UNFATHOMABLE (Connecticut home invasion robbery/murders)
The Hartford Courant ^ | July 24, 2007 | DAVE ALTIMARI, COLIN POITRAS, LYNNE TUOHY And DON STACOM | Courant Staff Writers

A judge getting ready to send Joshua Komisarjevsky to prison in 2002 called him a "cold, calculating predator."

Equipped with night-vision goggles and armed with a knife, he would slash his way through screens into houses around his hometown of Cheshire, stealing mostly electronic equipment and petty cash to pay for a drug habit.

Steven Hayes had a record more noteworthy for its length than the severity of the crimes - decades of larcenies, burglaries and check forgeries. Hayes committed most of his crimes in the northwest corner, near his home in Winsted - far from Sorghum Mill Drive in Cheshire, where the horrific events that landed him back in court played out early Monday.

Although it is still unclear why they chose the home of Dr. William Petit Jr., one thing is certain, police say: The "calculating predator" and the career criminal descended to a level of violence that is almost unfathomable.

When the ordeal was over, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and her daughters, Hayley Petit, 18, and Michaela Petit, 11, were dead. The girls, sources said, were tied to their beds and raped, then left to burn after gasoline was poured around their beds and ignited.

Late Tuesday, the state medical examiner's office said Hawke-Petit was strangled and her daughters died of smoke inhalation. Their deaths were ruled homicides.

William Petit was beaten almost beyond recognition with a baseball bat, tied up in the basement and left for dead, only to make his way out of the house and to a neighbor before his home exploded into flames.

Crimes like this are why I am against the death penalty.

There must be a Painful Torture for Life penalty instead.

OMG... I didn't realize the two young daughters were raped, too. I'm sitting here in tears (again).

Since Monday morning I've been shaken by this unspeakable crime, as have most Connecticut residents. Prayers for Dr. Petit and for his (extended) family, friends and patients...

I hope the two POS animals that did this get the death penalty ASAP, and that there's a special place in hell for them...

As a physician, blatantly missing a diagnosis can lead to criminal liability for negligence. Why aren’t those on the parole board who let criminals like this prey on others held accountable in the same way? At the very least Dr. Petit should be allowed to sue them. Parole boards need to be held accountable for their decisions.

I sent a letter to the hartford courant tellign them that we need 1) a workable death penalty, 2) a three-strikes law, and 3) more emphasis on self defense (firearms).

wanna bet it never sees the light of day?

From the article:
Authorities are believed to be considering whether to bring murder and capital felony charges against both men, which would make them eligible for the death penalty.

Go to the posting board(s) that courant.com has and the number of postings calling for the perps to “fry” by a large number of the posters, both from posters living in CT and those living outside. This news story has gone national bigtime because CT is seen as a liberal state. I hope it change things for the better in CT.

I have two daughters and a wife. When I think of this horrific crime and what those beautiful young women went through it’s almost too much to bear.

And it is also why, again, as the only man in the house with 2 daughters and a wife.......yes....I do keep a loaded 9 millimeter Smith and Wesson handy....I am the only one who knows where it is.....the safety is always on.......but I will not hesitate to use it first....and ask questions later....

May God comfort the Dr. who survived.

Another crime that demonstrates why its a good idea to have a dog, any dog (large is my preference) that will bark. Burglars, rapists, they all avoid homes with dogs that are alert.

My dogs have one ‘job’ in our family. They are required to give me ten seconds warning in the middle of the night to arm myself.

So far, so good.

"Parole boards need to be held accountable for their decisions."

I think it's time we get rid of parole. What's the purpose? The perp gets a certain sentence because he/she committed a certain crime, AND they get let out early??? Why??? Why bother giving them a sentence? And, time off for good behaviour should be abolished. You do the crime, you do the time, ALL OF IT! No exceptions!

Hayes was on special parole in connection with an October 2003 burglary conviction out of Bantam. He was given a five-year sentence and his release date from parole was May 4, 2008.Hayes also has a conviction for possession of marijuana in 2002 and several convictions in 1996 and 1997 for passing bad checks, forgery, petty larceny and escape from custody, the latter stemming from an incident in Hartford in 1996. In 1993, he was convicted of a burglary charge in Litchfield and given a five-year suspended sentence and five years of probation. Hayes was arrested three months later and charged with forgery and violating his probation. He was sent back to jail but it was unclear Tuesday how much time he served before being released again. Hayes also has a record for theft of a firearm and carrying a firearm without a permit, officials said. A bail commissioner said Hayes was issued 23 disciplinary tickets during his times in prison. Three members of the Department of Correction's special emergency response team accompanied the two suspects to court.

Three-strikes laws save lives.

I agree totally. What really sticks in my craw is how the victim and/or his family will have to truck on down to the parole hearing every so many years and re-testify as to some monster needs to STAY in prison. Talk about giving someone 20 to life.

If someone murdered one of my family members and I had to keep going before a parole board, I’d consider that cruel and unusual punishment. When the jury or judge invokes the sentence, then the sentence should be served.

There was another crime in Bloomfield last week (or the week before?) where a husband and wife (only people in the house) were held hostage as they were being robbed. The burglars broke into their house at about 3 or 4AM, tied them up and "assaulted" them, as I heard on the radio news.

Does anyone know if these guys did this crime also?

One lesson we can take from this is to never, ever believe what someone threatening your life has to say. If someone tells you not to go to the authorities or they’ll kill your family, chances are they’re going to kill your family anyway — so you might as well make a scene.

Take your weapon, your wife and your daughters to a “girl-friendly” range. There are plenty of ranges that make an extra effort for the ladies.

With a little patience and gentle guidance they’ll be dragging YOU to the gun shows.

However; you’ll likely need to get a few more guns since everybody will want their own...

They may still end up getting the death penalty administered by some fellow prisoners, al la Jeffrey Dahmer.

I'm surprised they're still alive after ramming three police cruisers while fleeing the scene. If they had done that here in L.A., they would have been cut to ribbons by police gunfire.

There are a number of safe storage options for defensive firearms, hiding it is no guarantee your kids won't find it.

Everybody in the house should be educated in firearms safety, and you should carefully choose a storage option that makes sense for your situation.
