Anybody know what standard minimum home time is?
The US can't just wipe out towns. We have signed the Fourth Geneva Convention in 1949. "The Fourth Geneva Convention relates to the protection of civilians during times of war "in the hands" of an enemy and under any occupation by a foreign power. "
Oh....puh-leeeeze
EVERYONE knows what “balls-to-the-wall” means.
:>)
Get out of the flesh there, brother. :>)
Think of the throttle with a ball on the end going up to the firewall on WWII aircraft.
All the way forward = maximum speed.
Cars....stick shift with ball on top, 5th gear, firewall....balls to the wall.
Hmm, you've just explained why we've never truly "won" a war since WWII...
Tell me, do you think the jihadis are also signatories? The Geneva Conventions were for governing warfare between the 'civilized' nations that could develop their own technology, clearly their authors did not contemplate Turd World religious freaks who would be able to terrorize the populations of advanced nations whose citizens have modern notions of morality, including respect for individuals.
We're not fighting the Russians here, this is not the United Kingdom vs. Argentina in the Falklands, this is an enemy whose religious fanaticism excludes any moral benefit from acting with compassion to those who are 'infidels'. Their 'holy' book tells them to lie to us, to kill us, to enslave and torture us, unless we submit to their travesty of a religion.
They do not deserve the protections of a document intended to benefit people who can be entrusted to empower morally responsible individuals to governmental power.
Bush can’t win. If he does something effective like this, they’ll be calling for his impeachment over “war crimes.”
We didn’t pacify post-WWII Germany by being nice. Germany did have snipers and others killing our occupation troops after the war. It ended real quick when we started shooting everyone even remotely close to those killing our troops.
All he can do is have the Democrats defund the war, and Republican Presidential candidates can blame the Rats for some of the carnage that is to follow. The very best thing that can happen to Republicans on Iraq is that neither side wants to talk about it during the general election (one of the very few reasons to hope that Hillary is their nominee), and with none of our top Republican Presidential candidates having voted for the Iraq invasion, they can absolve themselves of direct responsibility for it.
That's assuming we're in some kind of winding down phase, but if the "surge" is still going with war-weary troops, whose families will get all the MSM coverage they could hope for, Iraq will be the issue that Vietnam was in 1968. By 1972, Vietnam was not the election-altering issue that it was in '68, even though our young men were still being drafted and dying there. It did McGovern no good to be the peacenik candidate, and it won't do Barry O or John Edwards any good, either IF we're being seen to be pulling out.
The blame will come down to Bush, and since he refused to get ultratough with rebellious Iraqi villages early in the war, he deserves to have his share of responsibility. Our party's hopes of keeping the White House depend on it.
LOLOL!!!! Some of us didn't Mr. Gates. Some of us said, and knew, from the get go there would be problems. Some of us weren't listened to. Others of us were too interested in purple fingers.
Yeah, cut George some slack there. I can easily identify any mass-produced WWII combat aircraft by profile, and I didn't know that was the term's origin.
(Not all of us have served, X; some of us are just military-aficionado civvies)
I, too, am an afficionado. And it hacks me off when politician's mess with the military for domestic political reasons. That's what they're doing here. And even this is ignorant.
There is absolutely no good reason for our active troops to be deploying for 15 months at a time, and for our reserves to deploy 12 months at a time. The SpecOps have proven that one can maintain a presence at the highest level with a 3 month turn-around.
The short tour would preserve the force, the training, and the family time.
However, if we really knew some objective we could NAME, then we'd fully mobilize the nation and go win this thing.
It remains: "The Marines are a war; America's at the movies."
We tried the politically expedient war in Vietnam and it doesn't work in the long run.
The US is still bound by the treaty. Terrorists will do what they will do to try to force us out.
