The Mayors of Wyandotte Countys four cities are joining a national campaign against illegal guns.
Unified Government Mayor Joe Reardon, Bonner Springs Mayor Clausie Smith, Edwardsville Mayor Heinz Rodgers and Lake Quivira Mayor Larry Meeker have all signed the resolution.
The effort was launched by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. More than 230 Mayors from cities across America have also joined the effort.
The resolution signed by the four Wyandotte County Mayors states there is no greater threat to public safety than the threat of illegal guns. More than 30,000 Americans are killed every year because of gun violence.
The Mayors pledge to:
- Punish - to the maximum extent of the law - criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.
- Target and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break the law by knowingly selling guns to straw purchasers.
- Oppose all federal efforts to restrict cities right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to combat illegal gun trafficking.
- Work to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and tracing of illegal guns.
- Support all local, state, and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.

I wouldn’t enter Wyandotte County without a gun....legally.
When the city for which you’re responsible is breaking apart at the seams under the pressures generated by decades of failed social policy, what better method to deflect blame for your flawed social agenda, your incompetence, and your ineffectuality than to set up a straw man consisting of inanimate objects and their law-abiding owners, then be seen by the mob to attack it.
I risk it for the BBQ and Mexican food.
