HARTFORD, Conn. - Two men with long rap sheets were on parole when they broke into a doctor’s home, strangled his wife and killed the couple’s two daughters in a fire they set to cover their tracks, authorities said...
Joshua Komisarjevsky, 26, of Cheshire, and Steven Hayes, 44, of Winsted...arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault, sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary, robbery, arson, larceny and risk of injury to children. Bail was set at $15 million each, which Judge Christina G. Dunnell said was warranted because of the men’s criminal histories.
State officials are re-examining their policies after learning two convicted burglars out on parole are accused of killing three family members during a home invasion and arson...
The suspects entered the Petits’ Cheshire home at about 3 a.m. Monday, planning to burglarize it, state police said. When they found the family at home, they beat Dr. Petit, then tied up his wife and daughters...The men were caught in the family’s car after ramming several police cruisers as they fled the burning home...
Hawke-Petit and her daughters were found dead inside. Dr. Petit escaped the blaze and told police what happened...
Long history of robberies
...each have more than 20 prior burglaries on their records. At the time of the killings, both were free on parole after serving prison time for burglary convictions in 2003...Farr said the parole board’s staff scoured its files Tuesday to see if any mistakes were made and couldn’t find any obvious problems.
“But three people died,” Farr said. “We’re not going to say, ‘Those things happen.’ We’ve got to see if there is anything we can do that would reduce the likelihood of this happening in the future.”
In Connecticut, prisoners may be released from confinement and receive parole after serving more than half of their sentences...

It’s time our justice system admit that there is a subset of people who will never fit into civil society, and there is no point in giving them chance after chance. In times past they probably would have been done away with, either by whatever passed for a justice system, or by someone they harmed in some way. Today, we slap em on the wrist and release them again and again to wreak havoc on law abiding citizens.

Here's an idea for career criminals: convict them, revoke their citizenship and sell them as slaves to a far away foreign country. They can work in the mines or shovel manure for the rest of their miserable lives.
Exactly! And pretty much for hte sam reasons we keep fire extinguishers. Guns = punk extinguishers, and could have saved this family, and our ation, from such a tragedy.
My opinion about the Parole Board would get me banned for life on this board.

This is a terrible loss. Terrible - I wonder what the bleading hearts in the local papers will say. I have noticed that people in the wealthier areas, such as Greenwich, tend to be very liberal.
In the least a big dog. I wonder if the family owned a weapon? We will not know if he did not but if he did the anti crowd will clamor that it did not help them.

Cheshire is one of the more conservative areas in Connecticut (which isn't really saying much).
And they are self-righteous to boot.
My take is that Connecticut probably doesn’t have a very active death penalty...Much less a death row...But then again that type of punishment might be letting this scum off too easy...

WTF is a "normal mode" for a home invasion break in where the family is robbed, beaten, raped, tied up, set on fire and left to die? The perps didn't have a history of violence? Charlie Manson never technically killed anyone, and John Wayne Gacey didn't have a history of violence until the first time. Liberals need to get the message that after two or three offenses some people are irredeemable and need to be put away.

Oddly enough I recently reread a novel on my shelf called The Truth Machine. In it, and about at this time, a law is passed after years of being pushed. After a second violent felony the perp gets a trial. He then has the right to appeal but the appeal process is completed in one month. If he loses the appeal it is lights out immediatly.

In this crazy backwards world the laws pertaining to own a big dog are probably harder than owning a gun.

Unfortunately our legal circus won’t stand for a timely execution of sentence (pun intended) instead they give leftist unions far too much time to come up with some lame excuse why the perps shouldn’t fry.

Ironic - too bad the Doctor didn’t shoot these guys. What a shame.
This is an awful story. It seems that CT will seek the death penalty which I hope is a consolation to the survivor - these two creeps should never have been released but released they were. I wonder how many crimes have been stopped because would be victims were armed.
