Good News from ABC: American Liberals Leaving for Canada

Who says the MSM only report bad news? An online ABC News story reports that emigration from the US to Canada has increased dramatically . . . and that the departees are largely liberals. Hollywood stars never get around to making good on their threats to leave. But many everyday liberal folks are carrying through on their plans.
According to the article:
- The number of U.S. citizens who moved to Canada last year hit a 30-year high, with a 20 percent increase over the previous year and almost double the number who moved in 2000.
- The current increase is fueled largely by social and political reasons, says [Jack Jedwab of the Association for Canadian Studies.]
- "Those who are coming have the highest level of education these aren't people who can't get a job in the states," he explains. "They're coming because many of them don't like the politics, the Iraq War and the security situation in the U.S. By comparison, Canada is a tension-free place. People feel safer."
The article includes anecdotes of two Americans who have made the northward move:
- Tom Kertes, a 34-year-old labor organizer who moved from Seattle to Toronto in Aprilbecause of President Bush's opposition to gay marriage, and the tactics employed during the war on terror since 9/11. "My mother is thinking about it. My stepfather has diabetes and has health issues. So, [Say, I wonder if the US could attract more immigrants if we provided "free" healthcare?]
- Jo Davenport, who wrote "The Canadian Way," moved from Atlanta to Nova Scotia in December 2001. She also cites political reasons for her move, saying that she disagreed with the Bush administration's decisions after 9/11. "Things are totally different here because they care about their people here," she says, explaining that she's only been back home once or twice.
Good news, eh?

I would be all in favor of a new Federal entitlement program to pay for any/all American libs who wish to emigrate to another country. I think it’d be the best use of my tax $$$ I’ve ever heard of.

Also as good news: TWICE AS MANY CANADIANS come to the US (as US liberals go to Canada). These are entrepreneurs and freedom loving professionals.
WELCOME!

"My mother is thinking about it. My stepfather has diabetes and has health issues. So, [Say, I wonder if the US could attract more immigrants if we provided "free" healthcare?] I'm sure that the rank and file Canadian people appreciate the even greater burden on their already failing health care system.

Jo Davenport, who wrote "The Canadian Way," moved from Atlanta to Nova Scotia in December 2001. She also cites political reasons for her move, saying that she disagreed with the Bush administration's decisions after 9/11. "Things are totally different here because they care about their people here," she says, explaining that she's only been back home once or twice. Yeah, hmm, that was still when every liberal in America was calling for blood in retaliation still. But, in any event, I have to call fraud on someone, half way through September, going 'Gosh, I'd best move to Canada, because this is going to stink' and accomplish it by December. I'd pretty much guarantee that if you asked friends and family, they'd say that she had plans prior to 9/11, and further, probably didn't bother bringing up the political aspects until much, much later.

This is horsehockey.
5,000 more Americans came to Canada last year than previously.
I'm going to guess that 100,000 more oil and gas exploration jobs in Alberta had more to do with it than politics.
The Canadian dollar is at parity with the US dollar and Alberta exploration companies are offering top wages for experienced American workers.

Bingo! Parsing an ABC story is like reading Pravda or the Tally Ho (daily paper in "The Village"). ANYTHING in it can be a fabrication. The number of departures is probably correct because that is so easily checked. However, leaving for oil jobs doesn't make the right kind of story. The story cannot be falsified, as 100 people leaving for political reasons can constitute "many" for the MSM.
What is more telling is the fact that emigration TO the states STILL exceeds emigration from, despite the fact that we are TEN TIMES THE SIZE of Canada. And, as mentioned, the Canadian dollar is doing mighty well thanks to rising commodity prices.
BTW, another poster mentioned that Canadian entrepreneurs and professionals emigrate to the states, that is not completely true. Women who marry same ALSO come here!

Alberta exploration companies are offering top wages for experienced American workers. No kidding, they are paying bettr than New England union scale for some jobs. It's not that hard to pull in $100,000 running heavy equipment.
