ROSEN: This isn't a free speech issue ( Ward Churchill )
Rocky Mountain News ^ | August 3, 2007 | Mike Rosen

Posted on 08/03/2007 9:49:17 AM PDT by george76

"Subject: You are f**king nazi's (sic)

"It is IMPOSSIBLE to speak politely, intelligibly, with reason to moral cretins masquarding (sic) as humans, cretins utterly devoid of intelligence, humanity, common sense, courage: YOU ARE ALL F**KING NAZI'S (sic). May you and all your progeny burn in hell for eternity. Perhaps there is a special place there for nazi's (sic)."

The above e-mail was sent to all nine of the CU regents July 25, the day after their decision to fire Ward Churchill. The sender was one Paulette Sage, a doctoral candidate in sociology at Case Western Reserve University. Sage's spelling deficiencies and her ignorance of the difference between the plural and possessive is embarrassing enough, but her equating the CU regents with Nazis is positively idiotic.

Sadly, Sage typifies hysterical academic leftists distraught at Churchill's demise and appalled that one of their own tenured philosopher-kings could be held accountable for his behavior by administrators, taxpayers, tuition-paying customers, the community or even a panel of fellow academics.

Where were these dogmatic free-speech defenders when Lawrence Summers was driven from the presidency of Harvard University for simply speculating, at an academic round-table, that fewer women than men might be interested in academic math and science careers? Apparently, only left-wing speech enjoys absolute protection. What hypocrites!

The party line of Churchill apologists is that he was really fired for expressing his beliefs and that the findings of CU faculty panels that investigated his serial academic fraud were merely a ruse. Nonsense. Churchill is a proven liar and cheat.

Oh, dear God...every time I suspect I'm being too hard on sociology matriculants someone like this illiterate brat turns up. This individual has, by virtue of her chosen field of study, arrogated to herself the right to judge other people's behavior and regulate them en masse through social policies she only dimly understands but does not hesitate to parrot.

There are, of course, highly intelligent sociologists with pride in their profession who do not claim that it confers an instant expertise in human behavior. Most of them are dead.

“Sadly, Sage typifies hysterical academic leftists...”

Calling her an academic because she attends the school is akin to calling a bat a Christian because he hangs upside down in a church belltower.

Thanks for the (maybe) e-mail address. I sent the following e-mail. If there is any response, I'll put it on this thread.

Are you the Miss Sage who wrote the illiterate, misspelled, grossly inappropriate letter to all nine CU Regents after eight of them voted to fire Ward Churchill for plagiarism? If so, I would like to think that your PhD program would boot you out on your butt for having the social ignorance even think such garbage, much less to send such a letter.

I believe that my PhD program would have booted me out for anything so stupid. But then, your field is sociology.

Ne-VER-mind.

Have a nice day.

You can read Ms. Sage's entry in the Case Western Reserve Sociology Department graduate student directory here.

She doesn't list sending abusive email as one of her “Personal Interests/Achievements”. Maybe it's time she updated her entry.

My son received 4 year degrees in Economics and in Spanish from a college that does not teach any sociology classes. There, it is viewed as “a false science”. He seems to be doing just fine.

Ms. Sage has clearly employed the most powerful weapon from those who are interested in meaningful change and dialogue; hurling trite insults. Remember, the best way to change someone’s mind and advocate your position is to spew vitriol.

As Fein describes the ruling, "The court of appeals reasoned that the jury correctly found that CUNY reasonably believed that Jeffries' calumny about Jews would disrupt faculty relations, stigmatize the university, or dissuade benefactors from contributing. Accordingly, the professor's academic demotion was untroubling to the First Amendment."

A bad ruling. The Framers clearly intended to protect speech that disrupts, stigmatizes and dissuades.

The conclusion one must draw from such examples isn’t that every institution has its bad apples but rather that, at least in the liberal arts in America, moral turpitude and political hucksterism pervades higher education.

Radical criminals with questionable academic credentials flourish in a milieu that bristles with hostility toward real scholars who don’t toe the party line—witness the case of former Harvard President Lawrence Summers.

Individuals with prison records or FBI rap sheets don’t get into major educational institutions because they fudge their resumes.

They get in because they share the political dogmas of those who hire them—and they flourish for the same reason.

SWEET Ann Coulter takes another look at the Ward Churchill controversy:

Tenure was supposed to create an atmosphere of open debate and inquiry, but instead has created havens for talentless cowards who want to be insulated from life. Rather than fostering a climate of open inquiry, college campuses have become fascist colonies of anti-American hate speech, hypersensitivity, speech codes, banned words and prohibited scientific inquiry.

Even leftists don’t try to defend Churchill on grounds that he is Galileo pursuing an abstract search for the truth. They simply invoke “free speech,” like a deus ex machina to end all discussion. Like the words “diverse” and “tolerance,” “free speech” means nothing but: “Shut up, we win.”

(It’s OK. I know you thought anyone would get the implied sarcasm. My answer is for those who don’t, so they can see how racist and unforgiving conservatives are.)
