Aztec pyramid ruins found in Mexico City
Reuters ^ | 02 Aug 2007 | Reuters

Archaeologists have discovered what they think are ruins of an Aztec pyramid razed by vengeful Spanish conquerors in what is now one of Mexico City's most crime-ridden districts.

Construction workers unearthed ancient walls in the busy Iztapalapa neighbourhood in June, and government archaeologists said on Wednesday they believe they may be part of the main pyramid of the Aztec city, destroyed by conquistador Hernan Cortes in the 16th century.

Iztapalapa, now infamous for violent crime and drug dealing, has grown into a sprawling, poor district of the capital, obscuring the ruins.

"We knew the general location but couldn't explore because it's a big urban area," said government archaeologist Jesus Sanchez, who is director of the site.

Iztapalapa's ruler, Cuitlahuac, nearly annihilated Cortes and his Spanish troops in 1520 in what became known as the Sad Night. After eventual victory, Cortes destroyed the city.

Sanchez hopes he has found the city's main pyramid just below the neighbourhood's central plaza and garden. He and his team will spend more than a year investigating before deciding whether to excavate.

Mexico City is littered with pre-Hispanic ruins. In October, archeologists in the city's central Zocalo square unearthed a 15th century Aztec altar and a 12-ton stone idol just yards from choking downtown traffic.

The Aztecs, a warlike and deeply religious people who built monumental works, ruled an empire stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and encompassing much of modern-day central Mexico.

Is this one of the paramids’ the peaceful, loving Aztecs used when they cut the hearts out of live victims? Those mean old Spaniards made them stop!

Get those Spannish invaders out of Mexico (and out of the USA) Mexico belongs to the peaceful Aztecs who were an advanced society until evil European Spannards came along with diseased blankets....

Funny how that works...

Interesting choices of words: Spaniards are “vengeful” , i.e., ‘characterized by or showing a vindictive spirit’ , yet the Aztecs are merely “warlike”, although they routinely used the site to rip out the living hearts of their victims.

Deeply religious? They were pagan idolaters worshipping stone gods, like Muslims. a Cult, not religion.

This points up what I can't understand about the "La Raza" types.

They are so proud of their "hispanic heritage" and claim that we Americanos "stole" their land, yet seem to have no animosity toward the Spanish.

It already does in places. It's amazing how many Mexicans you can fit in a couple of refrigerator boxes taped together. Mexican side by sides.

Thanks BGHater. The "vengeful" Spanish ripped down the pyramid (as well as the Corncrib, a repository for the heads severed from human sacrifices) because they were appalled by the hideous murders conducted in the name of the Aztec religion. Shame on them for being so intolerant of diversity.

How ya gonna keep ‘em in Itzapalapa
After they’ve seen L.A. (A new version of a WWI song.)

Reuben, Reuben, I’ve been thinking
Said his wifey dear
Now that all is peaceful and calm
The boys will soon be back on the farm
Senor Reuben started winking and slowly rubbed his chin
He pulled his chair up close to mother
And he asked her with a grin

Chorus (sung twice after each verse):
How ya gonna keep ‘em down in Itzapalapa
After they’ve seen L.A
How ya gonna keep ‘em away from Broadway
Jazzin around and paintin’ the town
How ya gonna keep ‘em away from harm, that’s a mystery
They’ll never want to see a rake or plow
And who the deuce wants to pastor a cow?
How ya gonna keep ‘em down in Itzapalapa
After they’ve seen L.A.

Rueben, Rueben, you’re just loco
Said his wifey dear
Once a empleado, un buen empleado
There is nada you can fear
Mother Reuben, I’m not fakin
Tho you may think it strange
But wine and women play the mischief
With a boy who’s loose with change

Chorus (sung twice after each verse):
How ya gonna keep ‘em down in Itzapalapa
After they’ve seen L.A.
How ya gonna keep ‘em away from Broadway
Jazzin around and paintin’ the town
How ya gonna keep ‘em away from harm, that’s a mystery
Imagine Reuben when he meets his Pa
He’ll kiss his cheek and holler
Welcome to L.A.
How ya gonna keep ‘em down in Itzapalapa
After they’ve seen L.A.?

Obviously you have missed something important about the Aztecs. As described in this article, they were “deeply religious.” (sarc.) Their devotion to live human sacrifice attests to their spirituality, and may suggest the reason that neighboring tribes that had been repeatedly made victims of Aztec savagery allied themselves with Cortez in defeating the Aztecs.
I recommend reading “Columbus & Cortez, Conquerors for Christ,” by Prof. John Eidsmoe, a product of deep academic and literary research based heavily on Spanish documents and a book on the life of Cortez authored by his secretary.

Is it possible for the Aztecs to be “vengeful?” If they were ripping someone’s still beating heart out of their still living body with an obsidian knife, is that just “colorful local custom?”

Yeah, human sacrifice is "deeply religious". Who writes this horseshiite? I think the Conquistadors are just what's needed for a modern day cult also called "deeply religious".

During the final Spanish push into the city Aztec warriors displayed the flayed skins of captured Spaniards and called out to them, “Come over here and we’ll eat you too!”

Actually, what I was initially interested in was the provenance of the picture from OutNow

Yes, I've been to the beach lately (or at least to a semi-public swimming pool): that question strikes me as puzzling. But no matter.

GLBTQ means "Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transsexual Queer" (some say the Q stands for "Questioning" or "Genderqueer.") Hence my initial perplexity about the lady's picture.

I'm not trying to pull your chain. I'm just trying to figure out the relationship between Salma Hayek and OutNow; I do understand your point, I think, about Hayek as Aztec goddess Itzapapalotl.

CHRISTIAN, n. One who believes that the New Testament is a divinely inspired book admirably suited to the spiritual needs of his neighbor. One who follows the teachings of Christ in so far as they are not inconsistent with a life of sin.

RELIGION, n. A daughter of Hope and Fear, explaining to Ignorance the nature of the Unknowable.

The La Raza types hate the Spanish almost as much as the Americans. You just don't see it splashed on FR every other hour because no one on FR would care. I knew a lot of Mecha guys in college, and they would go off on Spaniards almost as often as "gringos".

Oh and they NEVER used the term Hispanic. Ever.
