcut it he would employ some folks for a while.

Yeah, our “poor” people have: cars, houses, televisions, computers, microwave ovens, cable or satellite TV, dishwashers, trendy name-brand clothing & footwear, etc.. They are by far the richest and fattest “poor” in the history of the world!!

Is Edwards running for Governor of Arkansas?

That's the only reason there would be for him to be having visions about the development of east Arkansas.
