The Legacy Of The Daily Kos
Townhall.com ^ | August 3, 2007 | John Hawkins

Posted on 08/03/2007 6:29:32 AM PDT by Kaslin

"I wouldn't want to be a senator or congressman. I'm able to influence politics much more effectively doing what I do. Now I can shape the national political debate. The only way I could exert more influence would be if I were president. But I'd never want that guy's job. Never." -- Markos Moulitsas Zuniga

Is Markos Moulitsas Zuniga AKA Kos really that powerful? No. But, does he have enormous sway on the Left? You bet he does.

His blog, the Daily Kos, is an enormous website that is slavishly catered to by Democratic Congressmen and senators. Among the prominent Democrats that have posted on his blog are Jimmy Carter, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi. Moreover, all three Democratic front runners for the presidency, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards, are scheduled to attend the Yearly Kos convention.

So, why is the influence and power that the Daily Kos wields in the Democratic Party so significant? Because many of the writers at the Daily Kos are extremists who promote a virulent hatred of the military, conspiracy theories, and in some cases, even violence and Fascist tactics against the people who disagree with them. That means when someone like Harry Reid writes a diary on the Daily Kos or when Hillary Clinton goes to the Yearly Kos convention, it indicates that they're comfortable associating with people who hold those sort of radical views.

Of course, you can expect Democrats to deny that the Daily Kos is a poison well of extremism, conspiracies, and anti-American sentiment. However, let's take a look at what some of the writers on that blog -- note that I said the writers, not just people leaving comments -- have had to say.

Most notoriously, the founder of the Daily Kos, Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, wrote this about American contractors who were murdered in Iraq and had their bodies desecrated,

"...I feel nothing over the death of merceneries. They aren't in Iraq because of orders, or because they are there trying to help the people make Iraq a better place. They are there to wage war for profit. Screw them."

When you see that sort of hostility towards people risking their lives in Iraq from the man running the Daily Kos, is it any surprise that other diarists on that blog have penned commentary like this,

"Our sons and daughters need to realize that choosing to be a soldier means a decision to place themselves among "the damned," since no matter what they end up doing while on the field of battle, they will eventually be damned.. damned if they do and damned if they do not. Realizing that compliance with a superior's order to shoot and kill the enemy may well lead to the damnation (the self-extirpation) of one's soul. On the other hand, noncompliance will lead to that of being court-martialed." -- Populist Party

"But do I still support the individual men and women who have given so much to serve their country? No. I think they’re a bunch of idiots. I also think they’re morally retarded. Because they sign a contract that says they will kill whoever you tell me to kill. And that is morally retarded." -- AWhitneyBrown

"We need to lose this war and not start the next one so that we can remain a free people. Diminished on the world stage? Perhaps, like Great Britain was diminished when it surrendered its colonial empire. But free." -- bluedogtxn

Only three examples have been listed here because the space available in this column is somewhat limited, but these sentiments are run-of-the-mill on the Daily Kos and similar comments are made on a regular basis by other writers on the website.

Along those same lines, here's the sort of bizarre paranoia that regular readers of the Daily Kos are exposed to on a regular basis,

"If we do not wake up now and flood Congress to impeach the President and Vice President, one year from now, Daily Kos may be banned and Markos himself may be disappeared, in a federal prison somewhere.

Even as I write these words I feel like a wild-eyed nutcase. If it were not for the OH SO REAL danger this country faces in the next 15 months or so as the people in power see their own doom and are determined to prevent their expulsion from power by suspending next year's elections and declaring martial law WHEN the next 9/11 comes or events that can be construed as a national emergency to "justify" such actions, I would be holding my tongue and crossing my fingers." -- slw0606

"...Bush let North Korea get nukes in order to start an arms race in Asia. He did it so American weapons manufacturers will make money, like we do with Israel.

We need to start talking straight, people. We need to start being up front about what this is all about. We can't wait until Bush walks up and blows our brains out to call this what it is." -- Kosmo

"Was Pat Tillman killed on Cheney's or Rumsfeld's orders?

We must be ever vigilantly cynical regarding the bloodthirsty, money-hungry cut-throats in the White House because they never disappoint the rudest and crudest analysis of their active and ongoing conspiracies. The vilest imaginings of Stephen King is where these deceitful serpents dwell. Never make the mistake that you are being too cold in your analysis of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, and Rice." -- 3CCD

Now let's move from conspiracy theories to hateful extremism,

"Because filing briefs don't stop bullets, and when the ballot box fails us, we are not above seeing what's in the ammo box." -- pinche tejano

"And anyone -- Liebercrat or Republican -- who stands to oppose impeachment, conviction and removal should be tried for their role as accomplice in the sedition and treason against the United States." -- GreyHawk

"If the Democrats fail (to end the war), the only option left is revolution and foreign intervention. Tyranny is but assured because Congress cannot and will not exercise it's Constitutional power to end this fascist Coup d'etat." -- wolverine 06

Now as you read these quotes from the diarists -- again, not the commenters -- at the Daily Kos, it should bring up a number of important questions that never seem to get answered.

* Do Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, etc., agree with the sort of sentiments expressed above and if not, why do they keep associating with the people that are saying these things?

* Moreover, if Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, etc., don't agree with the sort of sentiments expressed above, why don't they speak out about it instead of lending credibility to the people making those remarks by associating with them?

* If the most powerful people in the Democratic Party can get away with associating with the sort of people writing the quotes above, is there any group or person that's out of bounds for them?

* Perhaps most importantly – and, yes, this likely explains why the above questions will never be asked -- if the Daily Kos has become the most influential liberal blog in the world, when the sort of garbage you've seen above is an important part of the blog, what does it say about the state of mainstream liberalism?

Ten years ago, a liberal website that featured diarists who thought American soldiers were "morally retarded," that called for revolution, and that speculated that the President was going to declare martial law to retain power, would have been considered to be on the farthest fringes of the Left. But, today? Those sort of comments are as mainstream as it gets. That's the legacy of the Daily Kos and of the cowardly politicians in the Democratic Party who've helped to give that blog credibility.

Legacy of the Daily KOS...

Continued stock losses in the personal hygine and clothing sectors...

Lower inventories at the Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores...

Attention RNC:

You now have your sound bites for use in political ads against these Presidential Candidates who pander to the KKKOSsaks.

If nothing else, the “Screw them” comment by lowlife Zuniga should have made you recoil in horror. But it didn’t, which tells me everything I need to know about the three of you.

But of course, you support the troops, riiiiight???

"the legacy of the Daily Kos and of the cowardly politicians in the Democratic Party who've helped to give that blog credibility."

Absolutely true.

In a similar vein one can see the decline of black culture as the failure of the leaders of that community to stand up to the rapster ganster thugs that are literally destroying everything that was good in black culture.

Lost of Freepers emailed Bill about his story. He read those emails during last night’s show, and seemed to shed a better light on this Forum.

It doesnt appear O’Reilly thinks we’re anything like the children that post on Kos.

Dodd was clearly citing numbers given to him by someone. He didn’t have a clue last night.

IMO, he never saw the O’Reilly Factor and also never visited the DailyKos.

He just seemed woefully out of touch. And more than a tad pathetic defending the indefensible.

You know, not so long ago, the internet was predominantly used by those of a conservative bent. That is to say, being on the ‘net required not only some sort of PC or similar device and a dial up or, for the elite-est of the elite, a broadband (T1 anyone?) connection. Heck, we had a dial up at my place of work with 5 of us sharing the connection back in the mid-90’s. But this meant you had to own or have access to a PC and a connection.

Somewhere along the line, internet connectivity among the unwashed masses (this means you, unskilled, under-educated folks) and academia (which I suppose was among the earliest internet denizens) rose to a point where the left wing became an unavoidable presence.

Along came whack-job sites catering to these new users, the left, and, voila, you get sites like the DailyKos, which, I read as “the daily chaos” out loud when I see it.

I miss the gold, old days.

Thanks for posting this article.

I'm not so sure BOR's publicity of both websites is a "bad" thing for us. If the average inattentive American looks at the KOS website and compares it to ours, I believe most citizens will be appalled at KOS. I just don't think most Americans are as angry, vile, and hate-filled as the Kossacks are. When people read that site and compare it to FR, I think they will gravitate this direction - and learn about many different issues/subjects from a standpoint not reported in the MSM.

Whether they agree with us is yet to be determined. Getting opposing opinions is the beginning of thinking-for-oneself. Ultimately, that is a GOOD thing.

* Perhaps most importantly – and, yes, this likely explains why the above questions will never be asked -- if the Daily Kos has become the most influential liberal blog in the world, when the sort of garbage you've seen above is an important part of the blog, what does it say about the state of mainstream liberalism?

Most importantly, it says to me that the democrats are willing to do and say anything and support any group that they think can help them get into power or retain power. It doesn't matter how nutty or dangerous that group is. What matter to the democrats is the amount of influence, no matter how negative, that those blogs or groups have.

And, again, the end justifies the means, which puts this country in real danger of being ruled by the most radical of ideologies.

We can't just sit by and allow that kind of extremism to overtake and destroy the greatest country that ever existed. The democrats, especially the presidential candidates need to be held accountable for supporting any such group. But then again, the democratic party leaders are like-minded when it comes to those far-left blogs or groups. The democrats are not following those blogs or groups, they are leading and encouraging those groups. That's what Bill O'Reilly fails to understand and most of the rest of America. If we don't understand today's democratic party, then we might as well say "RIP America".

These products - cups, shirts, caps etc. - all serve to inflate his super ego. Don't forget he has written several books and promoted them on his show, and they have become best sellers...I've even bought some. All this, plus his radio show; when does the man have time to do his own research and learn facts? That's why he's so wrong about FR...he simply doesn't know what he's talking about. That's why he thinks we should have a paid monitor...everything's money with him. He needs to answer why he thinks paying a monitor will make him more diligent. It sure hasn't made politicians diligent, has it? Many of them are diligent in only looking out for themselves and leaving office more financially secure than when they were elected.IMHO

For me, the most interesting aspect of the KOS-ification of the Democrats is their tacit acceptance of political extremism in a time of war. The willingness of "serious" Democrat candidates for President to ally themselves with people who openly agitate for US military defeat and the overthrow of our government has occurred before: specifically in 1972. The result was a 49-state blowout of George McGovern by the hated Richard Nixon.

The Republicans have been handed a gift here, but require a candidate willing and able to make use of it, and that person has not yet emerged. As in '72, the news media will be of no help whatsoever to the Republican candidate; whoever the ultimate Democrat candidate will be, it will take a relentless campaign to reveal the sort of people with whom that person has associated, and the danger they pose to the safety and security of our nation. And it is all the more vital for Republicans to act, as the stakes are a wee bit higher today than they were 35 years ago.

It was disgusting when people on the Left openly rooted for the Viet Cong. How much more disgusting is it to watch them today rooting for al Qaeda?

Does anybody remember this mental midget from Saturday Night Live? He appeared on Weekend Update doing a lame commentary called The Big Picture back in the 80s.

Dear A.(we know what "A." stands for , don't we?),

If not for the military personnel that you impugn, your freedom to sneer at them would not exist. Gee, I wonder how your kind of middle school insults would have gone over with the Third Reich? Or the the Politburo? Because of those who are willing to give all for their country, even unfunny, mewling saps like you retain the freedom to speak your mind.

And let's face it... if the likes of you were actually in control, those of us who disagree with you would lose that right in a heartbeat. You would label it "hate speech" and destroy those who believe in actual free speech. You're all the same on the Left: self-righteous hypocrites who whine about your rights while doing everything in your power to deny them to others.

Thank God (would reference to God remain legal if you had control, A.?), soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines don't agree with you and are willing to lay down their lives even for pasty simps like you who hold them in contempt, but couldn't carry their jockstraps on the best day of their lives.

I predict the day will come when you will cry for the military to save your sorry a$$ from those who would attack our nation. I hope those brave souls still exist at that time and have not been so discouraged by your smirking hatred that they haven't just walked away.

In fairness to the site (like how the media attacks FR unjustly), there are plenty of contrary replies to that video by liberals at Kos to A. Whitney Brown's commentaries. You can allow people to post things at your site for the reason that you also allow people to call those people out for what they wrote and you can feel that you are being fair and you'd be correct. Brown isn't saying things like Bush should be assassinated or whatever.

Yes, Daily Kos is far more powerful than MoveOn.org could ever dream of being.
MoveOn.org is nothing but a little pissant compared to Daily Kos.

Does anybody remember this mental midget from Saturday Night Live? He appeared on Weekend Update doing a lame commentary called The Big Picture back in the 80s.

Yes! Thank you for the reminder. I knew the name sounded familiar. He was not funny at all.

Lots of Freepers emailed Bill about his story. He read those emails during last night’s show, and seemed to shed a better light on this Forum. It doesn’t appear O’Reilly thinks we’re anything like the children that post on Kos.

Can you paraphrase some of those letters for those of us who already bailed on O’Reilly?

The subscribers and posters there (kos) are 60' Radical wannabe's....

Basically, just against EVERYTHING (anti-establishment, anti-Constitution as intended, and anti-rules).

As far as their founder's views:

"My heroes are Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, Cesar Chavez"....(quote from Markos Moulitsas Zúniga)

Anything to make money, and enough nutcases in this world to think they have the Utopian Socilaist answer via their ignorance of reality and responsiblity to keep him in a capitalist endeavor while espousing socialism.

'Nuff said.

I watched last night for the express purpose of seeing if O'Reilly recanted at all about FR. He read pithy snippets from 3 pro-FR letters. The one I remember most was along these lines:

"I did a search for the F-word on both Daily Kos and Free Republic. Results: Daily Kos, over 7,000 hits. Free Republic, zero."
