Tammy Faye Messner, Gay Icon
Slate ^ | July 23, 2007 | Michelle Tsai

By the time Tammy Faye Messner died Friday, the outspoken, fake-eyelash-donning 65-year-old had gone from Christian televangelist to reviled woman to gay icon. How did Messner become a gay icon?

With fabulousness and honesty. Tammy Faye's religious background made her an unlikely object for this kind of adulation, but in many ways she had the classic profile of a gay icon. Like many others, she became celebrated for her perseverance. She fell from grace (and lost much of her money) when it was discovered that her husband, Jim Bakker, had cheated on her and swindled their followers out of $158 million. But Tammy Faye talked openly about her pain on TV and stood by her man after his conviction, singing at a press conference, "On Christ the solid rock I stand/ All other ground is sinking sand." Her refusal to change her unique style—runny mascara, gawdy jewelry, and all—also made her icon-worthy.

I thought exactly the same thing. She was very classy.

The reason she is a gay icon is due to her deep friendship with Jim J Bullock.

Keep your eyes on Jesus, not humans. They will fail you every time.

I’ll bet she’s spinning in her grave knowing she’s an icon for assbanditos.

I would have thought that, too, but I check out the DUmmies board about every other day. Every time someone there would spew venom on her (remembering only the PTL days) someone else would come to her defense, based mainly on her mutual embrace of the gay community.

That’s true. Judy Garland comes to mind. Maybe because they are ultimately self-destructive themselves.

A phrase from a Gettysburg monument comes to mind (was just there last week on vacation):

We have faith in God, but we kept our powder dry.

This woman is the personification of why I feel this way about any Church. One of many actually.....

I used to feel that way too.....until I realized that church wasn't about getting what "I" need or want...but a place where I could give to others......whether it be prayer, ministering or comfort.

I am wary of judging people's hearts by the way their outside looks. Some of the most godly people I know....sport leather, tattoos and drive harley's. My take on Tammy Faye and Jan Crouch with all their makeup...is that they never came out of the 60's. Everyone wore the eyelashes, big hair and gawdy stuff back then. Some recovered, some didn't. :)

And Jim Bakker was "on the down low" as well.

Pretty clear that neither of you have read the story at the link provided in this thread. Nice picture of Tammy Faye at the gay film festival Outfest. A quote from her interview with Larry King is in order: “When I went — when we lost everything, it was the gay people that came to my rescue, and I will always love them for that.”

How do you know that? Judging her from her outward appearance doesn’t mean you know her heart. That’s the trouble with Christians. We LOVE to judge other Christians, to our shame and God is NOT happy with us when we do that. We should have been praying for her and encouraging her growth. Not ONE of us is perfect. How may AIDS patients have you or even I visited?

He probably said, Well done, thou good and faithful servant. HE knew her heart. YOU do not.

I think that making her an icon is a way to stick their finger in the eye of Christians.

If one person can come to Christ through making her an icon, then I'll volunteer to be the Christian that has their eye poked.

I’m sure many Christians were overjoyed at her fall from grace. How many came to her and embraced her and tried to help her? Gays are humans too and many of them are truly good people. I hate their lifestyle but I love them. God does no less...

You think there’s a problem with that? I gotta say, you’re pretty twisted and not very Christian if so.

‘we kept our powder dry but our mascara was very wet!’

With tears of ‘joy’ of course....(chuckle)

They lost me when I learned they had a dog house fur lined and air conditioned...and I love dogs.

Well, when the "Christian" that you are directing your comment to learned that she did that, he reaction was to say "BARF".

Sometimes I wonder whether so many "Christians" in America know anything about the actual life of Jesus, rather than the judgmental, sometimes hateful, propaganda they are spoon fed.
