Jihad Spence: Fred Thompson's Pan-Islamist Campaign Manager
DebbieSchlussel.com ^ | July 25, 2007 | Debbie Schlussel

Posted on 07/26/2007 11:00:53 AM PDT by The 9 11 Generation

As a Senator, he took marching orders from James Zogby of the pan-Islamist Arab American Institute, opposing profiling of Arabs, the use of secret evidence against Muslims (at the behest of Muslim groups), attempting to repeal the Clinton counterterrorism package, refusing to fund computer tracking of student and other foreign aliens, giving millions in our tax money right to Hezbollah, and putting CAIR on the map on Capitol Hill (taking the group's officials around to meet other Senators and Members of Congress). He took campaign contributions from the relatives of Hezbollah-backed top Lebanese officials after he got the group millions in our tax money.

Spence was one of only two Senators in the entire U.S. Senate who refused to sign a letter calling on President Clinton to condemn Palestinian terrorism and Yasser Arafat. This was at the height of a series of homicide bombings in Israel in 1999 and 2000.

As Energy Secretary, he gave top secret tours of nuclear facilities, as well as detailed information on how we secure them to Muslim nations who are our enemies. And he gave out undue post-9/11 awards to Al-Qaeda money-launderers . . . at the White House. The money launderers were raided by U.S. Customs Service agents.

After he left the Bush cabinet, Spence became a lobbyist for Mid-Eastern Muslim countries that practice the Arab boycott of Israel and don't really like us too much either. He took their money and until the Thompson race, did their bidding...

Guys, I don't care who you have supported in the 2008 race up to this point, but Spencer Abraham is bad news. At the very best this guy is incredibly weak on the WOT, and at worst is part of the problem. This is a terrible choice for Fred Thompson, and if it hurts him, well, it was his bad choice.

the lebanese part has been scrubbed from more than a dozen of his bios online.

But not from HERE:

Lebanon Awards
“The National Order of the Cedar”
to Spencer Abraham,
U.S. Secretary of Energy

In fact, here’s the link as a cache, in case this one disappears, too.

I doubt Fred would formulate WOT policies based on this guy’s opinions alone. A campaign manager is not the same as a policy adviser. If Abraham can deliver states like Michigan to Fred, then he’s a good choice. Time will tell.

I have a problem with Spencer Abraham because of his views on immigration (ironically, him and Thompson did but heads on the issue in the senate, and they did vote against each other more then once), that said, the guy is not a muslim, is not a terrorist sympathizer and is one of the founding members of the federalist society.

He is not a problem, I would rather he not be part of the campaign (Its odd to me why he was chosen, personal relationship?), but this article is just a hit piece in disguise.

I’m not saying I agree with all of the conclusions in this article, but the facts about not condemning Arafat and his open-borders policies, those are just not good things. And of course people will say he’s just campaign manager and not a policy maker, but I figure it is typically a good idea to pick a campaign manager who agrees with you on big issues like the WOT and immigration.

Yes, this is a terrible Honor, I'd scrub it too...

"This is an important occasion for Lebanon and for the relationship between our two countries. We are celebrating today the achievements of a remarkable son of Lebanon, and through him, the achievements of all Americans of Lebanese descent. "Spencer Abraham’s success story is fascinating because it is simple and exemplary. His father was born in a tiny village of South Lebanon called Dergaya and emigrated to this great nation nearly a century ago. His mother was born in the U.S., the daughter of Lebanese immigrants. Spencer, the grandson of a tiny village you could hardly see on a map went on to graduate from the Harvard School of Law and the Michigan State University, became Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, Co-Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and Senator from Michigan from 1995 to 2001 and Secretary of Energy since 2001. "His journey is breathtaking, but comparable to those taken by thousands of other Lebanese immigrants to this great nation. It starts with a strong family upbringing, focusing on education and moral values, goes on with an adventurous plunge into a hospitable land of opportunity, and is crowned with success, rewards and the opportunity to serve. Walking with Spencer Abraham along this arduous road were his wife Jane and the members of the splendid family they both raised. Julie and Betsy are here with us, escorted by my son Philip, having all decided after careful consideration that Secretary Abraham fully deserves that they stay up late to witness his moment of glory as a Lebanese American. In addition, Spencer was surrounded by the support of the extended clan of the Abrahams and the Hersheys, many of them are with us this evening. "Secretary Abraham has done what the sons and daughters of Lebanese emigrants to the U.S. do best: blending harmoniously their loyalty to the country which has welcomed and adopted (them), the United States of America, with their love for the country of their roots, Lebanon. Thus, Lebanon is honoring Spencer Abraham not only for what he has done, but also for what he is: a role model for all Lebanese expatriates and an inspiration to all those young emigrants who are starting their new lives, driven by the same hopes and determination embodied by Spencer Abraham. "We are a nation of emigrants, there are four million Lebanese living in Lebanon, and more than fourteen million of them living abroad. In this country alone, there are more than three million Americans of Arab descent, the majority of whom are of Lebanese descent, involved in every walk of life and successful in every profession. They have demonstrated their inventiveness, courage and loyalty to this country for over a hundred years, and their dedication has been rewarded generously. "There are prominent Lebanese Americans in the Democratic as well as in the Republican field, from California to West Virginia and from Michigan to Florida. Among us today are three prominent members of the Lebanese caucus in the Congress, Congressman Nick Rahall, a Democrat from West Virginia and Congressman Darrell Issa, a Republican from California. We even have an American of Lebanese descent representing the third option (for U.S. president). Ralph Nader is a living proof that you would find a Lebanese on each side of the fence, even when there are three sides to that fence.

Yup got to hate them damn foreigners from over across the Atlantic. I don't like Hummus either...

From what I understand Spencer Abraham is of Arab Christian descent. Kind of hard for Arab Christian to back radical Muslims if you ask me.

I like Fred Thompson, he's my favorite prospect for President. However, I do agree that this was not a wise move. Fred Thompson has in part inspired excitement among conservatives because of his excellent articulation - and blunt speaking manner - about the war that has been declared upon us by Islamic jihadists.

Obviously, those of us who believe strongly in the need for America to prosecute this war aggressively and effectively would have to wish that Thompson would surround himself with aides who share that passion to win the war decisively.

There are a lot of people using this as a chance to bash the front runner. It would seem that Spencer was hired to manage the campaign, not to decide policy. I also don’t believe this guy is some sort of terrorist. Here is his bio from whitehouse.gove (as I posted on another thread). If you read it, you might see why he was hired to manage this capaign. He has a great resume.

“Spencer Abraham was sworn in as the tenth Secretary of Energy on January 20, 2001, following his confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Prior to becoming Energy Secretary, Abraham represented Michigan in the United States Senate from 1995 to 2001.

Elected in 1994, he served on the Budget, Commerce, Science and Transportation, Judiciary, and Small Business Committees. He also chaired two-important subcommittees: Manufacturing and Competitiveness, and Immigration.

A forceful voice for the business community and free enterprise, Abraham endorsed policies and practices that promote and enhance America’s competitiveness and global leadership. Among other things, Abraham was a leader in the Senate on support of free trade, legal and regulatory reform, and tax reform.

Representing Michigan in the Senate made Abraham keenly aware of the many issues impacting manufacturers, businesses, and consumers.

In addition, Abraham was widely viewed by his colleagues and most observers as the Senator with the best understanding of high-tech policy and issues and the contributions this important economic sector makes to America’s economy and global success.

Among other accomplishments, Abraham authored the Electronic Signature in Global and National Commerce Act, establishing a federal framework for on-line contracts and signatures; the Government Paperwork Elimination Act, and the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which protects Internet domain names for businesses and persons against copyright and trademark infringements.

Maintaining affable relationships with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Abraham authored twenty-two pieces of legislation that have been signed into law, an unprecedented accomplishment for a freshman Senator.

Before his election to the Senate, Abraham served as co-chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) from 1991 to 1993.

Prior to his tenure at the NRCC and following a successful term as the Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, Abraham was tapped to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff to Vice President Dan Quayle from 1990 to 1991. In this senior position, he worked closely with the Vice President and senior administration officials, managing the daily operations of the Vice President’s office, budget, and staff. Abraham was also active in the affairs of the Vice President’s Competitiveness Council, the Vice President’s operation designed to provide administrative leadership on issues pertaining to U.S. business competitiveness.

At 30, Abraham was elected to serve as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, a position he held from 1983 to 1990. Abraham took over a party deeply in debt and not holding any major positions in the state government, but quickly began to reestablish the party as one of the strongest state political operations in the country.

Spencer Abraham and his wife, Jane, live in Michigan and Virginia with their three children. He holds a law degree from Harvard University and is a native of East Lansing, Michigan.”

Anyone suggesting that Abraham shouldbe distrustedsimply because of where he was born is just plain wrong.

He should be distrusted for his open border positions.

Then I would urge you to find out more imformation about the Christians in Palestine. For example Arafat married an Eastern Orthodox Christian woman (converted to Islam so she could get her hands on his money.)

In defense of Debbie Schlussel... I think alot of FReepers who have commented here have broadbrushed her concerns as being that he is Lebanese. But that's not what she said. She cited a few examples of instances where Spence Abraham raised eyebrows among those who want to aggressively fight back in the war the jihadists declared on the United States.

In my book that doesn't disqualify Fred Thompson - he's still my guy - but it does offer a legitimate issue to discuss.

I like George Bush's Supreme Court picks... but that didn't mean I didn't howl vociferously when he nominated Harriet Miers who I felt was a very poor choice.

So, we shouldn't be afraid to have these discussions. They are healthy for Fred's campaign to hear from the base -- because it will obviously become clear to us that there's nothing to be concerned about, or else if there is, then our discussions will help to nudge Team Fred to be more acutely aware of bad decisions and rectify them or not repeat them.

I say let's have these discussions - just so long as we're constructive about them.
