You're absolutely right! And the aching frustration of seeing the Republican Party and the conservative movement bashing itself to pieces is made only the more insupportable by the knowledge that we are utterly impotent to deflect George Bush from his obdurate course of destruction.

By God, George Bush dreams of a multicultural society without Borders and he will see that we get it even of it does cost us everything.

wow, even the media is afraid of fred....

So, the question is...is NBC pulling this out of their...ear? Does Fred have an advisor who's out of school on this? Is NBC being played to manage expectations?

That's the problem with unnamed sources...you never know.

Nice post--but you didn't mention anything about "losers from McCain's campaign," as was tennmountainman's point.
I think Fred needs to face the fact that his honeymoon is starting to fade.
I do think some people feel that way.

I’d say the ‘sources’ are those released from the campaign. And given its not official yet, what exactly were the expectations, according to those still with Thompson’s campaign?

Perhaps this is actually a brilliant Rovian strategy?
Make it easy for Republicans to run against Bush with impunity, so they can be the “anti-establishment” candidate in a race against Clinton & Bush, Inc.

We are waiting until Fred announces before sending money. If we send money now, and then he does not run for the Presidency, what happens to our money?

I too will give to Fred when announces. I wish he would surprise everyone and throw his hat in. But I understand why he hasn’t yet. His Law and Order reruns will not be allowed to run due to equal time rules on tv.

I’m all for people even from loser campaigns such as McCains supporting their family with jobs. However, why would I want to hire people who helped McCain get into the position he is now in?

They knew what they were getting into when they signed up with McCain.

Huckabee was a tax-raiser as governor, and he was weak on illegal immigration issues. Ask any Arkansas Freeper.

I like Hunter on all issues. Defense, immigration, and trade, and he was right on all of them before they came to the fore recently. From what little I know of Huckabee he has a more mixed record as a conservative. My basic fear is that if conservatives are frozen by a fantasy about Thompson and it doesn’t pan out, they are stuck with liberal / flip-flopping candidates (again). Bush I, Bush II, Romney/Guilianni . . . not sure how much more of it the party can take and still pretend to be conservative.

Fred’s staff choices are hitching their wagons to HIS star, not vice versa.
They’re taking HIS lead and will prove their worth. And Fred’s.

Hmmmm... well just yesterday there was a headline about a "shakeup" in Thompson's campaign. His old manager, Tom Collamore, is out, Spencer Abraham (a fundraiser guy) and now today we hear "insider reports" of his campaign not meeting its cash expectations....

Perhaps there's a double correlation?
Perhaps that's why Tom Collamore is out, and perhaps it also tells us who this mystery source just might be...

He got $500 from me the night his website went up...and not a dime since.

I didn't go quite so large up front. Gave $100 when the web site started. Will give another $900 when he is in for real. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Media is trying to make a negative out of a non story. When he jumps in the money will come.

“Never fall in love with a politician, they’ll break your heart every time” allows for a more wide-eyed approach to elections, not the doe-eyed approach of many at FR.

We don’t have to worry about that if we wait until he announces. I’m waiting.

I’m waiting until he shows me that he is strongly against the NAU, the SSP and a whole lot of provisions in the Illegal Immigration Bill...chain migration, Dream Act, etc, etc, etc. If he comes through with strong border security and denounces the others, he’ll get my $$’s.

I agree. I won’t contribute till he announces. If he does, I’ll open the checkbook.

I know you're being facetious about Rove but I strained to see any humor about the man at all. He has collaborated intimately with George Bush to bring about this immigration fiasco. All of this might have been avoided, all of this could easily have been avoided if George Bush had only, quietly, adhered to his oath and enforced the law on the border and against criminal employers seeking unfair advantage against their competitors by hiring under paid illegals. He and Karl Rove made a conscious decision for short-term electoral advantage at the expense of the party and the whole of the conservative movement. They might have killed the movement. A judge in Hazleton today strikes down a law in which a municipality, desperate to swim out of its tsunami of illegals, is for a bit and to take steps to save itself. The next step will be to enfranchise the illegals and the whole concept of conservatism will be washed away with the tsunami.

Rove and Bush acted out of sheer selfishness as they swaddled themselves in self-righteousness.

Finally, I see no chance whatsoever for the Republican Party in ' 09 if they run a Rovian campaign. Gingrich is right, although it is not the right messenger, we cannot win by running against. We must find new ideas and expressed them in clear and compelling words.

I believe I’m correct in stating that Collamore was always temporary in his position and has moved to another position.

That’s the spin, yes.
But campaigns always say that sort of thing to save face for both the candidate and the staffer.
