Putin takes hard line on U.S. defense plans

Updated: 07/26/07 6:52 AM

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir V. Putin vowed Wednesday to strengthen Russia’s military capability and step up spying abroad in response to U.S. plans to build missile defense sites and to deploy troops in Eastern Europe.

“The situation in the world and internal political interests require the Foreign Intelligence Service to permanently increase its capabilities, primarily in the field of information and analytical support for the country’s leadership,” Putin said in a meeting with senior military and security officers in remarks that were posted on the Kremlin’s Web site. The Foreign Intelligence Service is a successor agency to the KGB.

Putin did not identify specific nations as targets, but officials in the United States and Britain have said recently that Moscow has intensified its spying in those countries.

Putin said U.S. plans to station troops in Eastern Europe and Washington’s intention to base missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic pose security challenges for Russia. Washington says the facilities are necessary to protect the United States and Europe from missiles launched by Iran or other rogue states.

“..missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic pose security challenges for Russia.”

Hate to admit it, but Russia is right. Then again, we are forced to build these sites simply because we can’t trust communists. (Only Muslims are trustworthy.)

Scary stuff, and of course, not news worthy for most MSM.

“and step up spying abroad in response to U.S. plans to build missile defense sites and to deploy troops in Eastern Europe.”

Good - this will bankrupt them again.

Why on earth, does Russia still behave like it's the cold war era? Why can't they just move on? Sheesh!

In a way you, and the Sov..er Russians are right. Since their foreign policy depends upon fear and threats. Anything which would diminish their basically only tool makes Putin weaker( Zero sum, Marxist calculus thing ).

Anyways, the Russians and Putin are always caterwauling and their threats are squelched out in the calculus. As they say in the markets, the Russians are already discounted. That’s what happens when you only have one note. People tune you out.

Read Banfield and Moral Basis of a Bankrupt Society.

The Russians have a culture that precludes internal development. They believe that life is a zero sum game and that the only way to advance is to take. They have no trust in anything and they can never be trusted.

They have only survived by systematic genocide and wholesale theft.

Like, even if the Russians found out something, what are they going to do with it? Build world class organizations that can long term exploit it?

I
don’t
think
so.

We are doing it. Putin stutters and shouts. For Putin, it could be boob bait for the locals. Bush couldn’t care.

I really, REALLY don't like the idea that what you say is true. In my comfortable world, we and the Russians can get along and help each other with various world issues.

“I really, REALLY don’t like the idea that what you say is true”

Tell me about it - my parents lost 1200 hectares or 3000 acres to the Russians - prime Carpathian sub alpine property.

But they fled with their lives - these poor sobs lost everything.

Putin apparently thinks Russia is one of those rogue states. Wonder why ?

Russia is still angry at having lost the cold war. They want to reverse their losses. What they don’t realize is that their rabid behavior will only earn them another humiliating defeat at our hands.

I wouldn’t necessarily say so. Russia gets away with a lot more than they would ever have during the Cold War.

Don’t you look on America lately? Who deploys the new weaponry and bases in Europe? America provokes Russia. Russia should answer.
