Bomb explodes at Sears store in Mexico
Houston Chronicle/ AP ^ | Aug. 1, 2007 | JOSE MARIA ALVAREZ

OAXACA, Mexico — A small, homemade bomb exploded outside a Sears store in the troubled southern city of Oaxaca early Wednesday, damaging the entrance but causing no injuries, authorities reported.

A similar bomb was found and deactivated outside the entrance of a nearby bank, state Attorney General Evencio Martinez told national radio station W Radio.

"I believe it could be (the work of) local groups, given the type and style of device," Martinez said.

He denied the bombs were related to the People's Revolutionary Army, a small leftist group that bombed gas pipelines in July. Sears in Mexico is operated by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. In 2004, a faction of the rebel group placed small bombs outside banks and an office of Telmex, Slim's telephone company.

Television footage from the shopping mall, where the bomb exploded hours before businesses opened, showed glass scattered across a parking lot and damage to a steel security curtain and parts of the entrance.

Oaxaca's state government said in a news release that police were investigating.

Oaxaca has suffered more than a year of political unrest, and on Tuesday, Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan urged Mexican federal officials to investigate alleged police abuse against demonstrators.

Khan presented a report describing the unsolved killings of 18 people, arbitrary detentions and other abuses during last year's Oaxaca protests.

"The federal government cannot avoid its responsibility to guarantee the protection of human rights in the state of Oaxaca," Khan said.

The conflict began in May 2006 as a strike by teachers seeking higher pay and quickly grew into a broader movement known as the People's Assembly of Oaxaca, or APPO. It included Indian groups, students, farmers and leftists who claim Gov. Ulises Ruiz rigged his electoral victory and has repressed opponents.

Ruiz, who met with Khan on Tuesday, rejected the report.

"We told them that we believe those who wrote it are advisers for the APPO," Ruiz said after the meeting.

You've obviously not talked to the right people. Been in several bars, village squares, mountain towns, valley towns, DF, etc. Other than from a bookstore clerk and an old Tarascan Indian woman, never experienced anything worse than the occassional tongue-in-cheek remark.

Saw more anti-Americanism in Italy and in Venezuela.

Then again, I will admit that Mexicans don't exactly care for folks that are darker than them.

I’ve talked to the right people. Which is why I am acutely aware of the anti-American sentiments that runs though most every state.

Depends. What I've typically heard is, as is taught in Mexican schools, that 1/3rd of Mexico was stolen by the U.S. I always point out that it was Santa Ana's incompetance and brutality that cost them the territory. I can usually get agreement on what a scumbag Santa Ana is, but don't expect more.

There is also the perception among many that most Americans are racist against Mexicans.

There are several factors they contribute to the anti-Americanism I've experienced. From a cultural point of view, Mexico’s relationship with the United States has become strained to say the least. From the average Mexican's’s point of view, which isn’t always right or well informed, the American government mistreats and abuses migrants on a regular basis. Factor in the envy created by rich tourists swanking through poor Mexican cities and towns and it's no suprise they feel the way they do.

Athletic competition notwithstanding, this isn't the antics of a people who are enamored with the northern neighbors. It's more a unique insight into the underlying sentiments felt throught that land.

They don’t appreciate what they’ve got...Sears, Walmart, jobs, etc. Even Koolaid and Special K bars are made in Mexico. Check out the next food items you pick up and you might be surprised.

They’ve had over 500 years to make their country into a superpower, and look what they’ve got. talk about victicrats! And the Commies have a foothold there! America is only 231 years old!

I will admit that Mexicans don't exactly care for folks that are darker than them. I've seen that personally. If a Black buys something, the Mexican clerk will make them put the money on the counter.

My sister teaches school in New Mexico, and they don’t pull the “you stole our land” routine over there, because they know about the Gadsen Purchase, Louisiana Purchase, & Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago. It is only the Reconquistas that are “teaching” anyone that will listen that it was stolen. And those that are “learning” don’t question the validity.

Yeah, these people love us.

An overwhelming majority of Mexicans, 79 percent, believe Mexicans are discriminated against in the United States

A majority of Mexicans (52%) have an unfavorable view of Americans

Seventy percent of Americans said US wealth is due to work opportunities. Mexicans, by contrast, see US wealth as a result of the country exploiting others’ wealth—62 percent of Mexicans polled feel this way.

They could take out more Mexicans at the Sears store in North Hollywood.

You are so right! I’ve got a major kitchen renovation planned for the fall, and Sears will be a big part. I have used Home Depot before, but I called their “Customer Care” line yesterday to let them know I hoped they would continue to advertise in FNC. This was in regard to the attempted boycott by Kos and MoveOn.org and when I told the woman HD rep that I was a fan of FNC, she hung up on me. So, I sent an e-mail and told HD that we are now officially over.

Sears supports our troops and they’ve always been reliable.
Besides, I am sick unto death of walking 20 miles in a DIY store!!

Yet it's a poverty-stricken, filthy and corrupt as it's always been. Yep. They never learn. Years ago when I was in Tijuana helping build an elementary school, the potholes were almost big enough to put a VW Bug in. They didn't have clean water, out houses, most of the men were gone, the women still chain/rope the kids to something while they go off to work, because they can't figure out how to do child care. So sad. Good people. But something is missing.

Good luck with your kitchen renewal! I have been thinking of doing mine over, too, and will certainly call Sears in on that. Do they do hardwood floors and cabinets and granite counters, or only the appliances? If not, where are you having those things done? Sorry, but what is FNC?

Were you a liberal? j/k

I've been throught Mexico well beyond the border towns. And I've witnessed anti-Americanism in every corner. There were exceptions of course but they were not "Mexicans" per se. The Tarahumara Indians for example, expressed no animosities towards Americans that I could tell, they just wanted to sell their wares.

I was somewhat of a liberal. Not now though. However, the reason I got involved with that school is I heard there story and it was compelling enough to get involved. I didn't get anti-American sentiments at all, but I believe you. As for the Indians, they may seem to want to just sell their wares, but there are a number of Communist activists like Subcommander Marcos working in the communities down there.
