TEL AVIV — Despite appeals by United States, Syria has maintained its forward ballistic missile positions near Israel. Israeli military sources said the Syrian military has positioned its Scud C and Scud D ballistic missile batteries in southern Syria. The sources said the missile batteries have maintained full combat readiness and could be launched at any time.
The sources said the Syrian missiles, including the SS-21, could reach virtually any part of the Jewish state.

On July 24, Israeli military intelligence briefed Cabinet ministers, including Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, on Syrian military capabilities. Intelligence officers said the high readiness of Syrian missile batteries suggest that Damascus was preparing a first strike. "We have tried to reach an arrangement where each side takes measures to ease tensions," a military source said. "The Syrians have not responded."
[On Thursday, at least 15 Syrians soldiers were killed and another 50 injured in a huge blast in a base outside the northern city of Aleppo. A Syrian source said the explosion took place in an armory used for military exercises. Syrian television said authorities have ruled out an insurgency strike.]

The sources said Syria has also brought military personnel in plainclothes to help re-populate villages in the Golan Heights near the demilitarized zone with Israel. They said this could indicate that Syria was adopting the Hizbullah model of establishing a civilian shield from which to attack Israel.
"Israel wants peace, but we must be prepared," Olmert said. "We must not allow ourselves to be taken by surprise."

that’s got to be a little nerve racking if they have indeed moved these SCUDs to full combat readiness, the flight time will be very short if they fly. Its also interesting to note the only other services that have moved to full alert are the air defense troops and special ops. Almost sounds like they are preparing to launch the missiles in conjunction with special ops raids into the Golan and are then expecting the IAF to come rolling into town, hence the alert level for the air defense corps
That won't stop an armored column racing straight to Damascus.
I thought Pelosi just visited Syria to read them the riot act and that they were cowering in fear for her.

Everyone needs to remember that ever since the first Gulf War the Isrealis have been working on an improved version of the Patriot Missle known (called the Arrow, I believe). This one can actually do what the original Patriot was supposed to do.
I doubt many of those Syrian missles would hit their targets. Lots of them would never leave the ground courtesey of the IAF.
It’s a pretty sure bet that Mosad has people that will let them know if any of this bloviating from Syria gets to be more than hot air. At which point the Isrealis will do what is necessary in the face of an imminent threat.
Olmert may be a wuss, but even he will have to act if the military and intellignence services tell him that a missle launch is imminent and likely.

Supposedly the Syrians were keeping most of their Scuds in hidden locations. Bringing them out into the open puts them at risk. They have a known chemical WMD capability and probably acquired or improved their Biological WMD with Saddam's toys. The Israeli's do not want to launch a ground attack toward Damascus. The road to Damascus is the most fortified position currently on the planet. Very few tanks would make it through, especially with the improved Russian Anti-Tank missiles. The Syrian's are probably deploying a MAD asset that would prevent Israel from launching significant attacks on Damascus from the air. The question is why would Israel want to retaliate against Damascus from the Air ?
A massed missile attack, with mixed varieties of warheads could trigger Israel’s Samson option. It could be seen as a provocation for nuclear response!

I serious doubt pill boxes, tank trenches, minefields and anti-tank weapons are going to stop a concerted effort to march on Damascus. The IAF and IDF artillery would pave the way. Granted, it may be bloody, but the Syrian military isn’t going to stop columns of Merkavas heading towards Damascus
Syria has been planning for an Israeli ground incursion for decades. Dont see how that much blood would be worth driving to Damascus. What will Israel do when they get there ? Certainly not repeat what we have been doing in Baghdad. Israel does not have those types of resources available. Any ground combat will probably be limited to WB, Lebanon and Golan Heights.
My guess would be that Hamas/Syria/Iran/Russia are planning an escalation of last summers rocket attacks. This time with more accurate rockets landing everywhere within Israel. Syria will use their scuds as a MAD deterrent to prevent Israel from retaliating on Damascus. The only other option would be a massed rocket attack that attempts to catch the Israelis off guard and that inflicts such great casualties that the Israelis do not ever recover from. But it looks to me as if the Islamists are slowly boiling the Israeli Frog hopping it wont jump out of the pan and go Samson on them. The Chemical and Biological armed WMD Scuds in Syria that can land anywhere within Israel would be how the Islamists intend to keep the frog within the pan as the temps are slowly raised. Attrition or slow boiling seems to be their plan.

Why do Arabs/Mussies get a pass on different rules of engagement then everyone else? They target civilian population centers and they hide in their own civilian population centers, knowing that they will not be attacked.
If the missiles are already in launch posture, just how is Olmert going to have enough time to do anything but kiss his A$$ goodbye? Unless the Israelis have constant surveillance, and can observe the last minute preparations, (The SS-21 is a solid booster, so it's ready to go as soon as Assad says the word, the Scuds might have to be fueled, according to some sources they take about 1 1/2 hours to prepare for launch. Some of that "countdown" may have been done already for the missiles that are forward deployed. Syrian Scuds are said to have a cluster, chemical, unitary VX chemical and unitary high explosive warheads available. (VX is a nerve gas).
i agree with you, Israel has no need to take Damascus. But talking strictly in terms of capabilities, the IDF, IF they wanted to could march on Beirut, Damascus, Cario and Amman
Unlike us, the Isrealis have a very good network of human intelligence sources. They don't have to rely on sat photos that tell you nothing of what decision makers controlling those missles intend to do.
Ever since the Church Commission, we have gone out of our way to destroy our Humint capabilities. Mossad probably has the best such capability in the world. This last debacle was not a failure of intelligence on Isreals part, it was a failure of intestinal fortitude on the part of Olmert.
Since the locations of most, if not all of these missles is known, and the Syrians probably know this as well, they will be moved before any firing. Any time those missles are moved the isrealis will know. They will probably know, before they are moved, where they are going, before the order is given to move them. Pilots will already be airborne with strike packages and locations to deliver them.
In fact, the IAF, everyday, flies a CAP on its borders that can deliver hardware at a moments notice.
Will some get through? Probably. But then Isreal also practices civil defense for such an attack. They all have gas masks and carry first aid kits in their cars, at their places of business and or at home. They demonstrated during Gulf War 1 how prepared they were. They are probably the most prepared populace on the planet for a WMD attack.
Preparations for such an attack would have to be made (beyond prepping a scud to fire) that the Syrians would have a very hard time hiding (such as prepparing for the inevitable retaliation).
