Potential presidential candidate Fred Thompson drew some of the state's top Republicans to his first Alabama fundraiser, including the state chairman of John McCain's campaign.
State Attorney General Troy King, McCain's state chairman, attended the private fundraising reception Monday evening at the Mountain Brook home of construction company executive Jim Cooper.
Others in attendance included Secretary of State Beth Chapman, state Senate Minority Leader Jabo Waggoner, and state Rep. Jay Love.
King said he was invited to attend the $1,000-per-couple reception for free and he went because Thompson was born in Sheffield, Ala.
"As one of the top Republicans in the state, I wanted to welcome him back home," King said Tuesday.
The attorney general said he had followed Thompson's career as a U.S. senator from Tennessee and as an actor of the "Law and Order" TV show. But he said he has no plans to switch candidates.
"I committed to Sen. McCain. I gave him my word and I'm from a place where your word means something," King said in an interview.
Chapman said she also went as a nonpaying invited guest and is not getting involved in any presidential campaign because of her role in overseeing the state's presidential primary on Feb. 5. But she said people seemed to enjoy meeting Thompson in the casual setting.
"He was very down to earth. He could have been Fred Thompson from Greenville, Alabama, or Fred Thompson from Arab, Alabama," she said.
Chapman, who worked in lots of campaigns before winning the office of state auditor and then secretary of state, said she was impressed that about 150 people would attend the event that was quickly organized with little notice.
"That says people are still looking for their candidate," she said.
Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, agreed it "was a great turnout for someone who's not an announced candidate yet."
Waggoner, who was among those paying $1,000 per couple to attend, said he hasn't endorsed anyone yet, but "at this point, I'd probably lean toward Thompson."
Love, a member of the House Government Appropriations Committee, was also among those paying to attend. The Montgomery Republican said he plans to endorse Thompson if he enters the race. In Love's view, the leading GOP candidates each have a position on some major issue that he considers a "deal breaker."
Love predicted Thompson would not be at a disadvantage by getting in the race months after other candidates.
"Most people are still waiting and haven't pledged their support to one side or another," the state representative said.
"I committed to Sen. McCain. I gave him my word and I'm from a place where your word means something," King said in an interview.
Translation: Hurry up and drop out, John, so I can get on the winning team!
Translation: He is committed to building a McCain/Thompson ticket.
This is in referance to the fact that Thompson was born in Alabama.
Interesting that this guy knows this.
I don’t think that’s unusual...any chance a campaign operative can get an up close look at a competitor’s fundraising operations, it’s taken advantage of. He would have been a fool not to go. Any word on What FDT said?

McCain and Fred are friends, right?
Would you vote for a McCain/Fred ticket? Would that help McCain?

Thompson has said he will not take a VP slot, and why would he
accept a second slot to someone who is polling so far beneath him?
Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy are friends, too. Do you expect her to choose Teddy as her running mate?
And Hillary said she wasn’t running.
Where do Thompson votes land if he doesn’t run?
I just received an invitation to attend the Straight Talk Express luncheon hosted by McCain.
Do I really hafta tell ya’ if I’m gonna go?
BTW, FDT’s name was mentioned nowhere...only the RINO Gordon Smith.
IOW...there’s no support for a McCain/Thompson ticket.
He’s running...smartly, I might add.
Some would go to Congressman Duncan Hunter, some to Governor Mitt Romney, as I see it, but who knows? Kind of a moot point, since he’s running: The Thompson campaign already has a Virginia HQ and has taken a lease on a large former schoolhouse in Nashville, Tennessee. They’ve raised millions already, and will raise many more on the day he announces.
It should be obvious to anyone that McCain and Thompson are no longer friends. Fred’s impending candidacy has destroyed McCain’s last chance at getting nominated.
The fact that Fred Thompson endorsed McCain in 1999 after Lamar Alexander dropped out doesn’t have much relevance to today. That was largely before McCain went liberal.
Noone who is running for president ever says they are interested in the VP slot because it immediately diminishes their campaign.
Ugh. Don’t give her any ideas... :O
There is no earthly reason for Fred Thompson to take a VP slot.
He’ll be too old to be President in the future, and he only wants to be President to get things accomplished.
Nothing would help McCain. He's beyond help. He's an unhinged nut.
Haven't heard those words from a politician in a long time.
Wish he was on Fred's team.
Alabama Attorney General Troy King
There, that's pronounced "A' (the long "A" as in the first letter of the alphabet) rab". The accent is on the "A".
“Translation: He is committed to building a McCain/Thompson ticket.”
I remember right from the beginning that Fred Thompson stated he was NOT interested in a VP position, and that if he runs it would be for the TOP position. I hope and pray that if Fred wins the nomination that he does not choose McCain as his VP! I do not believe that McCain is well, and I wish he would retire and enjoy the remainder of his senior years.
I remember a stupid reporter asking him that question. His reply was the only reply one could give. No one would admit to running for VP.
he only wants to be President to get things accomplished.
Since he hasn't gotten anything accomplished ever to begin with - maybe a small bit roll in the nomination of Roberts - I don't think that's a priority for him.
“Where do Thompson votes land if he doesnt run?”
Mine stays home unless Hunter were to pull a miracle.
No more RINOs, period.
That said, I think there’s 0% chance of Thompson not running.
Uhmm. Maybe you should follow a conversation back to the original question before spouting your inanities.
You said it McCain is toast. Those who committed to him are now kicking themselves and looking for a way out.
