Harry Potter: 3 More Things I Learned
ExileStreet ^ | 8/1/07 | John Mark Reynolds

Posted on 08/01/2007 6:59:32 AM PDT by ParsifalCA

I am warning those who have not finished the series . . . and there must be still a few of them by now. . . that there are spoilers ahead. I have just finished the last book . . . having spent an enjoyable evening with it thanks to Sam’s Club and an indulgent wife.

I am done with Harry Potter and enjoying the literary aftertaste the way one enjoys a fine meal almost as much after it is done as when it is being consumed . . . though it is a bit sad that the series is finished.

And it is really finished . . .

Will one be able to re-read the books with pleasure?

I think the answer is only a tentative “yes.” If one knows the “puzzles” and “the secrets” of the book, it will not take away the charm of the characters or the fun of a good Quidditch match, but the first read will always be the best.

The strength of these books is in the plot and the second read, when everything is known, will be satisfying for finding all the clues to what happens . . . but I am hard pressed to know if I will want to re-read them a third or fourth time.

A really great book is as good on the fourth read . . . and some children’s books (Little White Horse) are better.

I deeply enjoyed the last book and thought the ending satisfying. For those who found them quite Christian, they will find much in this last book to give strength to their idea.

Now if there was a very popular childrens series about a couple of crack-addicted, teenage, male-prostitutes - and this series described the kids life and habits in detail but also included a bunch of “life lessons” - would you want your kids to read this?

Kids can become crack addicts and prostitutes (whether a particular story is fiction or not). Kids can't pick up a stick, say Protego!, and create an invisible shield.

Anticipating your next argument, you can cite statistics showing the exponential rise in Wiccan believers since Harry Potter came out, right?

Crack and male prostitution are real. Magic is not, any more than light sabers, transformers, Spiderman, etc. I think most people realize that.

It’s fantasy, escapism. Yes, there is a serious side which you address, but it’s as far from Harry Potter as it is to “Bewitched” or “I Dream Of Jeanie”.

“Kids can become crack addicts and prostitutes (whether a particular story is fiction or not). Kids can’t pick up a stick, say Protego!, and create an invisible shield.”

Kids can not become involved in occultism????

Really???

I wonder why several B&Ns I’ve visited set out a display table of HP books and then fill a table right next to it will serious occultism books?

The Bible has many stories of murder, rape, and torture. People being fed to lions, put in fierily furnaces, robbed and left for dead by their own brothers, etc. It also includes a bunch of “life lessons” - would you want your kids to read this?

There is nothing in Deuteronomy that mentions that reading fiction on these topics is an abomination

No kidding. There's also nothing in the Bible about how reading about murder makes you a murderer. Go figure!

I was thinking about all the things you mentioned when I finished the last book.

In the course of fighting against evil and for a way of life that was good, many dear people were lost or injured.

I felt the most sorry about Fred because I thought of George and how his life would also die. It was odd, but she never mentioned George again.

But we have to keep in mind that, although there is a sad price for defending our way of life, it is worth it in the end.

He didn’t say kids can’t become involved in occultism, he said they can’t pick up a stick and say “Protego!” and create an invisible shield. They are two different things.

All of the “spells” in the HP books were made up completely by JK herself. There’s no occultism there.

“Magic is not, any more than light sabers, transformers, Spiderman, etc. I think most people realize that.”

Occultism, and occultic power is VERY real. Harry Potter, for the most part, is not the real thing - but it exposes children to the occultic world and can create in them a desire for the real thing.

That question only has validity if one takes the position that the Bible is a work of fiction. I'm fairly certain that PetroniusMaximus DOES NOT take this position, I know I don't.

Yes, because it accurately reflects life.

Can you really be serious with a question like that????

Interesting about your enjoyment of the audio books. Mr. A is into audio books right now because of an eye problem and he really, really likes them. I hear one going all the time.

I never thought I would like them, but after reading your post, I might try one.

Maybe Amazon will have some used ones on hand by now.

Sometimes you can get those used books for a few cents plus $3 s&H. It’s still a good deal. I got “It Takes a Parent” for my daughter for 46 cents and it’s not that old a book. The copy was great.

I have no interest in discussing something like this with someone who is so closed-minded and who has very interesting interpretations of several Bible passages. You should go to some of the kook websites where you can talk about the evils of Harry Potter with more like-minded folks. I’ve known many people whose kids have read the books and shown absolutely no interest in becoming “true” witches and warlocks. Fiction isn’t real, you see.

“So you really believe in evil spirits?”

I absolutely believe in the existence of demons.

Absolutely.

So you really believe in evil spirits?

It's actually an inherent part of Christianity.

So real stories of murder, rape, and torture. People being fed to lions, put in fierily furnaces, robbed and left for dead by their own brothers, etc. are preferable to fictional accounts of murder, rape, and torture. People being fed to lions, put in fierily furnaces, robbed and left for dead by their own brothers, etc.????

HUH?

Oh, pooh!

Would you say the same thing about Narnia or Lord of the Rings...both very religious in themes.
