Mysterious Clouds Creeping Out of the Arctic
LiveScience.com ^ | 28 June 2007 | Dave Mosher

Posted on 07/23/2007 6:29:00 PM PDT by Lusis

new NASA satellite has recorded the first detailed images from space of a mysterious type of cloud called “night-shining” or “noctilucent." The clouds are on the move, brightening and creeping out of polar regions, and researchers don't know why.

Of course, they're not sure why it's happening, but of course, at the same time they blame global warming.

I have an old Golden Guide of Weather that mentions noctilucent clouds, so they are not new at all.

But they must be caused by Global Warming and will melt Greenland and drown the polar bears. Unless we embrace global socialism immediately, of course.

Related????

And every year, they pollute the rest of us.

Excerpt:

China - April 6 and 7 - A series of huge sandstorm events called "the worst of the spring season" develop over Mongolia and sweep across western China reducing visibilities to near zero and making ground transportation all but impossible. The resulting huge aerosol cloud mass is picked up by orbiting earth satellites as it forms over China and heads out to sea.

(snip)

This Asian Haze event has been officially confirmed by:

* Jay R. Herman, Principal Investigator for TOMS Aerosol/UV projects, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
* Officials at the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, California
* Gene Feldman, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
* Russ Schnell, Director of Observatory Operations, NOAA, Boulder, Co.

On April 6 and 7, a series of huge sandstorm events developed over Mongolia and swept across western China and subsequently produced a huge aerosol cloud that was observed by orbiting earth satellites.

Dangerous Levels of Metallic Substances detected in latest 'yellow dust' from China
[Mar. 10, 2001]

"The latest seasonal winds from China, known as "yellow dust," which blanketed the nation earlier this week twice, carried 16 times more metallic substances than last year's, a research institute said yesterday, sounding health alarms over the dust mass.

There are no immediate measures to prevent the coming of the so-called "gatecrasher of spring" that causes eye, nose and respiratory illnesses. Experts say that it is best to remain indoors and if one has to go out, to wear a mask.

The yellow dust phenomenon happens after sandstorms are created in the inland deserts in northern China, usually during dry spring weather, by strong convection of currents of warm and cold air that sweeps soil particles up to high altitudes.

They typically rise to a height of 3 km to 5 km before blowing eastward at some 30 meters per second, crossing the West Sea before arriving in South Korea in two to three days.

In addition to potential health problems, the dust in extreme cases can cause visibility problems for pilots, hinder the operation of precision machinery and impair the growth of agricultural products.

There were reports the dust may have carried the viruses that caused a deadly foot-and-mouth epidemic that hit the nation's livestock industry last year.

NASA sets up it's own annual tracking of this mysterious dust cloud event:

From NASA

Background about the China Dust Storm

A Siberian cold front caused large dust storms to be created in northwestern China's Inner Mongolia region and Gansu province. As these storms hovered over northern China, they ushered in the worst period of air pollution in six years. Air quality in the capital city of Beijing reached hazardous levels, and elderly people and children were warned to stay indoors. At this latitude on the globe the air moves from west to east, so the dust storm which originated in China will move towards Japan. However, the storm is expected to weaken as it enters the Bohai Sea and the East China Sea. South Korea, which also lies in the storm's path, was also greatly affected, and the storm was its second-worst this year. The dust is actually a combination of sand from the Gobi Desert and chemicals from Chinese industrial cities that blow to the Korean Peninsula from westerly winds in April and May, reducing visibility and filling the country's skies with a thick blanket.

They are the cooling clouds that help balance out the global warming that supposedly causes the polar regions to melt. It is it natural occurrence which humans have not yet witnessed. (Hey, it’s as good as any other explanation I’ve heard)

I lived about 4 houses away. I will freely admit, I did look over my shoulder a few times.
Seeing the movie now, its almost comical.

Notice that the choice of the word "warning" betrays the assumption that it's something bad, not something good, that is going to happen.

"Of course, they're not sure why it's happening,"

They know. It's due to water vapor from jet exhaust being deposited in the stratosphere. It has nothing to do with GW. Normally water would freeze out before it gets there. Those are ice crystals that see the sun all the time, because they are so high up. The shining is simply refraction of sunlight back down to where it's otherwise dark.

I'm sorry, this is just alarmist B.S. written by somebody who knows nothing about meteorology.

When I was studying for my private pilot license as a teenager, back in the early 70s, we learned about noctilucent clouds. They were considered an interesting but harmless phenomenon. I think they've been observed since the 19th century.

Noctilucent clouds are nickle dust particles (possibly from meteorites) covered with ice; they are seen primarily during late summer at higher latitudes...

http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF6/676.html

Alaska Science Forum
August 16, 1984

It’s Time Again for Noctilucent Clouds
Article #676

EXCERPT:

Under an electron microscope, the surfaces on which the particles were captured revealed millions of minute motes of dust as small as 0.05 microns in diameter (a micron is one-thousandth of a millimeter; a millimeter is about half the thickness of pencil lead). Obviously, chemical analysis of samples so small is extremely difficult, but electron bombardment indicated that the particles contained nickel. Nickel is an element quite rare on earth, but common in meteorites. Hence, an extraterrestrial origin is suggested for the components of noctilucent clouds.

In addition, the collecting surfaces showed halos surrounding some particles. This implies that they originally had a coating of something that had evaporated between the time they were collected and the time they were observed in the laboratory. The coating must almost certainly have been water ice.

The picture which therefore emerges is that noctilucent clouds are meteor dust particles covered with ice. Knowing what they are, however, in no way explains why they behave as they do. It would be expected that meteoritic particles would be evenly distributed in the earth’s upper atmosphere. Why, then, are noctilucent displays localized; why do they occur only occasionally; why only during the summer months; and, why only at the higher latitudes? These questions about the rare and beautiful spectacle remain to be answered.

END EXCERPT

“I think they’ve been observed since the 19th century.”

Probably before that- the 19th was when someone wrote it down and it got reprinted. People in Norway and Canada and what’s now Alaska saw them long ago.

Completely natural and rather neat.

The alarmist probably knows lots of meteorology, but alarmism is more important.

I dunno, but the article says:

"They were first seen in 1885" about two years after the powerful eruption of Krakatoa in Indonesia, which hurled plumes of ash as high as 80 kilometers into Earth's atmosphere."

My vote goes to 1) VOLCANOS, and 2) CONTRAILS (water vapor).
We need both.
Leave them alone.
