Official: About 100 Taliban militants killed in air strike(5 SENIOR Leaders killed)

KABUL, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- About 100 Taliban rebels including five senior commanders were killed during an air strike in southern Afghanistan, Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi told reporters Saturday.

Foreign troops carried out an air strike in remote Baghran district of Helmand province on Thursday when many Taliban militants were gathering to watch the execution of several persons accused of cooperating with the government, Azimi said.

About 100 insurgents were killed in the bombardment, he said, adding five senior Taliban commanders including Mullah Rahim, top Taliban commander in Helmand, were among the killed.

Azimi said Mansor Dadullah, top Taliban military commander, was found at the site before the bombing, and Afghan troops were still confirming whether he was killed.

Referring to the incident, the U.S.-led coalition forces said, "During a sizable meeting of senior Taliban commanders, coalition forces employed precision guided munitions on their location after ensuring there were no innocent Afghans in the surrounding area.

Some media reports quoted locals as saying that 200 to 300 persons were killed or injured in the air strike and many were civilians.

The spokesman Azimi refuted this claim, saying only around 150 persons were staying there before the air strike as a reconnaissance plane had detected and at most 10 civilians were there.

He also said foreign troops used "small bombs" in the air raid in order to reduce civilian casualties.

Due to rising Taliban violence, over 3,800 persons have been killed in Afghanistan this year

The meeting site was being watched for at least 24 hours before the strike. They knew who they were aiming at....and I will bet they got him.

Guess the Taliban doesn’t have to worry about funding their executive pension plan. Becoming a Taliban “leader” is a ticket to an early death.

Looks like someone else who was “cooperating with the government” turned the tables on them.

If I was going to be executed by the Taliban, I’d love to see those JDAMs raining down. (For about one microsecond, but what the heck.)

Excellent!

You have no chance to survive... make your time.

I'm wondering, in a gathering like that, do you hit them with a High Explosive or opt for bombletts or something like a FAE ?

Well, if FAE produces “Crispy Kooky”s , use that. Perhaps not even 72 virgins will accept that. Even Helen Thomas wouldn’t.

Keeps looking (even) better.

But the enemy casualty is very high," he [Azimi] told a press conference in the capital, Kabul. "There might be more than 100 killed."

5 Senior Leaders killed? With all the reports lately of Senior Leaders being killed you wonder who's left?

Seems that they got more seniors than a bingo convention.

Using civilians as human shields isn’t a tenet of Islam as it is interpreted by every Muslim, just by the ones who are taking violent jihadist actions. We have allies in Iraq. They are Muslim. They aren’t fighting us, they’re fighting with us, much less are they using civilians as human shields. Wow this gets old, having to repeat this so many times.

This is great news. However we need to get over worrying about how many civilian casualties are created when we go after someone. If only one bad guy buys the farm it doesn't matter how many civilians get whacked at the same time.

We will never win if the attitude doesn't shift.

Few civilian deaths from Afghan bombing - officials

"It is interesting there were no females," said British Lieutenant-Colonel Charlie Mayo, suggesting the wounded adult males may have been Taliban fighters. "We are very confident we hit a large meeting of Taliban and they are very sore about it."

Using civilians as shields IS a tenet of Islam, covered by several sura'a and hadith as they are interpreted by every Muslim, and by the ones who are taking violent jihadist actions.
It's just some choose not to follow those tenets of the Koran and hadith, they are what is known as hypocrites according to Moe, not "good" muslims like the Jihadists. As such they become useful "shields" to the "purists", because they are hypocrites- expendable anyways. A "good" muslim could also be a shield because a "good" muslim is willing to give his life for Allah's cause.

Noble Qur'an:2:190 Footnote: "Jihad [and every gruesome act condoned while fulfilling this duty],i> is holy fighting in Allah's Cause with full force of numbers and weaponry. It is given the utmost importance in Islam and is one of its pillars... He who tries to escape from this duty, or does not fulfill this duty, dies as a hypocrite."

Yes it does get old correcting Islamic apologists.

I remember awhile back there was a report that some lawyers in the Defense Dept. had called off a strike on a similar-type gathering because it might violate international law. I don’t know whether the story was true or not, but if true the people who stopped that strike are thankfully no longer in a position to have stopped this strike

Makes no difference. Civilians Shmivilians. This is out in Indian Country and anyone there was aiding and abetting.

Azimi said Mansor Dadullah, top Taliban military commander, was found at the site before the bombing, and Afghan troops were still confirming whether he was killed.

I'd call this a successful test run of the MQ-9 Reaper, which just recently arrived in Afghanistan..

"The Reaper's first combat deployment is expected in Afghanistan, and senior Air Force officers estimate it will land in Iraq sometime between this fall and next spring. They look forward to it."

There are no civilians in taliban controlled sectors; because they give sustenance to the enemy. This nonsensical thinking of not wading through the enemy with massive and lavish firepower cause we might kill a civilian is what gets our far more of our troops killed.
