Apparently the nuke plant has a coal plant too?

Not unusual, as part of the safty process nuclear plants don't run off their own power. This was in the news about a year ago when Glendale, AZ, had a transformer explode and Palo Verde without offsite power was forced to go into scram mode. On a side note it took 2 weeks for the 110 ton transformer to be moved from California to the site where the earlier one blew.

Mystery powder might be from DTE coal plant

By: Charles Slat
story updated July 31. 2007 3:10PM

A powder-like substance that was deposited over much of the Bolles Harbor area Monday might have been discharged from one of the smokestacks at Detroit Edison Co.'s Monroe Power Plant, investigators say.

"Apparently some time last night around the time this whole thing started, the Detroit Edison coalburner there did have a release," said Monroe County Sheriff's Office Capt. Brett Ortolano.

"The material we found is consistent with what would be released. DTE is sending out a crew to take a sample and is following the procedures for reporting it through the DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality)," he said. "We believe it's highly probable that's what was experienced."

"We believe it's probably coal residue or coal dust. That's consistent with an independent witness who said something came out of the stacks and with what Detroit Edison said happened at the plant."

Residents in the coastal area of Monroe Township found the talcum-like substance, described as ranging in color from white to tan to brown, covering cars, porches and other surfaces around their homes.

"It's not really believed to be hazardous at this point in time," Capt. Ortolano said. "We've checked with Mercy Memorial Hospital and have had no reports of ill health effects. We've had no reports of any adverse reactions."

He said one resident complained of getting the dust in his eyes, but the nature of the complaint was minor.

It's believed the discharge occurred between 8 and 8:10 p.m. Monday. Detroit Edison officials said they still are trying to confirm the source of the powder.

Although a small aircraft was seen in the area at the time of the first reports, Capt. Ortolano said that report apparently just coincided with the timing of the stack release.

Through our investigation, with the amount of substance there, it's improbable that it was released from a small aircraft. You just can't carry that much stuff in one," Capt. Ortolano said.

"Everything we see right now appears to be consistent with a Monroe Power Plant release," he added.

The sheriff's office investigation was multi-faceted, he said, and involved the FBI in Detroit and Washington, D.C.; Homeland Security; the Michigan State Police Crime Lab; the DEQ, and various airports.

He said lab analysis of the material remains pending.

“dropped a white powder substance”

“It was like brown sprinkles around the pool,”

“His wife described it as a tan substance”

white, brown, tan....it’s all the same.

???

As long as we're on the subject, and just to make you feel better;),this is from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,

A radiological dispersal device (RDD) is a device or mechanism that is intended to spread radioactive material from the detonation of conventional explosives or other means over a finite area such as spraying by a crop duster.

Get that car washed;)

It happened twice? I read the article about Chicago. If true, the driver ought to be dealt with severely.

I close my windows when the corporate farm next to me puts out that foamy poison. They bought 100’s of acres from retiring farmers or the estates. Now it is a neighbor nightmare with Badger equipment spreading the most foul liquids. We cannot even eat at home once they start spreading. We have been here for years but we will most likely sell our small farm soon. The previous farmers were
considerate. The equipment is now being run by idiots. They go too fast and knock down mailboxes regularly. We spend $19,000 on a new septic system and they spread this
awful crap everywhere. It ends up washing down roads, on tires and then drying and making a nice powdery fecal dust to puff up every time a vehicle uses the road. Yeeesh.

Did someone there die recently and want their ashes scattered in the harbor?

I can attest that it is not wise to uncork an urn in a Stearman, I was washing that guy out of my hair and ears for about a hour !!!
