John Edwards Says Don't Take Murdoch Money -- But He Took 800 Grand?

In Friday's Washington Post, Howard Kurtz reports that the new John Edwards campaign against any Democrat accepting Rupert Murdoch contributions has a slight flaw:

"John Edwards will never ask Rupert Murdoch for money -- he won't accept his money," said a statement e-mailed to supporters. Not so fast, Murdoch's people say. His publishing unit, HarperCollins, paid Edwards a $500,000 advance -- and $300,000 in expenses -- for his 2006 book "Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives."

"We assume the senator is going to give back the money from his advance," News Corp. spokesman Brian Lewis said.

Read in another version of this story that he gave it to charity. Conveniently, no records could be produced for this. Still, for him to come out and tell all the Dem candidates to return money from NewsCorp when he KNOWS he got money from NewsCorp is very telling.

Damn right. Right there are your "two Americas": Forrest Gump's America that he lives in with just his dopey tangerine-wife and Everybody America, who should get down on their knees and thank God that we're all just so blessed to share a planet with such a brilliant, brilliant...ahem..."man".

Because he is a capitalist (a good thing) and knew there would be enough idiots out there that would plop down their hardly earned dollars for Edward’s drivel.

Side benefit, well, this story. Now Edwards looks like a moron...

Again...

Republican politicians can’t stand it when they learn that good Democrats like Senator Edwards and MurryMom earn their money honestly, unlike Jack Abramoff and other politically juiced donors to the Republican Party.

Obama won’t use nukes, Edwards is being a moron, Hillary is Hillary and reminds men of their ex-wives, Romney reminds me of one of the claymation “Thunderbirds” I used to watch as a kid, etc etc. “None of the above” is looking better every day

Oh, I get it, Murry Mom. Republicans earn their money dishonestly.

Actually, you entirely missed the point. It’s the hypocrisy of Edwards being discussed here, not his profits on his side of the Two Americas.

Thanks, now every time I see him I’ll be looking for his lips to move out of sync with his words

Fitting since his words are often out of sync with his positions...

Personally I’m confused as to the outrage here. I don’t like it when the left misconstrues facts nor do I like it when it’s done on our side. It appears to be a simple straight forward business deal with a Murdoch company. That can in no way be construed as taking money from Murdoch. This is overblown big time.

It depends. A large advance to a politician can be one way to launder a bribe. It depends on whether you expect to earn it back. No way to know for sure, but I doubt whether the Edwards book was that profitable.

They wouldn’t give that kind of advance to any ordinary author, unless he had a best-seller track record or a lot more worshipful fans than Edward probably has.

Murdoch’s probably just covering himself, in the unlikely case the Edwards gets into power. There was at least some chance that he and Kerry might have won the election, and in that case he needs friends in the White House.

He is giving a lot more money than that to hillary, because she is the likeliest nominee, and if she gets into the Whitehouse she would make a powerful and vindicive enemy. Safer to buy her support.

You could be right of course however book deals are easily analyzed and very open. I’m consistently amazed at the size of some of the book bonuses to celebrities across the board so this does not appear out of the ordinary. Additionally the publishing company is a bit down the food chain from Murdoch and it’d be amazed if he was personally involved in a decision at this level. He may have been aware of it but again it would be out of the ordinary for a man running an organization of this size to be involved in a routing decision so far removed from him...there must be five or six to as many as a dozen or more people in the chain of command between this bonus decision and Murdoch.

"Republican politicians can’t stand it when they learn that good Democrats like Senator Edwards and MurryMom earn their money honestly...."

LOL, you fool, the scum-sucking Edwards earned most of his fortune as a vicious lying torts lawyer concocting fraudulent cases undermining the practice of medicine in this country. Now it turns out he can't even find an intelligent way to be a demagogue on media issues, since he gladly took Murdoch money when it suited his interests. I'm sure we'd love to know what 'honest' living you've made, since your posts reveal someone who is pathologically dishonest and incapable of discussing the most basic facts. Let me guess.... are you a PR whore for some branch of the Demagogic Party?
