Clinton says Cheney wrong on her request

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 15 minutes ago

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday accused Vice President Dick Cheney of falsely portraying her attempt to get Iraq planning information out of the Pentagon.

The Democratic presidential front-runner has been hammering at the Bush administration for two weeks since a top Pentagon aide refused to tell her whether or how the military was planning for the eventual withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.

In a letter to the vice president, she accused Cheney of offering "inaccuracies" in opposing her request.

She used even tougher language in an appeal sent to supporters of her presidential bid: "I couldn't care less what Dick Cheney says about me. But when he plays politics with the lives of our troops, you had better be sure I'm going to respond. And I know that you want to respond too."

The politically charged debate began in May when Clinton, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, sought a briefing on how the Pentagon is planning to eventually remove troops and equipment from Iraq.

Undersecretary for Policy Eric Edelman wrote to the New York senator last month that such discussion boosts "enemy propaganda." Clinton called that answer "outrageous" and accused the Pentagon of ducking a serious issue.

Now she's taking aim at Cheney, who said in an interview Tuesday with CNN that he agreed with Edelman's letter. Cheney said discussing specific troop movement plans with Congress could tip off the enemy.

"I thought it was a good letter," Cheney said.

Clinton fired back Wednesday in the letter to Cheney, saying she had never sought specifics of troop movements and was, in fact, getting a briefing from Edelman on the subject Thursday.

The simple answer from Bush should be, “As Commander-in-Chief, I am briefed on all contingencies. For Senator Clinton make a public issue of it suggests that Mr. Edelman is right - it plays into the enemies hands. Mrs. Clinton can rest assured these matters are part of alternative plans of military commanders in whom I place great trust.”

In other words, Hillary, STFU — Bush is in charge here, thank you.

Background....what Edelman said:

"Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia," Edelman wrote in the July 16 letter.

"Such talk understandably unnerves the very same Iraqi allies we are asking to assume enormous personal risks," he added.

He and Cheney are right...and throwing in Somalia was priceless.

Shrillery is scum, but what really annoyed me in the Cheney interview was how Larry King posed the question - I know Larry King graduated from the Liberal School for the Soft-Headed, but his question was grossly distorted: he asked why all ‘criticism’ from Democrats should be disallowed, which was not what the issue was about. That’s what the ‘RATs do all the time: you point out how they are actively trying to aid our enemies and they scream that ‘criticism’ must be allowed (of course, DUH) and that you are “questioning their patriotism”. The problem was not that Shrillery is raising ‘criticism’ but that she was trying to force the Pentagon to provide detailed plans on Iraq withdrawal, which of course would then be leaked and spun by libs as “imminent Iraq withdrawal” planned by Pentagon so that it would begin to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, undermining the mission, etc.

Shrillery knows exactly what she was/is trying to do, but for Larry King to swallow it whole..... so UNcritically..... shows again how servile the MSM is to the left.

Memo:

From: The Office of Vice President Richard Bruce Cheney
To: Mrs. Hillary Clinton, Senator from New York
Re: Invitation

Dear Hillary,

I note your recent objections and disagreements regarding Pentagon policies in the process of being developed for our troops in Iraq.

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I can appreciate your desire to learn more on this subject.

To that end, I am inviting you to a private briefing I have planned for Monday August 6th (coincidentally the 62nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima), contact my office to confirm your availability and we’ll get this all straightened out promptly.

Best Wishes,

Dick Cheney

PS - Ever been quail hunting?

I actually was on the thread where one poster called for her elimination...

I think a lot of people are frustrated by the pass the MSM gives clowns like Hillary, Obama, Reid...etc...simply cuz they’re Democrats.

The anger is starting to bubble over, which is why IMHO...if the sheeple of this country elect a Dem in 2008 a Societal Shooting War wont be far behind.

“I couldn’t care less

Shouldn't she have said, "I could care less?"

I think her statement is a double negative -- thereby meaning that she does, in fact, care what Cheney said.

Not the type of grammatical error one would expect from the smartest woman in the world and a published author.

Here's the letter of pandering...

The full text of Senator Clinton's letter follows: The Honorable Robert M. Gates
Secretary of Defense
The United States Department of Defense
The Pentagon
Suite 319
Washington, D.C. 20301

Dear Mr. Secretary:

Given the express will of the Congress to implement a phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq and the importance of proper contingency planning to achieve that goal, I write to request that you provide the appropriate oversight committees in Congress - including the Senate Armed Services Committee - with briefings on what current contingency plans exist for the future withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. Alternatively, if no such plans exist, please provide an explanation for the decision not to engage in such planning.

The seeds of many problems that continue to plague our troops and mission in Iraq were planted in the failure to adequately plan for the conflict and properly equip our men and women in uniform. Congress must be sure that we are prepared to withdraw our forces without any unnecessary danger.

At a Department of Defense operational update which you hosted earlier this month, you were asked whether contingency plans were being developed in the event that a future assessment concludes the surge is not working. In response, you noted that efforts at the Department of Defense included detailed planning and consideration of operational alternatives, but that "it's more of just broader conceptual thinking." General Pace reiterated that the Joint Chiefs of Staff had not received orders to prepare contingency plans.

Yesterday, however, it was reported that your Iraqi counterpart, Defense Minister Abdul-Qader al-Obeidi is preparing plans in the event that the United States and its forces departed Iraq quickly, reviewing worst-case scenarios, and conducting meetings with Iraq's political leadership on this issue.

In light of growing violence and insecurity in Iraq, the continued lack of political progress by Prime Minister al-Maliki, the Iraqi Defense Ministry's level of contingency planning, and the will of the American Congress to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq, it is imperative that the Department of Defense prepare plans for the phased redeployment of U.S. forces. As you well know, any military operation requires contingency planning so that the military and our troops are prepared if the current plan is unsuccessful. It would be irresponsible not to engage in similar planning in Iraq.

Thank you for looking into this matter. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely yours,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

CC: General Peter Pace, USMC
Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff

Shouldn't she have said, "I could care less?"

Hillary is correct, in this (one solitary) case. "I could care less" is lazy American slang that leaves out a syllable at the expense of completely inverting the meaning of the saying. Saying "I couldn't care less" means "I don't care" - saying "I could care less" means "I do care...because I could care less."
