I'm just about finished with Rowan Scarborough's fine book, Sabotage: America's Enemies Within the CIA. It's highly recommended. Paints a very different picture than what the MSM provides. Lots of detail
Here is the material from the inside flap of the book:
"From the Inside Flap How Bush-hating CIA Bureaucrats Are Sabotaging the War on Terror
Since the attacks on September 11, 2001, intelligence collection has become the number-one weapon in the effort to defeat al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. A plot penetrated is an attack stopped. And to the outside observer, the CIA has performed well as a key partner in the Bush administration's War on Terror. But as Rowan Scarborough reveals in this groundbreaking new book, significant elements within the CIA are undermining both the president and national security through leaks, false allegations, and outright sabotage.
Using his first-rate sources in all levels of national security--from field officers to high-ranking analysts to former intelligence heads--Scarborough paints a disturbing picture of partisan politics endangering the success of our campaigns abroad and the very lives of our soldiers and agents.
In Sabotage, you'll learn:
* How CIA analysts repeatedly leak details about classified intelligence programs with the dual intent of ending them and damaging the president * How, on at least eight occasions, intelligence officials have made serious allegations of wrongdoing against the president's men--which turned out to be false * Why, contrary to popular belief, the CIA has become predominantly liberal * How a CIA turf battle prevented special operators from pursuing and capturing a notorious Taliban leader * How current and former CIA officers fueled conspiracy theories that President Bush orchestrated the 9/11 attacks on America * How a CIA leak to the New York Times deprived the U.S. of critical information in the War on Terror * How press leaks by the CIA have damaged relations with our foreign allies in the War on Terror * How a CIA analyst worked with Democrats to sabotage the nomination of John Bolton to the UN * How Clinton's downsizing of the CIA led to the closing of stations in scores of jihadist breeding grounds--including Hamburg, Germany, where the 9/11 plot was hatched
The CIA's job is to collect facts and let the White House, the Pentagon, and the State Department make national security policy. But, as Scarborough conclusively demonstrates, an agency that is supposed to be scrupulously nonpartisan has become increasingly political--during a time of war--against America's elected commander in chief.
About the Author Rowan Scarborough covers national security for the Washington Examiner. A Navy veteran, he covered the Pentagon for the Washington Times for nearly two decades, where he built a tremendous reputation for breaking news. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Rumsfeld's War and has been featured on scores of radio and TV shows.
Typical American reply:
“Big deal, did you hear about how LiLo got to party last night?”
( /sarc barely off)
I heard an interview with the author on the Mark Levin show (with substitute host) I’m not sure I believe his entire story, but to the extent that his story is or may be true, this is an incredibly stenchy problem.
Tough to do. Look at the problems he’s having with letting the Attorney’s go even those whose contracts had expired. Trying to clean it out would result in a lot of leaks from their friends and the media who has been getting the leaks for years would also go after Bush for cutting off their bread and butter. Most of the people involved are covered by civil service and that makes it next to impossible to do a quick clean sweep.
There would be a similar if you tried to clean up the State Department.
He knows what’s what and has gone around them to get what’s needed.
“Tough to do.”
Yep, the Presidency is a tough job. But, it’s a job that he said he wanted and a job he promised to perform. I haven’t seen him make any effort at all to solve these problems.
Remember Porter Goss. That was part of why he was put in as CIA Director. That’s also why he’s now gone. They got him before he got them.
There is something that actually IS Bush’s fault.
That’s the problem with most Republican presidents, they work around the leftist traitors instead of trying to rout them out of Government, no matter the flak from leftist reporters. So, they continue to multiply like rabbits.
I had high expectations when Porter was chosen to clean out the CIA rats nest. That he failed means the rats nest still needs to be cleaned out (along with about 2/3 of the U.S. Senate).
Today, few of us would trust the CIA, FBI, NSA, DHS, or most of the federal government. Regaining that trust is a long road back, a very long road back...
Man you sure have that right. Bear hunting with a BB gun.
Sadly, increasingly, we’re seeing a naive, ineffective president, one fumble after another. It wouldn’t take all that many republicans to join the impeachment crowd = Dick Cheney as pres. Would he be as big a goof-up as GWB?
I’ll bet Hillary and Obama have a whole new roster lined up for the CIA once they take over. Expect the largest majority of them to be Islamofascists. Just “leveling the playing field.”
I was worried something would happen to Cheney when he had his heart surgery. At that point I wouldn’t leave it past the DemoRats to refuse to approve a new VP and then impeach Bush and assuming “their rightful place” in the White House.
There’s a lot of “what if” scenarios like Cheney’s health, but GWB was returned to office with the largest number of votes in history. But he’s fumbled a few things, the nomination of Harriet Miers, the social security mess, the naive assumption of instant democracy in iraq, the immigration mess, on and on.
And yet I see him finishing out his term if the ancient curse is gone : since harrison in 1840, every president elected every 20 years dies in office. Reagan ALMOST died in the hinckley assassination strike. So GWB has some 18 months to go. If iraq turns around and gets on its feet, that will be a big PLUS. Still, a LOT will happen before a new president is installed in jan 2009. If it’s the WITCH I’ll lead the secession effort here in MT, that’s for sure.
