Syria Occupies Lebanon. Again.

As of this minute, Syria occupies at least 177 square miles of Lebanese soil. That you are now reading about it for the first time is as much a scandal as the occupation itself.

The news comes by way of a fact-finding survey of the Lebanese-Syrian border just produced by the International Lebanese Committee for U.N. Security Council Resolution 1559, an American NGO that has consultative status with the U.N. Because of the sensitivity of the subject, the authors have requested anonymity and have circulated the report only among select government officials and journalists. But its findings cannot be ignored.

They could strike a useful blow by closing their embassies in Damascus until such time as Damascus opens an embassy--with all that it implies--in Beirut.

An excellent idea, actually. One waits with breath bated for the UN denunciation of the Syrian involvement in the assassination of Rafik Hariri. Trade sanctions. Stiffly-worded diplomatic notes. Throw us a bone here...

The Syrian buildup to a war with Israel is approaching the status of a slow-motion train wreck. Israel isn't going to occupy Damascus (and neither are we), they're going to flatten it, and the Iranians aren't going to help Assad with anything but fierce words and tearful lamentations. They do not want this fight despite Ahmadinejad whispering seductively to them that they do.

The only problem is Russia. Syria is one of their biggest butt-buddies.

Oh yeah. They still think they’re in charge. It’s a fond illusion, broken frequently by gunfire in that part of the world.

Yeah, Moscow has a lot of ties, particularly military, with Damascus, but they aren’t going to do anything about it if Israel invades. I have to admit I’m surprised the Syrians are trying to force an issue. There are walking on eggshells as it is.

It’s interesting because on Sunday night, there was this great show on PBS about the 6 day war. The film footage was amazing.

I wouldn’t count out the Russians. During the 1967 war, Russia moved naval ships off of Haifa and was getting ready to attack Israel as it got within 40 miles of Damascus. The russians had also flown a bunch of bombers and fighters to Armenia and was painting them with Egpytian and Syrian markings. They were going to attack Israel and make it look like it was Egpytians and Syrians that were flying the planes.

Let’s see, when Israel got out of southern Lebanon in 2000, the Hezbos claimed that a single Israeli farm was on Lebanese land, and used that to justify continued attacks on Israel. It seems to me that Syria is occupying more land now than Israel allegedly did.

:’) And at one time Syria was occupying nearly the whole of Lebanon.
